Niamh Rockett digs Waterford out after early Banner blitz to reach All-Ireland semi-final

All-Ireland senior camogie quarter-final: Waterford 2-20 Clare 2-10 Seventeen years after making her intercounty debut, Niamh Rockett scored 1-11 and kept her dream of completing what would be a sensational premier junior, intermediate and senior grand slam alive as Waterford survived the most searching of tests before stretching away to a 10-point victory in a pulsating All-Ireland senior camogie quarter-final against Clare. At the other end of the field, Vikki Falconer marked her return to Croke Park two years after buckling in the early minutes of the All-Ireland final with what proved to be a cruciate knee ligament injury, by providing an imperious defending display. Falconer was given a bit of trouble early on by Róisín Begley, but by the second half, she was emerging from every ruck going with the sliotar, carrying, finding a team-mate, returning to base camp. Rinse. Repeat. Don't be fooled by the margin though. This was a deficit that was harsh on Clare, even if Waterford could have had three or four goals in the first half. READ MORE That they didn't was down to the goalkeeping of Rachael Daly, who dived full length to save a Beth Carton penalty and made another stop on the industrious Máiréad O'Brien, while Abby Flynn was denied by some last-ditch defending by Susan Daly and Clare Hehir, and Sinéad O'Keeffe put her body on the line to deny Flynn another chance. Photograph: Leah Scholes/Inpho The Dalys were joined in defence by their triplet sibling Lynda, who recovered from a first-half injury to play well, while their younger sister Jennifer was a constant threat, scoring two points. Áine O'Loughlin pounced for two goals in the first half, the first an absolute piledriver in the 15th minute after Begley found her peeling off Kate Lynch. Eight minutes later, she got her hand to a low ball, turning to send a shot in off the far post. Their work rate had Waterford struggling to get out of defence and make any real inroads up top. Annie Fitzgerald and Flynn were largely clinical when opportunities presented themselves, while Flynn and Rockett combined well for a couple of scores. It looked like hard work for the Déise but a turnover deep in injury time created a two-on-one. When Flynn fed Fitzgerald, the Gaill Tír dynamo made no mistake from close range to give Waterford a 1-11 to 2-5 lead. By now, Mick Boland had moved Keeley Corbett Barry back on O'Loughlin, with Lynch sitting in front. Áine O'Loughlin celebrates a goal for Clare. Photograph: Tom O'Hanlon/Inpho Clare introduced Ellen Casey at the end of the third quarter and the Newmarket-on-Fergus woman had a shot from a free well saved by Brianna O'Regan. O'Loughlin continued to cause trouble but by hook, and perhaps sometimes by crook, Waterford kept the Banner skipper at bay. Waterford captain Lorraine Bray got more into the game towards the finish with a couple of points, one of which was a solid goal chance. Clare Hehir lofted three frees over the bar from distance for the Banner and it was still all to play for when Rockett exchanged passes with sub Maggie Gostl to goal in the 55th minute. The St Anne's sharpshooter had to stretch but just beat the advancing Rachael Daly to flick to the net and put eight between the counties. Points from Rockett and Fitzgerald, who blazed just over after somehow working her way in from the endline, made it a double-figure margin, which will have fooled nobody, but for Waterford the key was ensuring a third semi-final appearance in four seasons. Waterford to face Clare and Tipperary v Kilkenny in All-Ireland camogie quarter-finals

WATERFORD WILL TAKE on Clare, while Tipperary will play neighbours Kilkenny in the Glen Dimplex All-Ireland senior camogie quarter-finals next weekend. The composition of the knockout ties, which will be played along with the All-Ireland senior hurling semi-finals in mouth-watering double-headers at Croke Park on Saturday (2.30pm) and Sunday (1.30pm) respectively, was determined after the final round of action today. Champions Cork and last year's runners-up Galway have qualified directly to the semi-finals as a result of winning their groups, while at the other end of the scale, Wexford will play Derry with senior status on the line. Galway came on strong down the stretch with the last five points to see off Waterford by 0-16 to 0-11 at Kenny Park. Advertisement The sides were level on 0-7 apiece after a keenly contested opening half where Niamh Rockett and Carrie Dolan did most of the scoring. The Galway skipper got the scoreboard moving with a sixth minute free and she was responsible for six of her side's first-half points – she finished with nine – with Niamh Mallon's minor after 20 minutes the hosts' only score from play in that period. They led by two points on a few occasions but as Rockett brought her tally to four (one from play) and Annie Fitzgerald began to really enjoy herself with three points, it was all to play for at the break. Once more, it was Cathal Murray's players that got off to the quicker start, with Mallon's influence growing significantly. The All-Star grabbed three more points from play as her side established a 0-11 to 0-8 advantage at the three-quarter mark. Waterford bridged that gap in the next ten minutes thanks to Rockett (free), Beth Carton and Eimear O'Neill but Mick Boland's charges didn't score again, while Galway moved up another gear with five straight points, including a brace each from Dolan and Aoife Donohue, to secure the spoils and inflict a first defeat of the campaign on Waterford. Tipperary continued their rehabilitation after a chastening opening round defeat to Cork by defeating fellow Group 1 qualifiers Clare to the tune of 4-17 to 0-10 at FBD Semple Stadium. It was done and dusted at the change of ends, as the home side blitzed the Banner girls early on and three first-half goals ensured a 13-point advantage at half-time, 3-9 to 0-5. Róisín Begley opened the scoring for Clare but Mary Burke grabbed the first of her two goals after 11 minutes. Casey Hennessy raised a green flag before Burke posted her second and it was a cruise for Denis Kelly's outfit from there, Hennessy also notching up a second goal. Grace O'Brien lofted eight points into the bargain, while Clare lacked any real scoring threat, Ziyan Spillane proving their top scorer with three points. In the day's other two games, champions Cork continued on their merry way against a Wexford side already certain of being involved in the relegation final at Chadwicks Wexford Park, racking up a 5-21 to 0-11 triumph in a merciless performance. A run of a goal and eight points consecutively broke the back of proceedings, the goal coming from Amy O'Connor. Saoirse McCarthy shuddered the net and it was 2-12 to 0-3 at the break, Chloe Cashe registering the Yellowbellies' scores. Clodagh Finn grabbed a deserved goal in the second half, having been denied twice by excellent saves from Keeva Steadmond and though Wexford offered more after the resumption, O'Connor racked up her hat-trick of goals with two clinical finishes. Waterford duo named as May winners of Women's GAA Player of the Month awards

Waterford duo Niamh Rockett and Kellyann Hogan are the May winners of the PwC GPA Women's Player of the Month awards for camogie and football. Meanwhile, Limerick talisman Cian Lynch and Donegal's Michael Murphy have been named the PwC GAA/GPA Hurler and Footballer of the month, respectively. Advertisement The Player of the Month awards aim to recognise the country's standout players from the Provincial Championships as well as the opening rounds of the 2025 All-Ireland Championships. Niamh Rockett made history with the Déise as they recorded their first ever senior championship victory over Kilkenny in Nowlan Park, on May 31st. Rockett, who has this year taken over free taking duties, scored nine of Waterford's 17 points, including three in the final minutes to secure the victory. Rockett will look to continue her scintillating form in the next round as Waterford take on Dublin Saturday, June 21st. Advertisement The Waterford ladies football team came agonisingly close to overcoming the reigning All-Ireland champions Kerry with Kellyann Hogan's six well taken scores a key factor in the Déise running Kerry close. Hogan dusted herself off and put in a dominant performance in nine-point victory against Cork in Dungarvan, booking a rematch against the Kingdom in the Munster Football Championship final. Hogan was first on the scoreboard and delivered a standout performance in the middle of the park throughout. Four scores from the Ballymacarby clubwoman were unfortunately not enough however as Waterford tasted defeat at the hands of the Kingdom once more. Cian Lynch and Michael Murphy A month in which Cian Lynch delivered commanding performances for Limerick in the Munster Hurling Championship has earned him the May player of the month award. Advertisement Cian Lynch (L) and Michael Murphy (R). Photo (R): Inpho/Leah Scholes Two pivotal wins over Waterford and Cork kept the six in a row dream alive with Lynch being the focal point in each. Three scores accompanied by an array of immaculate skills earned Lynch the Man of the Match award after a six-point triumph over Waterford. In the next clash against league champions Cork in the TUS Gaelic Grounds, Limerick and Lynch in particular showed up from the opening whistle. The Limerick captain and playmaker was instrumental in a decisive 16-point victory which booked Limerick's spot in their seventh consecutive Munster final. Donegal stalwart Michael Murphy has been awarded the May player of the month award for his inspirational performances throughout the month, none more prominent than the Ulster title decider versus defending All-Ireland champions Armagh. After taking a year off Murphy appears to be back to his best, dominating aerial contests and overpowering his opposition. Advertisement A repeat of last year's Ulster final, the returning Murphy was the difference-maker, scoring three points and helping set up plenty more as Donegal retained their provincial crown. Murphy followed this up with an eight-point haul in a defeat against Tyrone in the All-Ireland series. Managing Partner at PwC Ireland, Enda McDonagh, said: 'May brought a series of exceptional performances across all codes, as thrilling provincial campaigns concluded and the All-Ireland Championship series burst into life. 'On behalf of everyone at PwC, heartfelt congratulations to Niamh, Kellyann, Cian, and Michael on being honoured as May's Players of the Month."
