Fife Flyers have confirmed that Canadian defenceman Ryan Nicholson is their latest recruit and the 26-year-old joins the club after a year in Finland where he played for RoKi in the Mestis League. Nicholson played five seasons in the NCAA for the RIT Tigers where he logged ice time in 161 games and a short spell with the Savannah Ghost Pirates in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) followed. Now he's coming to Kirkcaldy and Nicholson said: 'I feel very excited and grateful to be given the opportunity to play for one of the most historic clubs in the UK. 'I hope to be able to find a way to help contribute for the club to find success.' Jamie Russell, head coach and assistant general manager, commented: 'Ryan is a great defender with a high compete level. He is strong and an elite skater. We will use Ryan in all situations.' Comedian Rhys Nicholson goes rogue in his final Project appearance

Don't miss out on the headlines from TV. Followed categories will be added to My News. Comedian Rhys Nicholson went rogue during his final appearance on The Project on Tuesday night, calling Ten's decision to axe the program after 16 years 'bulls**t.' The comedian appeared on the panel for the final time on Tuesday, and looked down the barrel of the camera to deliver an impassioned speech about the show, which will come to an end this Friday. 'This is bulls**t, absolute bulls**t,' he said of the axing. 'This show is such a huge part of the ecosystem of this country. This is the first show that kind of had me on to be able to talk about things … I'm furious about it, and this is probably the last time I'll ever be on this network,' he declared. Rhys Nicholson went for it in his final seconds on The Project. With that in mind, Nicholson delivered one more on-air demand to the powers that be at Ten. 'Fix 10 Play,' he screamed, referring to the network's streaming platform. 'It doesn't work! It's like someone with arthritis slowly putting in a VHS.' The 'last week of school' vibes are strong over at The Project, because rather than swiftly moving on from Nicholson's passionate rant, the show's social media team clipped it up and shared it on Facebook and Instagram overnight, where it's been met with an enthusiastic response from fans sad the show is ending. 'He's absolutely right,' one viewer commented on Instagram. 'I thought my TV was the problem,' quipped one viewer over Nicholson's 10 Play complaint. The Project's final week on-air has so far seen several longtime panellists take their final bow with the program – last night, the always outspoken Kate Langbroek, who got a tearful thank you from co-host Sarah Harris for always feeling confident to speak her mind while live on-air. A day earlier, there were tears from fellow Project veteran Steve Price as he bid farewell to the show, revealing he'd brought his daughter along to sit in the studio audience and watch him on the panel one last time. The Project will air for the final time on Friday night with a special episode that's expected to feature appearances from the show's very first trio of hosts, from back in 2009: Charlie Pickering, Dave Hughes and arguably The Project's breakout star, Gold Logie winner Carrie Bickmore. La Grange Juneteenth event features recollections of cousin of Emmett Till

The 75 or so people who gathered June 19 for the annual Juneteenth commemoration in La Grange had a chance to hear the Rev. Wheeler Parker Jr. tell of some personal history. 'My story's not a pleasant story and it's not a pretty story, but it's history,' said Parker, the keynote speaker at the event at The Corral at Lyons Township High School South Campus. Parker grew up in nearby Summit and was the cousin of Emmett Till, who was murdered by Southern racists in Mississippi in 1955 for allegedly whistling at a white woman. He described the night Till was abducted and murdered, taken from their grandfather's house in the middle of the night. 'That was the last time we saw Emmett alive,' Parker said. Juneteenth, now a state and federal holiday, celebrates the day in 1865 that Union General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas, with 2,000 troops and issued General Order No. 3, informing enslaved Texans of their freedom. Although President Abraham Lincoln officially freed all those held in slavery with the Jan. 1, 1863 Emancipation Proclamation, the actual end of the 'peculiar institution' didn't happen all at once. The actual freeing of enslaved people occurred at varying times throughout the territories where slavery existed, depending on how far the Union Army had advanced. Texas, being in what was then the far Southwest portion of the United States, was the last territory under federal command to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. While the original celebrations of Juneteenth took place in Galveston, the holiday spread over time until it became the eleventh federal holiday in 2021. In La Grange, the commemoration also featured speeches from Billy 'Che' Brooks, former deputy minister of education for the Black Panther Party; Poshlyn Nicholson, of ChaseYouth; and Ramon Lacey, of Lace Up Athletics, the organizer and sponsor of the event. 'We support the community by building complete athletes for building a stronger community,' Lacey said. 'We use physical fitness, mentorship, and community service to combat things like childhood obesity and the opportunity gap. We provide community service events like this and others.' There were poetry readings by Nicholson and students from Nazareth Academy as well as a Juneteenth trivia game involving members of the audience. Actor Corin Rogers, of 'Cooley High' had a Black history exhibit and took questions from the audience. Nicholson was passionate in her discussion of the importance of celebrating the day. 'Juneteenth is a time of remembering what happened to our people and how we were disenfranchised,' she said. … 'Myself, I was not aware of how much Juneteenth meant to our community until about five years ago.' Brian Waterman, superintendent of Lyons Township High School District 204, welcomed the visitors to the temporary home of the Juneteenth celebration. 'I'm really excited that LT is the host school for it, I've went to it the last couple years,' he said. It's usually at the Community Center, so we're happy to step up and host this amazing event. It's always an event that a wide variety of our community comes out to support. I think the organizers did a great job.' Trustee Beth Augustine was among village leaders attending the event. 'It's extremely moving and I look forward to it going forward,' she said.

Singapore private club 1880's staff in bid to revive club with landlord RB Corp's support

[SINGAPORE] Following the abrupt closure of Singapore private members' club 1880 this week, The Business Times (BT) understands that its staff have banded together in an attempt to revive the business. A source told BT that they have made an offer to buy the club's assets, with support and backing from its landlord, RB Corp – a member of Singapore-based and privately-held property investment and development firm RB Capital Group. The group's flagship development at Robertson Quay includes the InterContinental Singapore Robertson Quay hotel where 1880 is located on the third level. The 22,000 square foot club has a restaurant, bar, spa and co-working space. Speaking to BT on condition of anonymity, a staff member confirmed that the 60-plus strong team that ran 1880 have come together to ask RB Corp for help after they were suddenly left jobless. 'We are 100 per cent ready to move forward together, with the same purpose and ethos that made the club possible,' said the employee. 'Most of us have been working there for a long time, with a handful right from when the club started.' The move came after staff were told by liquidators that they can expect to wait some six to 12 months before wages owed can be paid. 'Many people's livelihoods are on the line,' added the employee. 'Some are foreigners who have signed leases here. They are struggling and have taken personal loans.' The club was founded in 2017 by Canadian entrepreneur Marc Nicholson and has since established itself as a hub for discussions on topics ranging from global conflicts to social justice. Sign Up Sign Up On Tuesday (Jun 17), Nicholson announced to members and staff via e-mail and WhatsApp messages that the club was closing permanently, and that both its holding company 38 Degrees and operating company 1880 Pte Ltd have been placed into provisional liquidation. BT understands that 1880's local business here was profitable, but that it got into debt after aggressively expanding to Hong Kong and Bali. Its abrupt closure here follows that of its Hong Kong branch on May 30, just seven months after opening in the territory. The club was also building a six-storey beachside hotel in Bali that never opened. A source told BT that the staff's bid to revive 1880 will exclude any involvement from its three co-founders – Nicholson, his wife and club CEO Jean Low, and chairman Luke Jones. A check showed that the trio together own just under 80 per cent of 38 Degrees. The minority shareholders comprise many individuals and entities, including the landlord with a 5 to 6 per cent stake. BT understands that RB Corp is owed rent and has terminated the club's lease. When contacted, a representative from the company told BT: 'As 1880's landlord, we sympathise with the employees who have lost their jobs and the members who made 1880 their second home.' Meanwhile, the staff member said that 1880 was not just any club. 'The culture at 1880 is completely different. We've had events and conversations here that you can't get anywhere else in Singapore.' This was echoed by one of 1880's 2,000-plus members, lawyer Lada Shelkovnikova, who has been an active member since she joined in 2019. 'It was more like a home than an F&B (food and beverage) establishment,' she said. 'I've done an event there myself and had all my client meetings there. Its closure is devastating, and we all feel extremely sorry for the employees because the team is absolutely stellar.' She also had high praise for 1880's programming, which she said was only possible thanks to the staff. 'We've had CEOs, wellness gurus, bestselling authors and C-suites who have come to speak at the club and exchange ideas. No one else can replicate this.'
