Ottawa firefighters rescue baby bird after fall from nest in Orléans
A baby merlin before being returned to his nest. (Ottawa Fire Services/X) Ottawa firefighters were called to help return a young bird of prey to its nest this morning. Ottawa Fire Services public information officer Nick Defazio says crews were called to Esprit Drive at approximately 8:16 a.m. Monday in Orléans after receiving a request for assistance from a wildlife rehabilitator. The young merlin had fallen down a 30 foot tall tree and had been separated from its nest, Defazio says. The wildlife specialist had a ladder with them but it was not tall enough to reach the necessary height. A tower truck from Station 53 was dispatched to the scene. Firefighters set up an aerial apparatus and were able to safely return the merlin to its nest high above to be reunited with its sibling. 'The specialist warned our Firefighters that Mom, who was circling above, may nosedive down at them so they made sure to wear their helmets,' Defazio said. 'Thankfully, no Firefighters were injured in the process.' A licenced bird specialist from Safe Wings Ottawa conducted a health assessment and confirmed the bird had no injuries or health concerns from the fall. 'We'd like to thank the concerned resident who made the initial call seeking help, and the licensed bird specialist from Safe Wings Ottawa, who arrived on scene as our crews were setting up,' Defazio said.

Paddleboarders taken to hospital after water rescue on Ottawa River
An Ottawa Fire Services water rescue boat is seen in this undated image. (Dave Charbonneau/CTV News Ottawa) A pair of paddleboarders were transported to hospital after being pulled from the Deschênes Rapids on the Ottawa River Saturday afternoon. The Ottawa Fire Services say they received a 911 call from a resident at 3:12 p.m. reporting two people on paddleboards halfway down the rapids. On arrival, a water rescue crew found two people in the water. It's unclear if they were wearing personal flotation devices. Both were rescued shortly before 3:25 p.m. An Ottawa paramedics spokesperson says two people were transported by ambulance to hospital in stable condition. It comes just over 24 hours after another paddleboarder was pulled from the same rapids on Friday afternoon. Ottawa Fire Services have been reminding residents to always wear a personal flotation device and to be extra cautious in the river. 'This incident is a reminder of the risks associated with water activities and the importance of always wearing a personal flotation device,' said Ottawa Fire Service public information officer Nick Defazio on Friday. Car fire damages garage at Orléans home
The Ottawa Fire Services says the fire in a garage at home on Boisfranc Circle in Orléans started in a car. (Ottawa Fire Services/X) An evening fire at a home in Orléans started in a vehicle parked in the garage, according to Ottawa Fire Services. Several people called 9-1-1 just before 6 p.m. Tuesday reporting a vehicle on fire inside the attached garage of a single-family home on Boisfranc Circle. Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Nick Defazio said heavy smoke and flames were coming from the garage when firefighters arrived on the scene. 'Crews launched an aggressive attack, quickly advancing a hose line toward the garage to contain the fire,' Defazio said. 'At the same time, a second team entered the home and assisted several occupants with evacuating safely. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.' Firefighters pulled down drywall and insulation in the garage to ensure the fire did not spread, and to fully extinguish any hot spots. The vehicle was removed from the garage using a winch, and high-powered fans were used to ventilate residual smoke from the home. Defazio said the residents of the home will not be displaced following the fire.
