Last chance to nominate Cumbria's 'Best Barber 2025'
IT'S your last chance to nominate your go-to shop for the 's 'Best Barber 2025' award. Online nominations for the award will close at midnight on Sunday, June 15 and ahead of this deadline, Cumbrians are urged to get behind their favourite. Following this stage of online nominations, News & Star readers will then be able to vote for their 'Best Barber 2025' by picking up editions of the News & Star between Monday, June 23, and Saturday, July 5. The ultimate champion of the chair is set to be announced on Monday, July 14. Nominate your favourite barber from North and West Cumbria HERE The competition aims to celebrate the local barbers in North and West Cumbria. After its launch, Joy Yates, regional editor for Newsquest Cumbria asked readers to support their favourite. She said: 'There are many, many barber shops that deserve a shout-out. As well as the usual grooming services, trimming, shaping and shaving beards, some also may offer scalp massages and head shaving. PEOPLE are urged to nominate their favourite place for a chippy tea in the News & Star's 'Best Chippy 2025' awards. Online nominations will close on Sunday, May 25 with the ten finalists being revealed on Tuesday, May 27. Cumbrians are being asked to get behind their favourite. It could be newcomers to the scene or shops that have been serving up tasty golden fish and fluffy chips for decades. Following this, readers will then be able to vote for the county's 'Best Chippy 2025' by picking up editions of the News & Star between Monday, June 2, and Saturday, June 14 with the winner set to be announced on Monday, June 23. Speaking after its launch, Joy Yates, regional editor for Newsquest Cumbria asked readers to support their favourite. Three NHS workers are finalists in Pride of Cumbria Awards
THREE NHS staff have been nominated for the Pride of Cumbria Awards. Sylvie Booth, Valerie Coltart, and Laura Street are finalists in the NHS Worker of the Year category in the awards organised by Newsquest Cumbria. Sylvie is an orthoptist, Laura works as lead for Cancer Services Improvement, and Valerie is a paediatric dietician at the Cumberland Infirmary. Sylvie was nominated by her colleague, Naomi Corbin. Naomi said: "Sylvie goes above and beyond under very challenging working conditions. Her work in low vision and stroke is vital to individuals in maintaining their independence, rehabilitation, and emotional well-being. 'She is a key team player, working with our RNIB ECLO, ophthalmologists, local sight support charities, and in collaboration with other allied health professionals. "Sylvie juggles motherhood with long working days, clinical teaching, and the needs of her wider family. 'The gift of sight through the services Sylvie provides gives those with sight impairment or changes in sight following events like stroke, life-changing experiences in terms of individual safety, sense of self-worth, ability to access rehab, returning to work, and living a quality and meaningful life. Sylvie very much deserves to be recognised for this.' Valerie was nominated by a patient's mum. She said: 'I am very humbled by this unexpected nomination as I do not feel worthy of any special recognition outside of my own lovely team.' Laura was nominated for her passion and dedication to improving cancer services for the local population. The citation said: 'Laura is unwavering dedicated to ensuring that patients receive the most timely and supportive care possible, and she is an asset to both the organisation and the communities that we serve.' The awards will take place on Wednesday, June 18, at the Greenhill Hotel, Wigton, with finalists invited to a night of celebration.
