Anthony Daly: Credit Cahill for bringing Tipp further than anyone thought possible
Before the league final, Nicky English wrote a column where he said that now that Tipp had reached a league decider, their aim should be to try and make an All-Ireland semi-final. After Tipp were hammered in that final by Cork, did anyone really believe that was a realistic target? I didn't. And I wasn't the only one. Cork, Clare and Limerick were expected to come out of Munster. After shipping some horrendous beatings in last year's championship, Tipp didn't look capable of making up enough ground in Munster to be able to qualify from the round robin. And now they're 70 minutes away from winning what would be one of the most unexpected All-Irelands ever. This is exclusive subscriber content. Already a subscriber? Dublin hurlers leave us lost for words
It's as well Nicky English wasn't lost for words when he was tasked with summing up the Dublin hurlers' momentous win over Limerick , seeing as he's a columnist of ours. But he probably came close. This, he writes, 'was the best Dublin hurling performance in adversity that I've seen ', their team spirit 'immense' in the course of them 'sensationally dumping the most formidable team of recent times out of the championship'. David Byrne was in Croke Park to see 'the hurling shock of the decade' , but Denis Walsh witnessed no such drama at the Gaelic Grounds where Tipperary eased their way past Galway . 'In Tipp's resurgent summer, this was another sunny day,' he writes. And we now know the shape of football's quarter-finals after Monday morning's draw . It followed a weekend of football that Malachy Clerkin likens to 'Willy Wonka's Everlasting Gobstopper machine' , as only Malachy Clerkin can. ' Kerry (easily) and the Dubs (doggedly) disposed of Cavan and Cork on Saturday, Sunday saw Donegal (in a stroll) and Galway (in a dogfight) get past Louth and Down,' he writes. Seán Moran was in Croke Park to see the dogged Dubs get there in the end against a battling Cork side, while Malachy was in Newry for the 'stone-cold thriller' between Galway and Down . READ MORE In the Tailteann Cup, it'll be Kildare v Limerick in next month's final after they saw off Fermanagh and Wicklow, respectively, Paul Keane reporting on the semi-finals, and we also know the line-up for the quarter-finals in the women's football championship after the weekend's action. Kildare produced the biggest upset by beating Ulster champions Armagh – they meet reigning champions Kerry in the last eight. And in his Tipping Point column, Denis looks at the GAA's latest exercises in self-reflection – they've set up a committee to look at the championship's structures and scheduling, and they've launched a major survey on amateurism among members. Our rugby crew have been exceedingly busy wrapping up the Lions' defeat by Argentina on Friday – there's reaction from Andy Farrell , player ratings , Tom Curry's thoughts on it all (hint: he was 'p***ed off'), five things we learnt from the game, an analysis of Fin Smith's performance and a piece on Finn Russell patching up his differences with Johnny Sexton. In football, there was a bolt from the blue on Sunday with the news that Damien Duff had resigned from his position as Shelbourne manager . He'll leave some hole in the League of Ireland . And we also hear from Carla Ward who is in Colorado preparing her Republic of Ireland side for the first of two daunting friendlies against the United States . In racing, Brian O'Connor looks ahead to next Sunday's bumper nine-race card at the Curragh , the highlight the Irish Derby – is that too lengthy a card for one day? – and he has news on the connections of Ireland's latest Group One star, Cercene , considering an ambitious Oaks attempt at the Curragh next month. TV Watch : It's third plays first in the Premier Division this season, Bohemians hosting Shamrock Rovers (Virgin Media Two, 7.45pm), and at 8pm you have your pick of the weekend's GAA highlights on TG4 and two Club World Cup games on DAZN, Seattle v PSG and Atletico Madrid v Botafogo.

Meath living the dream after Dublin win as Tipperary's nightmare start proves costly against Cork
If you are a devotee of Meath's Gaelic football team, there's a fair chance that you woke up this morning with a smile on your face having dreamt that they beat Dublin for the first time since 2010 . We bring you good news: it actually happened. A dream come true. Tipperary's hurlers had, though, a nightmarish start against Cork when they were down a man before the sliotar was even thrown in. The dismissal, says Nicky English in his analysis of the weekend's action , ended all hope of the game being a tight contest, Denis Walsh noting that it was the correct call, although usually there's ' an unspoken amnesty for stuff that goes on before the ball is thrown in'. Waterford, meanwhile, 'blew the roof off the Munster senior series' with their win over Clare, and Galway and Kilkenny picked up comfortable enough victories over Offaly and Antrim, respectively. Dublin got the better of Wexford, but with the assistance of a highly controversial goal . Another lively weekend for hurling, then, this being the time of year when it is 'placed on an altar for worship'. But, wonders Denis, if it's so good, 'why is it so small?' , why is it not being played in more parts of the country? READ MORE Back to the football championship and Louth wobbled past Kildare to set up a final meeting with Meath ... which the authorities will hope proves somewhat less controversial than their 2010 tussle. Armagh were made to sweat by Tyrone , needing a last-gasp point from Rory Grugan to send them in to their third successive Ulster final. There they will meet Donegal again , Jim McGuinness's men seeing off Down. The rugby weekend? Ireland's women were beaten by Scotland in the final game of their Six Nations campaign, and Munster , Leinster , Ulster and Connacht all lost in the URC. Carnage. Clontarf and UL Bohemian s were beaming, though, after winning their respective All-Ireland League finals at the Aviva Stadium, and Nenagh Ormond were on cloud nine after they became the first Tipperary club to win promotion to Division 1A. In soccer, Ken Early salutes Arne Slot's remarkable debut season at Liverpool , his side wrapping up the Premier League title on Sunday . Caoimhín Kelleher was among those to collect a shiny medal for the feat, Adam Idah and Liam Scales doing the same when Celtic sealed the Scottish Premiership title on what proved to be a weekend of highs and lows for the Irish abroad . Katie McCabe was in the high category – she became the first Irish player to reach a Champions League final after Arsenal's stunning semi-final triumph over Lyon. And in the least surprising news of the weekend, Willie Mullins won a second successive cross-channel championship at Sandown on Saturday, Brian O'Connor telling us that he ended the season there with prize money of €4.1 million. Good going. TV Watch : Snooker's World Championships enters its second week, and there's a mountain of live coverage of it today from 1.0 this afternoon – on BBC 2, BBC Four and TNT Sports 3. At 7.30 this evening, TG4 brings you the Munster Under-20 football final between Cork and Kerry, and half an hour later RTÉ2's Against the Head has the highlights of the rugby weekend. Although, more lowlights to be honest.
