Island rowing crews win at Lymington and Coalporters regattas
Isle of Wight rowing crews impressed on the water at two mainland regattas this month (July). Sandown Shanklin Rowing Club, Ryde Rowing Club and Newport Rowing Club took crews to the mainland, with the Lymington and Coalporters Regattas hotly contested. At Lymington, Sandown Shanklin's J14 Quad of Olivia Mumberson, Alex Collier, Josh Batchelor, Digby Ridgwell and Paul Gamble (cox) won their race, as well as Esme Walters, who won the Novice Single Sculls and the Junior Ladies Pair with Anna Scott. Novice men of Huseyin Yolcu, Sam Meadowcroft, Isaac King, Fin Diffey and Esme Walters (cox) also won their race. Newport Rowing Club's Women's Novice crew of Grace Garner, Helen Hopper, Hannah Tuberville, Julia Coulson and Fiona Brooks (cox) came second, narrowly beaten by Lymington, while the Open Novice crew of Freddie Hollis, Max Gasper, Jude Williams, River Szawie and Fiona Brookes (cox) narrowly lost to Sandown Shanklin Rowing Club. Second place finishes were also clinched by Sandown Shanklin's Girls J16 Quad of Annabelle Steward, Lottie Pettitt. Evie Selway, Rose Collier and Arlo Adds (cox) and Boys Quad of James Travers, Sam Meadowcroft, Isaac King and Fin Diffey narrowly lost to Poole. Last weekend at Coalporters Regatta, Ryde Rowing Club's Coastal Junior Four of Emily Kellerman, Abi Locke, Alexis Owen, Eva Gordon and Ruby Read (cox) won their final, while the Open Junior Senior Fours of Will Hall, Paddy Kearney, Charlie Watts, Isaac Gibson and Mai Read (cox) finished second. Newport Rowing Club's Junior crew of Boris Hare, Connor Garner, Nathaniel Hamilton, Eric Williams and Mariana Hare (cox) won their race by two lengths, while the Open Novice crew of Freddie Hollis, Max Gasper, Jude Williams, Riv Szawiel and Fiona Brookes (cox) finished second for the third regatta in a row. The club's Masters 50 crew of Paul Gamble (Shanklin), Chris Clarke, Julie Clarke, and Harry Hare (cox) finished in second place.

Successful day for Island clubs at Poole Regatta
Rowers from Shanklin and Sandown, Newport and Ryde clubs competed at the Poole Regatta on May 17. Newport Rowing Club sent six crews to the event, which took place in perfect rowing weather. The day began with the under-14 rowers Mariana Hare and Fiona Brookes joining forces with Shanklin's Olivia Mumberson and Martha Egerton, coxed by Esme Walters, to race in the under-14 quad. Despite only having one practice session before the race, they won by a clear margin. They made a strong start in the final, turning third at the buoy, but faded in the last 600m to finish sixth. The open novice crew of Freddie Hollis, Riv Szawiel, Max Gasper, and Eric Williams, also coxed by Fiona, reached their final but finished sixth. Wightlink-sponsored Ryde Rowing Club also competed at the Poole Regatta and had a reasonably successful day. The women's coastal four of Eva Gordon, Alexis Owen, Emily Kellerman, and Fiona Owen, coxed by Ruby Reed, won the final, claiming their second Hants & Dorset Championship point of the season. The J16 boys coxed quad of Joe Bird, Charlie Watts, Cameron D'Arcy, Max Locke, and Harry Watts also won their race. Shanklin Sandown's junior crews enjoyed a successful regatta with five wins and two third-place finishes. The boys' J14 quad of Alex Collier, Connie Batley-Smith, Josh Batchelor, Digby Ridgewell, and Paul Gamble (cox) secured a comfortable victory, as did their female counterparts of Mariana, Fiona, Martha Eggleton, and Olivia, with Esme coxing. The novice ladies four of Anna Visser, Chloe Walker, Theodora Travers, Ruth Faithfull and Jane Denby-Roach narrowly missed out on a place in the final, finishing fourth in their heat, while the masters ladies came fifth in their race
