Habagat, recent rains bring floods, affect fishers and farmers across PH

Several areas across the Philippines were impacted by the continuous rains over the weekend due to the southwest monsoon or Habagat and Tropical Cyclone Danas, bringing down prices of agricultural goods in northern Luzon, and causing floods in Mindanao. Farmers in Benguet have been forced to harvest their goods earlier due to the rains, with market prices down as sellers are offering goods such as cabbage at giveaway prices instead of throwing them out. 'Kahapon talaga 'yung medyo may kalakihan. Dose ang bigay namin. Kapag tag-ulan kasi, medyo mabilis na ano 'yung mga gulay, na ma-harvest kasi masisira,' Gloria Calpito, a seller at the La Trinidad Trading Post, said in a report by Nico Waje on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday. (Yesterday was really big. We sold at P12. During the rainy season, vegetables are harvested immediately because they go bad.) Fisherfolk in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte are also feeling the effects of the bad weather conditions, as they have been forced to skip fishing activities and remain on the ground for the past few days due to the waves. According to Ilocos Norte Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) representative Marcell Tabije, authorities are now coordinating to ensure that fisherfolk stay on land for the meantime. 'Pinaigting natin 'yung pagbabantay at pag-info dissemination sa mga fisherfolk natin na huwag munang pumalaot habang malakas 'yung alon,' he said in a separate report by Darlene Cay. (We have intensified our surveillance and our info dissemination to the fisherfolk not to go at sea while the waves are strong.) Streets in Mindanao, particularly in the Sarangani Province, were also flooded by the continuous rains, as irrigation canals spilled over, and floodwaters entered residences in Barangay Pangyan in Glan, and a chapel in Barangay Cross. A river connected to the sea in Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental was also reported to have spilled over, forcing fishers and residents of the area to work hand in hand to bring boats back to the shore on Sunday morning. The state weather bureau PAGASA expects tropical cyclone Danas, formerly named Bising, and the Habagat to continue to bring rains across the country. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA Integrated News

Thunderstorms cause floods in parts of PH

Several parts of the country experienced flooding due to inclement weather caused by localized thunderstorms. In a ''24 Oras Weekend'' report by Jamie Santos, a motorist took footage of vehicles forced to cross the gutter-deep floods in some parts of Cainta, Rizal on Saturday morning. The flood was almost ankle deep in Montalban, Rizal. Inclement weather also caused heavy traffic on E. Rodriguez Avenue, Sumulong Memorial Circle Road in Antipolo, Ortigas Avenue Extension, and Taytay Diversion Road. Meanwhile, waters entered the homes of residents in Barangay Malanday, Marikina, while some of them removed blockage in their sewer, including trash, cement and dried leaves. They called on local authorities to take action regarding fast-rising floods despite little rainfall. In a separate ''24 Oras Weekend'' report by Nico Waje, a school was hit by flood in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, due to localized thunderstorms. Students and teachers worked together to remove water from classrooms. According to the school administration, flooding was caused by both rain and the construction of the drainage system. Thunderstorms also occurred in parts of Metro Manila on Saturday. Most parts of the country will continue to experience rains on Sunday because of the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), PAGASA said in its Saturday afternoon forecast. Ilocos Region, Zambales, and Bataan will have occasional rains, while Metro Manila, Mindanao, Cordillera Administrative Region, the rest of Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, and Western Visayas will see cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms. Bicol Region and the rest of Visayas will expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms. —Jamil Santos/VBL, GMA Integrated News

Cop, suspect killed in QC shootout

A police officer and a suspect were killed during a shootout in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City on early Monday morning. According to Nico Waje's 'State of the Nation' report, Patrolman Harwin Curtney Bagga and his partner were responding to a robbery incident along Katipunan Street when the suspect managed to surprise and shot at them. Despite being mortally wounded, Bagga and his partner returned fire, fatally hitting the suspect. Bagga was brought to the hospital but later passed away. The bullet in his arm went through his chest. Authorities have yet to identify the suspect. The robbery victim, a food cart owner and a bystander were also shot. The National Capital Region Police Office said the responding police officers actually encountered the suspect who told them the direction of the supposed robber. When the cops turned away, the suspect pulled out his gun and fired at them. The Philippine National Police is preparing a recognition to be awarded to the slain cop. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News

DOH aims zero dengue-related deaths by 2030

The Department of Health (DOH) is looking into multiple ways to address the rising dengue cases in the country, as it aims for zero dengue-related deaths by 2030. In Nico Waje's Wednesday report on 'Saksi,' the DOH said it is assessing the Wolbachia method used in Jakarta, Indonesia, to control mosquito breeding. The method uses bacteria to control the number of mosquitoes. According to Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa, dengue cases will continue to rise unless mosquito breeding grounds are controlled. The number of dengue cases rose to 59% from January to June 2025. This is equivalent to 23,000 reported dengue cases in the country, of which 470 have died. Calabarzon logged the most number of dengue cases, with 19,500 infections and 62 deaths. The DOH is also assessing the usage of the QDenga dengue vaccine, which is being utilized in 40 countries. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is still evaluating the vaccine. Herbosa said the pharmaceutical company still needs to submit its risk management plan and the reason why the vaccine was pulled out from other FDA markets, like the United States. DOH plans to use the vaccine in the hospital and not for mass-based immunization. The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) also believed that vaccination is the key to achieving zero dengue-related deaths. Unlike Dengvaxia, which was cloned out of yellow fever, PMA president Hector Santos said QDenga is better since it was taken from previous dengue cases. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News

Influencer to file complaint after photo of her baby gets used in online child pornography

An influencer will file a complaint before the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) after a photo of her baby was used to generate online child pornography. As seen in Nico Waje's report on "24 Oras Weekend," Sunday, influencer and CEO Queen Hera cried after learning about what happened to the picture of her daughter, Baby Diamond. The image was being sold for P1,500 or USD$26. Queen Hera said an IT professional is helping her trace who is behind it. The National Privacy Commission (NPC) said online child pornography cases is on the rise due to artifical intelligence (AI). "Maaaring gamitin ito para gawan ng masama or iedit yung picture at gamitin sa isang video na hindi kaaya aya," said Roren Marie Chin, Public Information and Assistance Division Chief of NPC. "Ang amin lang paalala ay palaging maging maingat at mapanuri sa pinopost natin. I-set natin 'yung ating Facebook, social media account sa private na setting kung saan 'yung mga kakilala natin 'yung mga nakaka-access." Queen Hera, meanwhile, vowed to seek justice for her daughter. "Anak, mapapanood mo 'to one day, so I feel so sorry kasi nangyari sa 'yo 'to. Iniisip ko palang na until now, andun pa rin 'yung pictures mo at wala ako magawa para mapatanggal 'yun. I'm so sorry, anak." —MGP, GMA Integrated News
