How Far Can the Devils Go with this Projected Lineup?

The NHL has released the New Jersey Devils' projected lineup for the 2025-26 season: Projected Lineup: Ondrej Palat – Jack Hughes – Jesper Bratt Timo Meier – Nico Hischier – Stefan Noesen Arseni Gritsyuk – Dawson Mercer – Connor Brown Advertisement Paul Cotter – Cody Glass – Evgenii Dadonov Brenden Dillon – Dougie Hamilton Luke Hughes – Brett Pesce Jonas Siegenthaler – Simon Nemec Jacob Markstrom Jake Allen The NHL posed the question: How far can the Devils go with this projected lineup? The Devils certainly have the potential to make a deep playoff run; however, their success depends on several key factors. Injuries remain their biggest challenge. Star center Jack Hughes must stay healthy for the entire season if the Devils hope to contend for the Stanley Cup. Hughes has endured two significant shoulder injuries in the last five years, requiring season-ending surgeries in both the 2021-22 and 2024-25 seasons. If Hughes can remain in the lineup this year, the team's Cup chances will increase dramatically. Advertisement Offseason moves have strengthened the roster. The Devils re-signed Jake Allen and Cody Glass, signed Connor Brown and Evgenii Dadonov, and are expected to make one more move before the puck drops on October 9 in Carolina. Their season opener will be a rematch against the team that has eliminated them in each of their last two playoff appearances, the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes are arguably the Devils' second-biggest hurdle, right behind injuries. In 2022-23, Carolina knocked the Devils out in the second round, and in 2024-25, they were eliminated in the first round, both series ending in just five games. The final move will be resigning defenseman Luke Hughes to fill out the Devils' blueline. The blend of veteran leadership and young talent gives the Devils an edge. At the end of last season, Brett Pesce reflected on the team's progress to the media: Advertisement 'I think we are building something here that's pretty special… We have something that most teams don't.' When asked to elaborate, Pesce added: 'Just everything. The guys in the room, the way we blend together, and the personnel.' This strong locker room culture is echoed by Dawson Mercer, who emphasized the team's off-ice chemistry at the end of the season media availability as well: 'Away from the rink, we are a good group of guys,' Mercer said. The Devils aim to push past previous playoff disappointments and make a deeper run this season. Jesper Bratt summed up what needs to change: 'We knew and found the recipe for winning, but we were lacking that consistency.' Switzerland Crushes Denmark, Advances to Gold Medal Game vs. USA

Kevin Fiala and Team Switzerland emphatically punched their ticket to the gold medal game by crushing Denmark 7-0 in the semi-finals. The Swiss find themselves in the finals for the second straight year and continue their quest for Switzerland's first ever gold medal in IIHL World Championship play. "We are like a family. We love each other," confided Fiala to Radio Televison Suisse. "I was MVP last year and things went well for me. But the most important thing is that we win." After joining his compatriots following the end of the LA Kings' playoff run, Fiala has three goals and seven assists in seven games alongside follow Swiss NHL-ers Timo Meier, Nino Niederreiter, and Nico Hischier. Of Fiala's three goals, two have come on the power play. The man advantage has been a particular strong point for the Swiss throughout the tournament, clicking at 34% (11 for 32). Scoring in general hasn't really been a problem for Switzerland either as they lead all tournament teams in shooting percentage at 16% (47 GF on 245 SOG). The Swiss have also benefited from outstanding goaltending throughout the tournament, having already recorded five shutouts heading into the final. Nino Niederreiter opens the scoring for @SwissIceHockey! 🇨🇭🚨 #MensWorlds #IIHF — IIHF (@IIHFHockey) May 24, 2025 However, ff Switzerland plans on winning it all, they will have to do it without Hischier (New Jersey Devils), who sustained an injury against Germany. They will also have their hands full with an American side that made surprisingly quick work of Sweden, 6-2 in the other semi-final. Team USA is currently on a 92-year gold medal drought in this competition and has not made it to the final since 1934. Both teams met earlier in the preliminary round on May 12th, with the Swiss coming out with a convincing 3-0 win over the USA. The Americans have sometimes been hit or miss during the tournament, losing to Switzerland in regulation and needing overtime to beat Norway (6-5) but at the same time beating defending champions Czechia (5-2). The goal medal game is shaping up to be a classic tale of offense versus defense: the US has scored the second highest number of goals in the tournament (38), while the Swiss have given up the fewest (7). In any event, one of these nations has a chance to do something extremely significant on May 25th: the USA can finally end its 92-year gold medal drought or the Swiss can finally add a gold medal to their three silver medals. Both compelling reasons to tune in this game if you can.

Jets Out, Will Nino Niederreiter Join Swiss Team At Worlds?

On Saturday night – early Sunday morning in Europe – the Winnipeg Jets were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs by the Dallas Stars. Almost immediately, Swiss media began speculating about the addition of Jets winger Nino Niederreiter. 'We'll certainly look into it,' Swiss coach Patrick Fischer responded after practise on Sunday, according to Blue Sports. The roster spot has become available to the Swiss because team captain Nico Hischier has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament with a lower-body injury – what the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation is calling a 'muscle injury.' The addition of another high-profile NHLer would fill that hole on the top line. Niederreiter, 32, has played for Switzerland at seven previous IIHF World Championships and won three silver medals, including last year in Czechia where he tallied seven points in 10 games. Niederreiter was the captain of the Swiss team in 2023. Niederreiter had 37 points in 82 regular-season games for Winnipeg this year and six points in 13 playoff games. Kevin Fiala Added To Swiss Roster As was expected, Kevin Fiala has been added to the Swiss national team's roster at the IIHF World Championship. The 28-year-old Los Angeles Kings forward's addition had been delayed due to an unspecified family issue. Switzerland currently sits second in Group B with 13 points in five games. It plays Sunday against Hungary but the earliest Niederreiter could conceivably play is Tuesday against Kazakhstan, which is the team's last in the group stage. Niederreiter would be the second NHLer that the Swiss have added since the start of the tournament. Kevin Fiala of the Los Angeles Kings joined the team for its third game and has two assists in three games. Despite the end of the group stage fast approaching, speculation on adding players eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs continues. Czechia has expressed interest in adding David Kämpf to its roster if the Toronto Maple Leafs lose Game 7 to the Florida Panthers on Sunday. While competing for Switzerland at the IIHF World Championship 2025, Meier shared with Nhl .com, "We know the standard, and we have to raise the standard. Just being in the playoffs, that's not what we're satisfied with. We want to go further. It should be energising and motivating. We want more. Everybody works together. The GM is working hard. All the players want to improve and got to improve." He further added, "Being in the playoffs, you get a taste of it again. For us, we've got to be there. We want to be there every year and go further, not just getting there. It's not enough. We want more." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo On the other hand, the star captain of the Devils, Nico Hischier , shared, "I like it, honestly. We made the playoffs. We made a step in the right direction. Obviously, we got a little unlucky with injuries during the playoffs and right before playoffs, but every offseason is a chance to add and make the team better. We made the playoffs, but I'm biased. I think we have the team to go all the way." Hischier further added, "We obviously could've made a run. You've always got to believe. It's just a step in the right direction, and I like it if the GM says we are going to add some key players that he thinks can help the team improve and be that championship team we hopefully one day will be." Sweden downs Austria, Switzerland tops Denmark at world hockey championship

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Sweden had to rally for a 4-2 win over Austria on Saturday at the world hockey championship. Sweden was last year's bronze medalist. Mika Zibanejad scored twice for the winners. Jonas Brodin and Alexander Wennberg had the other goals. Trailing 2-1, Sweden came back late in the final period. Sweden pulled goalie Samuel Ersson for an extra attacker 2:55 before the final whistle and Brodin tied it at 2-2 with a slap shot from the blue line with 2:19 remaining. Zibanejad netted the winner from the slot 12 seconds later for his second. Wennberg added one more into an empty net. After losing to Finland 2-1 on Friday, Austria produced another decent performance against a title favorite. Zibanejad tied it at 1-1 after Benjamin Baumgarten put the Austrians up in the middle period but Marco Kasper restored a one-goal advantage for Austria 2:26 into the final period. Swiss top Denmark Last year's runner up Switzerland rebounded from a 5-4 overtime defeat to the Czech Republic by beating host Denmark 5-2 in the Danish city of Herning. Captain Nico Hischier and Tyler Moy netted twice and added an assist each, and Damien Riat also had one goal for the Swiss. Denmark got goals from Oscar Moelgaard and Joachim Blichfeld in their second straight defeat. Earlier in Herning, Germany routed another newcomer Hungary 6-1 in Group B after Kazakhstan beat Norway 2-1. Also in Stockholm, Latvia beat France 4-1 in their opening game. ___ AP sports: The Associated Press
