Care for All opens in Milwaukee, becoming Wisconsin's fifth abortion clinic
Care for All Community Clinic, Wisconsin's fifth and Milwaukee's third abortion clinic, will begin seeing patients on Tuesday, June 10. The clinic, located at 756 N. 35th St. on the city's near west side, initially will offer abortion care up to 14 weeks, including medication abortions up to 11 weeks and six days. The independent, nonprofit clinic will be offering abortion care up to the state limit of 21 weeks and six days within three months. Additional services will include miscarriage management, birth control prescriptions, and IUD and Nexplanon insertions, as well as access to pregnancy continuation and family care services. Future services will include gender-affirming care, cancer screenings, sexually transmitted infection testing, and more. Affiliated Medical Services, an independent clinic, also is located in Milwaukee. Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has 21 clinics in the state, three providing abortions. These clinics are in Dane and Milwaukee counties. The clinic in Sheboygan County only provides medication abortions administered through two pills. Funding for the clinic has come from local and national foundations and abortion funds, individual giving, and service fees, according to Ali Kliegman, the clinic's co-founder and executive director. "We are inspired by the outpouring of support Care for All has already received as we prepare to serve Milwaukee and Wisconsin,' Kliegman said. 'Public support for abortion access remains consistently high throughout our nation. Wisconsin residents deserve easy and timely access to abortion and other sexual and reproductive health care services.' Wisconsin residents have consistently supported abortion being legal in all or most cases, according to polls conducted by Marquette Law School since 2012, but news of the clinic's opening is prompting reaction from anti-abortion organizations. "We are greatly saddened to announce that Care for All, an abortion center, has now opened its doors in Milwaukee," Dan Miller, state director with Pro-Life Wisconsin, said in an online post announcing the clinic's opening. "Please pray that its business plan fails." Kliegman said the clinic's location provides free, on-site private parking for clients in order to reduce potential interactions with protestors. Kliegman said the clinic will fill a critical gap in quality abortion care and other reproductive and sexual health services in Wisconsin by serving people of all needs and backgrounds, regardless of ability to pay. In Wisconsin, obtaining an abortion is a two-day process. State law requires the patient receive a consult and ultrasound on the first day, then return for the procedure. Kliegman said unlike other clinics in the state, Care for All will not be charging its patients for the ultrasound. Clinic doctors plan to accept Medicaid for all non-abortion services. Alexandria Kohn is the Care for All board chair. She said the clinic is striving to have patients feel they are supported throughout their time at the clinic. "We want clients to feel like they matter, and they're not just another statistic," Kohn said. "If we accomplish that, I would feel like I am making a difference."
