Nicholas Hoult reveals 'worryingly' dangerous hobby that leaves film bosses terrified for the Superman star's safety

Nicholas Hoult has revealed his 'worryingly' dangerous hobby of racing Ferraris and said he has to often reassure film bosses. The British actor, 35, who plays Lex Luthor in the new Superman movie, explained just how terrifying his love of speed can be. The father-of-two told The Daily Mirror: 'The fastest I drove was at the Circuit of the Americans in Texas, we hit about 170mph'. 'I was trying not to glance down because you might miss something. Going in a straight line fast isn't the worrying bit. It's going around the corners, that's when things can go wrong'. Nicholas often shares his love for racing to Instagram alongside snaps of himself posing alongside numerous Ferrari supercars. In one gushing post he said: 'Since I was a kid I loved racing, I grew up watching F1 with my dad and now I get to share the passion with my boy. Never thought I'd get the chance to drive myself, dream come true' Nicholas is wed to stunning model Bryana Holly, 31, and together the fiercely private couple share son Joaquin, six, and another child born in 2022. Last year he confirmed the couple were married after sparking speculation when he referred to her as his 'wife'. The couple, who rarely make public appearances together, officially began dating in 2016 after meeting in Los Angeles. Warner Bros. released a new trailer for Superman earlier this month, as fans flocked to pick up their tickets just as they went on sale, seemingly at a record pace. Amazon announced also a special offer for Prime members to see Superman a few days before its July 11 release, with early screenings on July 8. With the trailer's debut on Wednesday, it was also announced by Fandango that the Prime early screenings were the ticket retailer's best first-day ticket pre-sales of 2025. Fans have not been hesitating to scoop up their own tickets for the July 11 release, with many taking to social media to show off their ticket purchases. Early box office projections have already been quite huge, with early numbers suggesting it could open between $154 million and $175 million. If this record pace continues, it could be even higher, as fans have continued to express their excitement on social media all day on Wednesday after the new trailer dropped. The trailer begins with a massive skyscraper falling and Superman (David Corenswet) swooping in to stop it from hitting the ground as we hear Lex Luthor (Nicholas) detailing his plan to destroy the Man of Steel. Luthor and his minions are seen destroying Superman's Fortress of Solitude, while we also see Superman/Clark Kent making out with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), along with shots of his parents (Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell). Droids are seeing picking up a battered Superman and taking him to the Fortress, along with shots of Superman in battle with Luthor's various henchfolk. One particular shot fans have been cheering for shows Superman and his beloved dog Krypto the Superdog battle an enemy, literally punching his teeth out and hitting the camera lens, breaking the proverbial 'fourth wall.' Superman is also see clashing with the abrasive Green Lantern character Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), who challenges him to, 'make a move, big blue.' More shots show people all over the world rooting for Superman, which infuriates Luthor, who says, 'They chose him, let them die.' An exhausted Superman is also seen on the ground during a battle, as Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) tells him, 'Hey, quit messing around!' Superman responds playfully (and tiredly), 'I'm not messing around, I'm doing important stuff,' another line that has clearly resonated with fans on social media. The final shot shows Superman using his eyeball lasers to take out a slew of enemies, which fans have praised as well, such as @UpToTASK, who said, 'YOOOOOOOOOOOOOO this is hard AF #Superman.' Another fan dubbed @DCUSuperboy said in all caps, 'I GENUINELY DON'T KNOW HOW YOU CAN LOOK AT THIS AND NOT BE HYPED FOR #SUPERMAN.' Of course, not everyone was as excited, with many like @agamelift still praising director Zack Snyder for his previous DCEU films. 'The #Superman blueprint is @ZackSnyder. This movie looks like complete garbage - Guardians of the Galaxy with Superman while copying major elements of Man of Steel and doing them worse. Yes, clearly the plot leak a few months back was legit,' he said. Others like Aaron Fischer blasted the movie for its comedic elements, stating he has, 'lost all hope for this film,' adding it will be, 'stupid and silly.' Still, many were so excited they bought tickets immediately, like @SupermanOnFilm, who said, 'I've already bought 8 tickets for opening weekend #Superman.'

Nicholas Hoult Recalls Auditioning for ‘Superman' on the Same Day as David Corenswet

Before he landed the role of the villain, Lex Luthor, Nicholas Hoult had his eye on playing the hero, Superman. Nicholas Hoult and David Corenswet stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote their upcoming film, Superman, which was directed and written by James Gunn. The guest host, Diego Luna, asked them about their audition process. Yes, I auditioned for Superman,' Hoult responded before Corenswet added that they auditioned on the 'same day' and crossed each other. The Hollywood Reporter revealed in 2023 that Hoult was one of the finalists for the role of Superman. However, the part went to Corenswet. 'I walked out of doing one of my audition scenes, and I was like, 'Yeah, not bad. OK,' And I walked around the corner, and there was lots of shadows on the studio lot and then one ray of sunshine,' Hoult recalled. 'David had taken a seat in this ray of sunshine and was sitting there, charging up from the sun like Superman does, getting his power.' The Nosferatu actor continued, 'I walked over to say hello, and he stood up, and I was like, 'Goddamn, he's about an inch taller than me. Look at his hair. Look at his jawline.' And then he started speaking, and I shook his hand, and I was like, 'His hands are a bit bigger than me.' And then he spoke, and I was like, 'Oh, his voice is a little bit deeper too.' And in that moment, whilst we were shaking hands, I was like, 'I'd be happy if this guy was Superman. I was like, 'You're perfect for it.'' Corenswet added that he 'admired Nick as an actor for a long time' and that getting to meet him when they were 'both dressed as Clark Kent' was 'a bit weird' but 'wonderful.' However, he said, 'The day that I found out that he had agreed to play Lex Luthor, I thought, 'This may be the best thing that happens to this film because a superhero is only as interesting as their villain.'' Superman star Nicholas Hoult reveals new 'love' after secret wedding

Nicholas Hoult is taking on the iconic role first made famous by Gene Hackman in an all new cast for the much anticipated DC Comics' movie Superman, released in UK cinemas in July It has been almost 50 years since Christopher Reeve took on the iconic role of Superman and made the world believe a man can fly. But next month, a new generation will embark on the Man of Steel's latest adventures, when director James Gunn's reboot of the superhero saga hits cinemas, as part of a new era from the DC Comics universe. ‌ Rising star David Corenswet is donning the famous red cape for the eagerly awaited fantasy movie, which follows Superman's journey to reconcile his alien Krypton heritage with his adoptive human family on Earth. ‌ Cast as Superman's arch enemy Lex Luthor - a role made famous by the late Gene Hackman in the original 1978 movie - for British actor Nicholas Hoult, this is the chance to join Hollywood's elite. Nicholas, 35, has starred in hit movies Mad Max: Fury Road, X Men: Apocalypse, Tolkien and last year's Oscar nominated gothic vampire hit Nosferatu. But, after being hooked on the Superman origins TV series Smallville growing up, he feels he was destined to play Lex Luthor. ‌ He says: "Back in 2001 when Smallville came out I was 11 or 12. 'Since then I have seen the Superman movies." James Gunn's new movie takes inspiration from the 12 issue All-Star Superman fantasy comic books. ‌ And Nicholas could not wait to replicate the bald headed Luthor from the comics, saying: "At one time I was thinking of letting my two boys shave it for me. "I have shaved my head before for Mad Max: Fury Road. That was in-fact the last time I shaved it." ‌ Nicholas also grabbed the chance to "buff up" after noticing that Luthor was as muscular as Superman in the DC comics. He says: "There's that bit in All-Star Superman where he (Superman) talks about his muscles being real and hard work and all that. I kind of took that as a little bit of fuel for the fire. ‌ "I do try and exercise most days. I boxed for quite a few years.' An actor since he was three, when he appeared as Bobby in the 1996 movie Intimate Relations, starring Dame Julie Walters and Rupert Graves, a few years later Nicholas was spotted by the famous London-based Sylvia Young Theatre Agency. ‌ His sister Rosanna and brother James were also interested in acting and he would tag along if they went to classes. "One time, my older sister went to meet someone from Sylvia Young and they were like, 'Well, we will represent all your kids'. So that was kind of it,' he says. And, in 2002, aged 11, his life changed forever when he got his movie breakthrough, starring alongside Hugh Grant in the hit film About A Boy. ‌ At first, Nicholas was reluctant to take the part, fearing his schooling would suffer. But his role as lonely schoolboy Marcus thrilled critics and helped make the movie almost £100 million at the box office. "Doing About A Boy when I was 11, that was a big step up for me,' he says, admitting he did not expect his success to continue - especially as everyone around him warned how often child actors became troubled. 'I felt as if I would like to continue doing it, but I also had a little bit of hesitancy, because it was like 'I don't know if this will work', he says. ‌ But About A Boy was lauded by critics and, just five years later, Nicholas was cast as the lead in the hit teenage drama Skins. The ground-breaking E4 series, which followed a group of sixth formers in Bristol, was perhaps the first of its kind to tackle issues such as mental illness, depression, eating disorders and sexuality. ‌ And it gave Nicholas his first glimpse into the good and bad aspects of celebrity. 'I remember sitting inside a car outside Marylebone station in London. At one point, people just stood outside the car watching me,' he says. "I remember just feeling that it was scary and I was like, 'I don't know about this'". ‌ He feared that he would spend his life being watched. Today, Nicholas is certainly one of Britain's most watched stars. Since Skins, he has appeared alongside Colin Firth in fashion designer Tom Ford's 2009 movie A Single Man, as well as appearing in the X Men film series Deadpool 2 and in the Golden Globe nominated TV comedy drama series The Great. ‌ Recently, he appeared in a music video for The Rolling Stones and he's provided voiceovers for children's movies such as Watership Down and The Garfield Movie. Nicholas says his love of acting is inherited from his distant aunt, Dame Anna Neagle, who was voted the most popular actress in Britain back in 1949. He says: "She was a great, great aunt somehow removed. We never met. I'm not entirely fully sure how we're connected, but that is what I've been told. I don't know if it's (acting) in my blood. ‌ "Acting wasn't something that I woke up one morning and did on my own accord. I was doing it and I enjoyed it and carried on." Outside work, Nicholas shares his life with his two sons and Californian model wife Bryan Holly. Last November, he revealed to the world that they had secretly married, having dated since 2016. ‌ He also has a new love - for racing Ferraris. ‌ He says: "The fastest I drove was at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas. I think we hit about 170mph on the back straight there. "Weirdly, I was trying not to glance down because traveling at that speed you don't really want to glance down too long, because you might miss something. "Going in the straight line fast isn't the worrying bit. It's going around the corners fast, which is more scary, because that's when things can go wrong." ‌ Nicholas, who has now graduated from Ferrari's Corso Pilota driving school, says his hobby means he has to reassure film studio bosses that he is not putting himself at risk. And he has received legal contracts from worried movie execs. He says: 'Sometimes I sign them, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I'm like, 'Well, what's the risk here?'' ‌ Another thrill Nicholas enjoys is ice baths. He says: "I do love my cold plunge pool. I've got up to about two and a half minutes now. It is all about breathing. If you put your hands in it is a game changer. ‌ "I try to do it most days. The first minute is the toughest because that's when your body is like shocked. But once you go past the minute, you're kind of almost numb to it. "I see the benefits as it releases adrenaline. Also, mentally, I feel this kind of sharpness and clarity and all that sort of thing. "There was one day when I got in and I glanced at the clock, sat there a bit longer then glanced again. Then I realised the hand on the clock had jammed. I had no idea how long I'd been in there!" ‌ Once his Superman journey is over, Nicholas' next planned movie, in 2026, How To Rob A Bank, will reunite him with his Mad Max co-star Zoe Kravitz - daughter of rock star Lenny. Delighted with his career progress, Nicholas - whose heroes include Gary Oldman, Christian Bale, Clint Eastwood and Anthony Hopkins - feels he is finally improving as an actor. 'The 30s for an actor are hopefully when the roles get really good and interesting and whatever,' he says. "If I could go back 10 years and look now to this, I'd be thrilled."

'Underrated' horror movie hailed by fans finally arrives on Amazon Prime

A 'must see' horror movie has finally arrived on Amazon Prime Video, ready for us all to be terrified again. Nosferatu hit the big screen in 2024, with Bill Skarsgård leading a star-studded cast alongside Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Director Robert Eggers put his own stamp on the Dracula-inspired Gothic tale, following a young woman tortured by a psychic connection to an evil vampire. The film made a huge splash when it was released just a few months ago, and was branded 'chilling', 'hauntingly beautiful' and 'downright evil' by cinemagoers. It raked more than $181million at the global box office, earning four Oscar nominations for best cinematography, best costume design, best production design and best hair and makeup styling. The scare-fest will is now available to stream on Amazon Prime, just in case fans missed it in cinemas, or want another excuse to hide behind their sofa cushions. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Nosferatu currently commands an impressive critics Rotten Tomatoes score of 84%, compared to an audience ranking of 73%. Jonathan M praised: 'The new Nosferatu was fantastic – beautifully dark atmosphere and amazing performances all around. It stayed true to the spirit of the classic while adding some fresh twists that kept things interesting. 'A couple of scenes felt slightly long, but overall, it's one of the best horror films I've seen lately.' Tyler F said: 'A horror absolute must see. You cannot unsee this movie. It's one of those ones that sticks with you.' 'The best Dracula-related film ever made. Proper Gothic treatment of the film. Eggers has created a masterpiece that will continue to inspire future generations,' Darko J agreed. Ronald M commented: 'A horror movie that focuses more on psychological and atmospheric creepiness than gore and jump scares. A very enjoyable reimagining of the almost-lost classic and a welcome deviation from the usual Dracula story. 'Excellent make-up effects on Count Olaf, and even better sound design that makes the bloodsucking sound so visceral and violent.' Jacob M added: 'This film is underrated. The gradual introduction of Count Orlok. The attention shifted between characters. It's captivating. Darkness at its finest. A masterpiece.' The official synopsis simply reads: 'Robert Eggers' Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.' However, unpacking his experience on set, Nicholas – who played Thomas Hutter – revealed that the scares weren't just saved for the screen, as he had a terrifying moment on set with his animal co-stars. In a recent interview with Empire magazine, he was questioned on whether he was 'actually freaked out' during filming, and recalled the 'rules' he was given when meeting the Czech Shepherds playing the 'wolves'. 'They were Czech Shepherds, so they weren't wolves but part-wolf. When we met them with the animal handlers, they were like, 'Oh, they're just like dogs,'' he said. 'When we got to set, there was a moment before that scene where I'm running on the spot, trying to get my heart rate up. 'The wolves – it sent them crazy. They'd been told to chase me and then they saw me getting myself fired up, and they were barking, being held back on these leashes. I was like, 'Whoa! Whoooooaaa.' 'And there was one time doing that shot where I was running – they'd be like, 'Okay, three-two-one, action,' and I would go on three, and [the wolves] would be released on one – and there was one time where I slipped, trying to get out of the window. More Trending 'I was like, 'Well, I know these wolves have been released, and I know they're chasing me, but I never asked, like… 'What are they trained to do if they do get to me? What's the end goal here, what if I don't make it out the window??'' 'I remember after that take, [David] being like, 'You pulled a weird face, we can't use that.' That was real! That was a moment of real panic!' This article was first published on June 20. Nosferatu is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now. Got a story?
