Nominations open for News & Star's 'Best Pub 2025' award

NOMINATIONS are now open for the 'Best Pub 2025' award. In a bid to celebrate pubs in North and West Cumbria, the News & Star has launched its new competition which will crown the area's 'Best Pub 2025'. Whether it's the perfect pint, unbeatable atmosphere or legendary Sunday roast, we want to hear from you. As part of the competition, News & Star readers can now nominate their go-to drinking spots from North and West Cumbria via an online voting platform. NOMINATE YOUR FAVOURITE PUB HERE. Online nominations will run until Sunday, July 13, with the ten finalists being revealed on Monday, July 14. Readers will then be able to vote for the county's 'Best Pub 2025' by picking up editions of the News & Star between Monday, July 21, and Saturday, August 2. The ultimate local legend is set to be announced on Monday, August 11. Joy Yates, regional editor for Newsquest Cumbria, asked readers to support their favourite. Joy said: 'Pubs are hubs of activity. We love a visit for many reasons, to relax or meet friends and family, for lovely food or just a quick drink after work. Most of us have a favourite local or a pub we go to for entertainment. 'We are now asking our readers to tell us about their favourite bar and nominate them for an opportunity of recognition in our Best Pub promotion. Carlisle barbershop makes 'Best Barber 2025' shortlist

WE'RE highlighting the shortlisted barber shops in our competition in the . Each of the establishments will be featured over ten issues. Duke Hare has been nominated by News & Star readers as one of ten finalists in its 'Best Barber Shop 2025' award. The shop is located on Carlisle's Scotland Road in Stanwix. It is owned by Sarah McKibbin who opened the Duke Hare in 2016. Speaking to the News & Star last year, she said: "I was the first barbershop in Stanwix, for example and didn't really know this area, so it was a big risk that I could get it all completely wrong. 'I personally moved to this end of as a result of the community being so friendly and welcoming to us when I opened Duke Hare over 8 years ago. "From the other businesses nearby to the locals, our clients come from all over, but a lot also live or work in this area, too. "Clients and locals aside, it's opened us up to getting to know so many other people within this industry too, especially locally.' They have four fully qualified, full-time barbers available for appointments via their online booking system. They have a five-star rating online, and one of their most recent reviews reads: '[I] came here for the first time. [It was the] only place I could find that caters to beard care. 'The staff were amazing! They listened to exactly what I wanted, suggested other things and did an amazing job on my hair and beard…definitely going to come here from now on!' Carlisle Market Hall barbers reaches final of 'Best Barber 2025'

WE'RE highlighting the shortlisted barber shops in our competition in the . Each of the establishments will be featured over ten issues. Brunos Barbers has been nominated by News & Star readers as one of ten finalists in its 'Best Barber Shop 2025' award. The shop was opened by Bruno Guedes 10 years ago, after he moved to Carlisle from Portugal. Brunos is located at in the Market Hall in Carlisle city centre and has a regular set of clients as well as passing trade. Bruno said it was 'very flattering' to be nominated and reach the final. He said: 'I've been here for ten years now and to be nominated by the people is very flattering. It's just me in the shop and it's small but I have regular clients. 'It's a unique space with good music. I take walk ins and bookings and most of the time people don't mind waiting. I'm always busy so it keeps me occupied!' Inside Brunos Barbers in the Market Hall. (Image: Supplied) Bruno explained how his favourite part about owning his barber shop is getting to know his customers. I've become friends and even family with some of my customers. It's my passion, I love it. 'I love connecting with people, hearing about their life experiences and relating with each other. I moved to the city from Portugal and now I've got a big circle of friends – they make it a better place.' Bruno also prides himself on being one of the fastest barbers in business. (Image: Supplied) He said: 'I'm very quick, one of the quickest. I can cut around 40 to 50 people per day and on Saturdays, I've been known to cut 80. 'Fridays and Saturdays are my busiest. I work five days a week, Sunday and Monday are my rest days.' Schoolchildren share special messages for Father's Day supplement in the News & Star

Schoolchildren from across the region have shared special messages to celebrate Father's Day. Pupils from 12 local schools sent messages for their fathers and father-figures which will be be published by the News & Star in a Father's Day supplement on Wednesday June 11. The supplement is part of a call out for messages across the north of England which saw 90 schools taking part, sharing 14,000 messages. It will feature messages from pupils of Our Lady and St Patrick's Catholic Primary School, Ewanrigg Junior School, Beckstone Primary School, Orgill Primary School, St Bridget's Catholic Primary School, Longtown Primary School, Wreay CofE Primary School, Crosby-on-Eden CofE School, Lowca Community School, Moor Row Community Primary School, Shankhill CofE Primary School and Stainton CofE Primary School Families of the schools involved in the initiative will have the opportunity to order copies in advance to be delivered to them. The News & Star is just one of 11 titles across the north of England celebrating Father's Day with dedications from school children including The Mail, The Northern Echo and the Lancashire Telegraph. THE ten finalists in the News & Star's 'Best Chippy 2025' award have been revealed. These finalists have been chosen by News & Star readers after a week of online nominations, which started on Monday, May 19, and concluded on Saturday, May 30. The ten finalists who will all be in the running to be crowned News & Star 'Best Chippy Bar 2025' are: Caddy's Fish and Chips, Newtown Road, Carlisle Central Chippy, Central Avenue, Carlisle CJ's Chip Shop, High Street, Wigton Cross Quays Chip Shop, King Street, Maryport Dante's Fish and Chips, Shady Grove Road, Carlisle Fontanas, London Road, Carlisle Morton Fryer, Stonegarth, Carlisle Paolo's Fish and Chips, Denton Street, Carlisle Superfish, Workington, Carlisle The Dalston Fryer, Dalston, Carlisle News & Star readers will now be able to vote for their favourite finalist by picking up a copy of the daily newspaper between Monday, June 2, and Sunday, June 14. In addition, we will be highlighting the shortlisted chip shop in our competition in the News & Star. Each of the establishments will be featured over ten issues. After this final voting stage has concluded, the winner will be crowned as the News & Star's 'Best Chippy 2025' during the week commencing Monday, June 23.
