Rally rubbish claim sparks debate

Eyesore: The overflowing bags of rubbish and discarded plastic cups seen here were part of the 20 tonnes left behind after the Turun Anwar rally. — Photo courtesy of Nga Kor Ming A HEATED exchange erupted in the Dewan Rakyat after Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming defended his earlier statement that 20 metric tonnes of rubbish were left behind after the recent Turun Anwar rally. He said the figure was based on findings from Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp). 'These numbers are not from me, but from SWCorp. 'Hundreds of their workers were mobilised to clear streets of rubbish following the rally. 'I do not deny that there were PAS members who had helped clear the waste, and I thank them. 'But I also cannot deny that there were 20 metric tonnes of rubbish left across Sogo, Dataran Merdeka and Petaling Street,' Nga told Datuk Awang Hashim (PN–Pendang), who asked for clarification on the figure. Awang demanded proof, saying that it was improbable that the rally participants had left behind that much rubbish. 'If there are no facts, then it is a lie,' said the Opposition MP. Nga replied that the data came from SWCorp. 'Even their CEO worked till late in the night during the clean-up,' he added. Several Opposition MPs then stood up and objected to Nga's claim; however, Deputy Speaker Alice Lau told Awang to stop speaking and allowed Nga to continue responding to other questions. The rally drew a crowd of about 18,000, according to the Kuala Lumpur police. On another matter, Nga said over 2,000 business premises were seized after their owners were found to have committed offences, including transferring their operating permits and licences to foreign nationals. Since 2023, he said as many as 14,834 compound notices have been issued, 23 licences revoked and 2,880 business premises seized for various offences. Overall, a total of 11,973 compounds were issued, 13 licences revoked and 2,727 seizures made in operations across 12 local authorities. 'Local authorities have never permitted foreign nationals to apply for or own any trading licences for small businesses, including sundry stores, restaurants, workshops and markets,' Nga told Mohd Hasnizan Harun (PN-Hulu Selangor). Mohd Hasnizan had asked about the ministry's efforts to tackle the issue of foreign nationals running businesses in Malaysia, especially sundry stores.

‘No tolerance' for foreigners holding hawker licences

PETALING JAYA: Local authorities have never permitted foreigners to apply for or hold hawker licences, small trader permits or business premises licences, and any violations will not be tolerated, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming told the Dewan Rakyat yesterday. Replying to Mohd Hasnizan Harun (PN–Hulu Selangor) regarding the presence of foreign traders in Malaysia's retail sector, Nga said the restriction was clearly outlined under the Hawker By-Laws and the Licensing of Trades, Businesses and Industries By-Laws. 'It must be stressed that the ministry and local authorities have never allowed any foreign nationals to apply for or own hawker or small business licences, business premises, grocery stores, eateries, car workshops or markets,' he said during Minister's Question Time. Nga said since 2023, a total of 3,703 enforcement operations had been carried out across the country targeting business premises operated by or involving foreign nationals. As a result, 14,834 compounds were issued, 23 licences revoked and 2,880 business premises sealed due to various breaches of local authority rules, including cases where Malaysian traders had illegally transferred licences or permits to foreigners. 'This is because the government is highly committed to supporting citizens through business opportunities, including offering business premises at below-market rental rates. These facilities must not be misused for the benefit of foreign nationals,' he said. The Teluk Intan MP added that local authorities will not compromise on any breach of licence conditions. Violators may face stern action, including compound fines, seizure of goods, business closures and licence revocations.

Malaysian minister reaffirms no foreigners allowed to hold hawker or small trader licences

Mr Nga said during Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat, the lower house of Malaysia's parliament on Monday (Jul 28), that the long-standing policy follows existing hawker by-laws, along with trade, business, and industrial by-laws. 'PBT do not recognise or allow foreign nationals to operate as hawkers or small traders,' Mr Nga said in response to a question from Hulu Selangor MP Mohd Hasnizan Harun, who asked about the current policy on foreigners operating businesses in Malaysia, particularly its retail sector. 'PBT do not permit the employment of foreign nationals as workers or assistants under hawker licences within PBT premises,' he added. Mr Nga shared a Malay proverb— kera di hutan disusukan, anak di rumah mati kelaparan —which highlights the misplaced priority of 'feeding the monkey in the jungle while one's own child at home dies of hunger', to underline the government's commitment to prioritising locals. However, the minister clarified that foreigners can still work as workers or assistants in other licensed businesses, as long as they have valid work permits or passes. He also warned licence holders that local authorities will take 'stern action' against any breach of licensing conditions. '(Authorities) will not compromise,' he said, adding that they may seize goods, issue fines, close premises, or revoke licences if any business or licence holder is found to be violating the law. /TISG Read also: Singapore restaurateurs expand regionally amid soaring rents, labour shortages, and shrinking consumer spending in SG Featured image by Depositphotos (for illustration purposes only) () => { const trigger = if ('IntersectionObserver' in window && trigger) { const observer = new IntersectionObserver((entries, observer) => { => { if ( { lazyLoader(); // You should define lazyLoader() elsewhere or inline here // Run once } }); }, { rootMargin: '800px', threshold: 0.1 }); } else { // Fallback setTimeout(lazyLoader, 3000); } });

Nga Kor Ming chastises ‘Turun Anwar' rally-goers for littering; trolled to 'stop talking rubbish'

Editor's Note: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming had in the Dewan Rakyat today (July 28) stood by his statement that 20 metric tonnes of rubbish were left scattered following Saturday's (July 26) PAS-inspired 'Turun Anwar' rally. He went on to attribute the data to the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) which carried out the clean-up after the rally ended. THE fallout from the 'Turun Anwar' rally over the weekend has begun. Not with a dramatic stepping down of PMX but rather the more prosaic need to clean up after exercising one's democratic rights. This came about as Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming slammed the actions of rally participants who threw garbage everywhere, thus causing inconvenience to sanitation workers. Through a post on the X platform, the Teluk Intan MP stressed that due to the irresponsible actions of the opposition supporters, the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) had to work hard to clean up the mess left behind. Selaku Menteri yg menjaga agensi pembersihan awam @swcorp_my,saya berasa amat kesal dgn kelakuan PN yg kotor & membuang sampah di merata tempat. Krjn Madani meraikan demokrasi & tiada halangan dgn perhimpunan aman tapi tolonglah jaga kebersihan. Jangan memalukan negara. Faham? — Nga Kor Ming (@NgaKorMing) July 26, 2025 'As the Minister in charge of the public cleaning agency, I feel very sorry for the dirty behaviour of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) and the dumping of garbage everywhere,' he remarked on Saturday (July 26). 'The Madani government celebrates democracy and there is no obstacle to peaceful assemblies, but please maintain cleanliness. Don't embarrass the country.' It was claimed that 20 metric tonnes or 20,000kg of rubbish was left behind by the participants of the gathering. The opposition's response was sharp and swift, accusing Nga instead of twisting the facts and being quite poor at maths! According to PAS information chief Fadhli Shaari, if the claim was true, it would have put the attendance closer to 200,000 participants rather than 20,000. As expected, battle lines were drawn with commenter's party loyalties clearly on display. Nga's ropey calculations were called into question by various commenters with many asking how the DAP national deputy chairman derived such a figure. The cops after all had placed the attendance in the region of 18,000 protesters. Many netizens also highlighted the brazen hypocrisy, citing the damage caused at previous rallies that were pro-Pakatan Harapan (PH) in nature. More than a few highlighted the damaged police vehicle at a previous BERSIH rally (in 2011). Electoral disgruntlement was obvious with plenty of commenters asking Nga if there were no other issues to highlight. The recent gas explosion at Putra Heights, Selangor was a glaring example of a pertinent issue that needed to be discussed but could have conveniently swept under the carpet. Comments on the PAS lawmaker's Facebook page was even more scathing with many calling for Nga and the Madani administration to step down. One commenter argued that PH coalition's attitudes has not changed whether they were in opposition or in Putrajaya. Of course, racist comments are never far off whenever a DAP politician speaks with one equating the 'fight' against the 'communists' as some sort of jihad (martyrdom). It accused these 'communists' as always looking for opportunities to 'betray the Malays and seize the country'. Few things this storm-in-a-teacup highlights. The stench of hypocrisy is always prevalent. As rightly pointed out, the damage and mess caused by earlier pro-PH rallies were just as bad, if not worse. Secondly, didn't Nga's PR team brief him on the maths? His claims would inadvertently place a lot more protestors at the scene, surely not something he was aiming for. Last not least, when will Malaysians learn to focus on the pertinent issue at hand? Criticise him by all means for talking rubbish (pun fully intended) but not because of his ethnicity. – July 28, 2025

Uproar in Dewan after minister claims 20 tonnes of rubbish left post-rally

Housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming said the government has no issue with peaceful assemblies but that protesters must not litter. KUALA LUMPUR : A brief uproar ensued in the Dewan Rakyat today after housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming claimed that 20 tonnes of rubbish had to be cleared following the anti-Anwar Ibrahim rally last weekend. Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) demanded proof of this claim, saying it was impossible for protesters to have left behind that much rubbish as the majority of those who took part in the Turn Anwar gathering on Saturday had only brought bottled water. 'Show me proof that 20 tonnes of rubbish (were cleared). Only then I will say you're not lying,' he said. Nga said his claim was based on figures provided by the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation, a government agency. He said while the government had no issue with peaceful assemblies, protesters must not litter. 'I'm only reprimanding litterbugs. I'm not accusing (Pendang) of being one. 'I do not deny the fact that PAS's Amal unit helped clean the area,' he said, referring to the party's volunteer corps. 'Yet, 20 tonnes of rubbish were strewn around the capital, in areas such as Sogo and Dataran Merdeka.' Several opposition MPs including Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu) and Idris Ahmad (PN-Bagan Serai) then stood to object to Nga's claim. However, deputy speaker Alice Lau instructed Awang to not interrupt Nga and to allow him to finish answering the oral questions. Yesterday, Nga was reported as saying that sewage and waste management company Alam Flora Sdn Bhd cleaners only managed to finish cleaning up the litter at 3.30am on Sunday.
