Heat warning in effect in Hamilton, surrounding areas could feel like 39

A heat warning has been issued for Hamilton, Niagara, Burlington and surrounding areas from Sunday until Tuesday, according to Environment Canada. Monday is set to be the hottest in Hamilton with a high of 31 C, but it may feel more like 39 with the humidity factored in. "There is some uncertainty in the duration of the heat event for some regions ... Over some areas the heat event could persist into Wednesday," the weather agency said in its heat warning. Tuesday is expected to see a high of 31 C and a low of 20 C. Environment Canada recommends people check on those who are vulnerable, stay hydrated and watch out for symptoms of heat exhaustion. "Signs may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue," said the weather agency. It also suggests people close their blinds and open windows if it feels cooler outside than inside. Using a fan or air conditioner, limiting direct exposure to the sun, and wearing lightweight, light-coloured clothing also advised. The medical officer of health for the City of Hamilton initiated a heat warning starting Sunday. The city and some community agencies will open cooling areas for people to go to during the heat and humidity.

Sightseeing in Niagara Falls this summer? Here's 10 budget-friendly eateries for cash-conscious tourists and residents

You've taken in the views. Enjoyed several of the attractions. Now, you're looking for a place to grab a bite but don't want to break the bank. Here's a list of some nonchain restaurants to eat at on a budget in Niagara Falls: Chengdu Noodles is at 7940 Lundy's Lane. Chengdu Noodles highlights authentic Sichuan dishes at unbeatable prices. Including crispy deep-fried tofu, fiery beef jerky, rich Dan Dan noodles and tangy sweet and sour pork ribs, its offerings impress both in taste and affordability. The most expensive dish on the menu is $12.99. And, as Milan Curcic writes in this Tastes of Niagara column , if you're wondering whether there's a catch, there isn't. Country Fresh Donuts is at 5076 Victoria Ave. This popular, long-established coffee shop is more known for its won ton soup than its name suggests. And for good reason, as the last time this reporter checked, a large won ton soup cost less than $10. Country Fresh Donuts is so popular for its won ton soup that a car crashing through its front window in April 2014 created a public craze . Particularly the story telling readers the restaurant would reopen at 5 a.m. on Nov. 12, 2014. Word spread like wildfire. People lined up outside the door. They posted online selfies of themselves in line, or getting ready to feast on won ton soup. Days after reopening, the lineup was still out the door. The Flying Saucer Restaurant is at 6768 Lundy's Lane. An attraction unto itself, this UFO-looking restaurant has long prided itself as being the 'home of out-of-this-world food at down-to-earth prices.' The space-themed decor and budget-friendly menu has brought visitors through its doors for 50 years. It's particularly a popular breakfast spot for families, with the early bird breakfast offered 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and the E.T. Special, which features buttermilk pancakes, three large eggs, two sausages, two strips of bacon, home fries and Texas toast, priced at $15.49. Hi-Lite Restaurant is at 4524 Queen St. This vintage-style eatery has been serving hearty meals to a loyal customer base for more than 90 years. As summed up by one customer in a Google review posted on its website: 'Food was served hot and service was so good. I had a clubhouse sandwich with fries/gravy. Niagara's secret gem on Queen Street. Prices are super cheap. I can't wait to return.' Hi-Lite Restaurant offers all-day breakfast, including eggs and pancakes, and a wide variety of lunch staples, including its popular clubhouse sandwich, fish and chips, burgers and authentic Greek gyro, with a side of fresh cut fries. Many items are priced between $10 and $15. The building was renovated five years ago, but still retains that nostalgic diner feeling, bringing customers back in time. Queen's Coach Family Restaurant is at 2845 St. Paul Ave. Located in a charming old coach house, this family-owned gem has been serving the community since 1995. Loyal customers have flocked there for a quick, hot breakfast, satisfying lunch or relaxed dinner, including a range of vegan options. It offers a wide selection of hearty, home-cooked meals, with generous portions at affordable prices. For example, customers can find some breakfast platters for $5.99 and entrees for as low as $13.99. Betty's Restaurant is at 8921 Sodom Rd. A well-known family-owned spot that has been serving up homestyle meals in a comfortable setting at reasonable prices since 1967. The portions are so large you're likely to have leftovers. Betty's is famous for its fish and chips but also has a wide-ranging menu sure to satisfy all palates, including homemade pies. For example, its sandwiches and burgers range in price between $10 and $16. Cheryl's Deli & Subs is at 4912 Victoria Ave. Sometimes just a quick sub will do. And at Cheryl's Deli & Subs, they come massive and packed with whatever choice of protein and toppings you choose. The little sub shop is tucked away in an unassuming storefront on Victoria Avenue, yet it's so popular because of the value customers get. Everything is fresh as the meat and vegetables are sliced for every sub, with nothing that goes into the subs coming from a package. Clancy's Sports Bar & Restaurant is at 5233 Stanley Ave. Since 1981, Clancy's has been one of Niagara Falls' most popular sports bars. It's known for its pizza, chicken wings and late-night eats at affordable prices. A few of the menu highlights include a Kentucky-inspired bluegrass chicken sandwich with fries or garden salad for $16.50 and a loaded steak and cheese sub with fries or garden salad for $18. Chip 'n Charlie's Bar & Eatery is at 8189 Lundy's Lane. Similar to Clancy's, but in the southwest end of the city, is Chip 'n Charlie's Eatery & Bar. Whether you're there to watch your favourite sports team and/or enjoy a filling, yet affordable, meal, Chip's, as the locals often call it, has built a following since it opened 20 years ago. With a bar area that's usually filled with regulars engaged in good conversation and a roomy dining area since the business expanded years ago, most of its menu items are less than $20, with many around $15. For example, two-piece fish and chips costs $16 and five-piece chicken fingers and fries are $15. While it may be in the heart of the Fallsview core, Zappi's Pizza & Pasta doesn't slam you with tourist-driven prices. The family-owned business has been making authentic pizzas and Italian dishes from scratch since 1971. Its hearty three-layer lasagna is $15.25, while its calzones are about $16. Zappi's has been recognized as part of the Niagara Falls Review Readers' Choice Awards for best family restaurant and best pizzeria from 2008 through 2023 and was also the recipient of Tripadvisor Certificates of Excellence between those years.
