How to Train Your Dragon, a live-action remake of the 2010 animated hit starring Mason Gerard Butler, Mason Thames and Nico Parker, is reportedly coming soon to digital streaming. Written and directed by the 2010 animated version's director Dean DeBlois, How to Train Your Dragon, opened in theaters on June 13. The summary for the film reads, 'On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Thames) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society. 'With the fierce and ambitious Astrid (Parker) and the village's quirky blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost) by his side, Hiccup confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding. As an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup's friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future. Holy Smoking Dragon Fire, How To Train Your Dragon Is Going To Make A Hoard Of Money Opening Weekend

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The How To Train Your Dragon movies have all been successful at the box office, as the lowest grossing title to date made $495.1 million before the end of its time playing on the big screen around the world... but opening weekend numbers have never been particularly huge for the films. That history in mind makes the tracking for the upcoming live-action remake all the more fascinating, as if the feature performs as currently expected, we will see it have the biggest debut in the franchise yet this coming weekend. The new remake starring Mason Thames, Gerard Butler and Nico Parker will officially start its theatrical run this coming Friday, and according to Deadline, prognosticators are expecting a domestic haul between $65-75 million – and that is considered conservative. It's not a total that would put the film in "biggest domestic debut of 2025" territory, as the numbers put up by A Minecraft Movie ($162.8 million) and Lilo & Stitch ($146 million) will be very hard to best, but ticket sales at the higher end of range would mean placing in the Top 5. Even if the live-action How To Train Your Dragon does make just $65 million in its first Friday-to-Sunday, it will still be the best start any title in the franchise has gotten in the United States and Canada. When it premiered in March 2010, the original animated film brought in $43.7 million; How To Train Your Dragon 2 earned $49.5 million when it opened in June 2014, and How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World launched with $55 million in February 2019. The new How To Train Your Dragon has mostly earned praise from critics, but it has also been criticized for its extreme faithfulness to the animated movie and inability to present an answer to the question, "Why did this need to be remade?" In regards to the latter point, however, young audiences who have not seen the animated version aren't going to be making that comparison, and they are the key demographic for the film. Outside of the domestic region, How To Train Your Dragon is also expected to play extremely well overseas, which is expected as all of the movies in the animated trilogy made more money from foreign markets than at home. Estimates for the new 2025 movie suggest it will have between $175-185 million in the bank before the end of the day on Sunday. That's a solid start for a film that cost a reported $150 million (without factoring publicity and marketing costs). The biggest competition that How To Train Your Dragon will face in cinemas is Lilo & Stitch, which remained at #1 in the Top 10 for the third straight weekend. Be sure to head back here to CinemaBlend on Sunday for my box office column and to learn how the performance of one live-action remake impacts the other.

Gerard Butler looks in good spirits as he enjoys a bike ride with girlfriend Morgan Brown in NYC

Gerard Butler looked in good spirits as he went for a bike ride with his girlfriend Morgan Brown in New York City on Thursday. The 300 actor, 55, cut a casual figure in a light brown t-shirt, adidas trainers and a baseball cap, as he cruised around in the sunshine. Morgan, 54, also opted for neutral tones, twinning her beige short-sleeved shirt with a matching mini-skirt and tasseled cowboy boots. The Los Angeles-based real-estate investor nodded to her home county with a Le Café De La Plage cap, merch from the iconic Malibu brunch hotspot. The couple confirmed they were officially back together hitting the How To Train Your Dragon red carpet as a duo in LA. Gerard Butler looked in good spirits as he went for a bike ride with his girlfriend Morgan Brown in New York City on Thursday The lovebirds were on and off for a few years, having first got together more than a decade ago in 2014. Gerard was recently spotted posing with actress Nico Parker while attending day three of CinemaCon 2025 in Las Vegas on Wednesday. Nico, who is the daughter of Emmy winner Thandiwe Newton and director Ol Parker - paused for snaps alongside The Phantom Of The Opera actor, 55, at a special screening of How To Train Your Dragon at the event. The upcoming film is a live-action adaptation of the 2010 animated movie and is set to hit theaters later this year on June 13. Nico put on a stylish display wearing a white dress which was layered with a dazzling silver jacket. She slipped into a pair of closed-toed, black heels and allowed her brunette locks to flow down in light waves past her shoulders. Nico and Gerard were also joined by director Dean DeBlois as they addressed the crowd inside a theater at Caesar's Palace. Other stars that have been cast in the remake include Mason Thames, Nick Frost, Julian Dennison and Gabriel Howell. The premise is: 'As an ancient threat endangers both Vikings and dragons alike on the isle of Berk, the friendship between Hiccup, an inventive Viking, and Toothless, a Night Fury dragon, becomes the key to both species forging a new future together,' per IMDB. In January, Gerard revealed the reason why shooting the upcoming action thriller, Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera, was a 'nightmare.' He opened up about an injury he suffered shortly before filming began for the sequel. The movie - which also stars O'Shea Jackson Jr. and Evin Ahmad - hit theatres on Friday, January 10. While recently talking to Entertainment Weekly, 'This was a weird time for me at the beginning of this movie because I'd been through a pretty intense surgery.' 'And then I tore my ACL fully about a month later and then started this movie,' Butler continued. 'So I was not in the best shape, and it was a pretty physical movie, and I didn't have a chance to get the surgery on my ACL, so I made this movie with a freshly torn ACL, and it was pretty rough. 'I wanted to put a "but" in to make it sound positive, but it wasn't positive. It was a nightmare!' Gerard expressed, before humorously adding, 'And I was a whiny little b***h!'

Dakota Johnson's Materialists BOMBS at box office despite starry cast featuring Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans

How To Train Your Dragon breathed some fire into the summer box office soaring easily to the top spot. The first live-action reimagining of the 2010 animated hit starring Mason Thames, Nico Parker and Gerard Butler, met expectations, pulling in nearly $84 million in ticket sales its first weekend in theaters. The film was a global hit as well, pulling in some $114.1 million from 81 markets, according to The Numbers for a global total of $197.8 million. In North America, HTTYD was the eighth-best opening of all time for Father's Day weekend and the fourth-biggest opening of the year to date. Among those attending over the weekend were Thames and Butler, who shared a video on social media celebrating the film. 'It was the first time we saw it in Imax,' Butler said, 'Yeah, it was insane,' Thames agreed. 'And we brought a bunch of friends,' Butler continued, showing a cheering crowd, joking, 'I didn't have to pay them that much money.' Then, pointing to his young co-star who plays Hiccup, the MTV Movie Award winner said, 'and this kid's going to be the biggest star of all, Mason. How good is he?.' Writing next to the post the Scottish actor said, 'Couldn't be more proud to call him my Viking son. As you can see, this sentiment is backed up by all the troops that went into battle with us last night. Go see #HowToTrainYourDragon and watch this kid soar. He's gonna break your heart in the best way.' The film received excellent reviews, including an A from CinemaScore, and a 98-percent rating from the audiences at Rotten Tomatoes. Last week's number one, the live-action Lilo & Stitch, dropped to distant second place after three weeks at the top. The Disney film starring Maia Kealoha, as Lilo along with Courtney B. Vance and Tia Carrere, earned $15 million domestically over the weekend, adding to its worldwide total of $366,371,809. Debuting in third place was the romantic comedy Materialists, starring Dakota Johnson as a matchmaker in the enviable position of having to choose between leading men Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. The film, written and directed by Celine Song, received a warm 87-percent rating from the critics at Rotten Tomatoes and audiences responded with a heartfelt $12 million at the box office. Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning dropped to fourth place, earning $10.3 million. The action-adventure starring Tom Cruise and his band of wily agents has not fared as well as other films in the popular franchise, but after a disappointing opening weekend in which it was bested by Lilo & Stitch, Final Reckoning has still managed to capture more than $467 million globally. Rounding out the top five was Ana De Armas in From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. The thriller focusing on a trained Russian assassin seeking revenge after her father's death, earned $9.4 million over the weekend.

‘Dragon' Projected To Top ‘28 Years Later,' ‘Elio' At Weekend Box Office

Mason Thames and Nico Parker in "How to Train Your Dragon." Elio and 28 Years Later appear to be no match for How to Train Your Dragon, which is projected to keep its No. 1 spot at this weekend's box office. DreamWorks and Universal Pictures' live-action version of the 2010 animated hit of the same name, How to Train Your Dragon opened with $84.6 million in ticket sales from 4,356 North American theaters in its opening frame last weekend. The film's massive opening tally was more than enough to bump Disney's live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch from the top spot at the box office after three weeks. Heading into its second weekend at the box office, How to Train Your Dragon is projected by Deadline to earn $40 million-plus Friday through Sunday. Deadline also forecasts a $28 million to $30 million opening for Sony Pictures Entertainment's horror thriller 28 Years Later and a $20 million-plus opening for Disney-Pixar's animated sci-fi adventure Elio. The third film in director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland's zombie movie series, 28 Years Later is opening in 3,300 theaters domestically, while Elio will be playing in 3,750 North American theaters. Elio (voice of Yonas Kibreab) and Glordon (voice of Remy Edgerly) in a scene from "Elio." The opening weekend projection of a $20 million-plus opening for Elio is not good news for Disney-Pixar. In a long-range tracking report by Box Office Pro on May 30, Elio was forecasted by the box office tracker to have an opening weekend in the $35 million to $45 million range. Box Office Pro's long-range tracking estimate for 28 Years Later, meanwhile, was for a $30 million to $40 million opening. Starring Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O'Connell and Emma Laird, 28 Years Later had a production budget of $60 million before prints and advertising, Deadline reported. Elio, meanwhile, cost $150 million to produce before P&A, the trade publication noted. The movie marketplace will only get more crowded next week when Brad Pitt's Formula 1 race car thriller F1: The Movie opens, as well as the Blumhouse horror sequel M3GAN 2.0, starring Allison Williams. After that, the Jurassic World reboot Jurassic World Rebirth, starring Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey, opens on July 2 to kick off the July 4 holiday moviegoing weekend.
