Over 41,000 families in Calumpit affected by floods

More than 41,000 families in Calumpit, Bulacan are affected by the floods caused by the nonstop rains brought by the southwest monsoon or habagat and Tropical Storm Emong. According to Nico Waje's report in 'Saksi' on Wednesday, residents find ways to perform their day-to-day activities despite the situation. In Barangay Calizon, residents brave the floods just to get free sacks of rice and other aid from the local government. 'Medyo hirap ngayon dahil maraming hindi nakakapaghanap-buhay, kaya medyo hirap ang Barangay Calizon,' said Councilor Jonjon Gonzales. But there are some who cannot afford to be absent in their work and they wade through flooded streets. 'Ngayon ang pasok ko ay alas otso. Kailangan maaga akong makaalis para may masakyan pa po,' said factory worker Emmanuel Salonga. (Today I have work at eight. I need to leave early so I can catch a ride.) The town of Calumpit does not easily get flooded even when the Pampanga River is on high tide. But the water level rises when both the Ipo and Bustos dams release water, the report said. The flood is also an inconvenience to those who are in need of medical treatment such as Monico Esponilla, who has to bring his wife to her sibling's house for an easier travel so she can have dialysis treatment. 'Yung misis ko dina-dialysis tatlong beses sa isang linggo. Kaya nilipat ko rito kasi bukas, alas kwatro y medya, punta kami sa ospital,' he said. (My wife is on dialysis three times a week. So I moved her here because tomorrow, at four-thirty, we're going to the hospital.) The Calumpit government is now asking the national government to help them address the flooding in the town. 'Dito po sa amin sa pamahalaang bayan ng Calumpit, sa lokal, ang magagawa po namin is magkaroon po kami ng pumping station. Pero kailangan namin ng tulong ng nation, especially ng DPWH, para makulong ang kailogan namin. Kasi kapag nakulong ang kailogan namin, pwede tayo maglagay ng pumping stations,' said Mayor Lem Faustino. (Here in the Calumpit municipal government, locally, all we can do is have a pumping station. But we need the help of the nation, especially the DPWH, to contain our water from the river. Because when the water from our river is contained, we can put up pumping stations.) — Vince Angelo Ferreras/BAP, GMA Integrated News

5 times Nico Waje made typhoon coverage a little less gloomy

Nico Waje of GMA Integrated News has been going viral for his typhoons Crising and Dante videos on TikTok. Posting updates from town situations around the Philippines, Nico's comment section is filled with netizens calling him 'love,' 'babe,' 'the king of updates,' and the 'pambansang boyfriend.' They've also been reminding him to take extra care. Covering typhoons and disasters is never an easy thing — both for the news team delivering the information and for the audiences watching them. So thank heavens for someone like Nico Waje who is able to make delivering the news seem a little less difficult, and receiving the news a little less of a gloomy experience. Here are five of Nico's best moments: 1. From Brgy. Sapang Bayan, Calumpit, Bulacan Nico updated netizens about the situation in the Brgy. Sapang Bayan in Calumpit, Bulacan as he waded through a flooded area, jacket zipped up and umbrella in tow. While his TikTok video showed homes and townspeople in knee-high floods, netizens reminded him to take care. 'Gusto ko talaga yung nag uupdate sakin eh, sige love ingat ka,' a netizen said. 2. From Taft Avenue corner United Nations, Manila Nico's situationer between Taft Avenue and United Nations in Manila is quite the popular video as he explained how clogged drainage systems resulted in floods. As he gave updates on how the local government unit of Manila was in the area to clean out the gutters, one netizen hilariously said, 'Nico, ako naman nasa Antipolo. Baka gusto mo din mag-report from here.' 3. From Brgy. Saplad David, Macabebe, Pampanga On GMA News' TikTok page Monday, Nico reported from a bangka in the already-flooded Brgy. Saplad David, Macabebe, Pampanga. Netizens couldn't help but swoon over the journalist, who was drenched wet, thanking him for updates and once again telling him to take care. A netizen even called Nico the Pambansang BF. 4. Live reports Nico also posts his live reports on '24 Oras" like his situation report from Macabebe, Pampanga, for which fans thanked their 'babe.' 'Ingat guys! Masama ang panahon hanggang Thursday,' Nico said in his TikTok caption. 5. Offcam outfit checks @nicowaje Before diving into the flood outfit check????????Thanks for the rain gear GMA Integrated News ????? ? original sound - Nico Waje Nico gave a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes during a typhoon coverage with fit check video. A barefooted Nico was seen dressing up in waterproof pants and GMA Integrated News' waterproof jacket. To top it all off, he also wore a waterproof jumper and rainboots. With another filled comments section, Nico told supporters, 'Guys! I'm trying to read all your comments. Please know that I appreciate you all! Mag-ingat please! Lab u!' In its early Wednesday bulletin, PAGASA said Tropical Depression Dante is maintaining its strength as it moves northwestward over the Philippine Sea. Habagat, recent rains bring floods, affect fishers and farmers across PH

Several areas across the Philippines were impacted by the continuous rains over the weekend due to the southwest monsoon or Habagat and Tropical Cyclone Danas, bringing down prices of agricultural goods in northern Luzon, and causing floods in Mindanao. Farmers in Benguet have been forced to harvest their goods earlier due to the rains, with market prices down as sellers are offering goods such as cabbage at giveaway prices instead of throwing them out. 'Kahapon talaga 'yung medyo may kalakihan. Dose ang bigay namin. Kapag tag-ulan kasi, medyo mabilis na ano 'yung mga gulay, na ma-harvest kasi masisira,' Gloria Calpito, a seller at the La Trinidad Trading Post, said in a report by Nico Waje on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday. (Yesterday was really big. We sold at P12. During the rainy season, vegetables are harvested immediately because they go bad.) Fisherfolk in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte are also feeling the effects of the bad weather conditions, as they have been forced to skip fishing activities and remain on the ground for the past few days due to the waves. According to Ilocos Norte Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) representative Marcell Tabije, authorities are now coordinating to ensure that fisherfolk stay on land for the meantime. 'Pinaigting natin 'yung pagbabantay at pag-info dissemination sa mga fisherfolk natin na huwag munang pumalaot habang malakas 'yung alon,' he said in a separate report by Darlene Cay. (We have intensified our surveillance and our info dissemination to the fisherfolk not to go at sea while the waves are strong.) Streets in Mindanao, particularly in the Sarangani Province, were also flooded by the continuous rains, as irrigation canals spilled over, and floodwaters entered residences in Barangay Pangyan in Glan, and a chapel in Barangay Cross. A river connected to the sea in Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental was also reported to have spilled over, forcing fishers and residents of the area to work hand in hand to bring boats back to the shore on Sunday morning. The state weather bureau PAGASA expects tropical cyclone Danas, formerly named Bising, and the Habagat to continue to bring rains across the country. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA Integrated News

Thunderstorms cause floods in parts of PH

Several parts of the country experienced flooding due to inclement weather caused by localized thunderstorms. In a ''24 Oras Weekend'' report by Jamie Santos, a motorist took footage of vehicles forced to cross the gutter-deep floods in some parts of Cainta, Rizal on Saturday morning. The flood was almost ankle deep in Montalban, Rizal. Inclement weather also caused heavy traffic on E. Rodriguez Avenue, Sumulong Memorial Circle Road in Antipolo, Ortigas Avenue Extension, and Taytay Diversion Road. Meanwhile, waters entered the homes of residents in Barangay Malanday, Marikina, while some of them removed blockage in their sewer, including trash, cement and dried leaves. They called on local authorities to take action regarding fast-rising floods despite little rainfall. In a separate ''24 Oras Weekend'' report by Nico Waje, a school was hit by flood in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, due to localized thunderstorms. Students and teachers worked together to remove water from classrooms. According to the school administration, flooding was caused by both rain and the construction of the drainage system. Thunderstorms also occurred in parts of Metro Manila on Saturday. Most parts of the country will continue to experience rains on Sunday because of the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), PAGASA said in its Saturday afternoon forecast. Ilocos Region, Zambales, and Bataan will have occasional rains, while Metro Manila, Mindanao, Cordillera Administrative Region, the rest of Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, and Western Visayas will see cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms. Bicol Region and the rest of Visayas will expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms. —Jamil Santos/VBL, GMA Integrated News
