Leafs fans, circle this January date for Mitch Marner's first game back in Toronto since trade

Maple Leafs fans will have to wait a few months after the NHL season starts for a chance to see their former hometown hero in different colours at Scotiabank Arena. The NHL released its full schedule Wednesday, which showed that Mitch Marner and his Vegas Golden Knights will make their first trip to Toronto on Jan. 23. It comes a week after the Knights host the Leafs in Las Vegas on Jan. 15. After spending nearly 10 years in Toronto, a team that drafted him fourth overall in 2015, the 28-year-old signed an eight-year, $96 million contract to join the Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade deal just before this summer's free agency. The Leafs received forward Nicolas Roy in that trade. The Leafs' home opener will be against archrivals Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 8. Other dates of note from next season include Jan. 6, when they will host the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. Florida will be on a three-peat quest this season, something that hasn't been done since the New York Islanders in 1982. Connor McDavid and his Edmonton Oilers will visit Toronto on Dec. 13. The league's 32 teams will combine to play 1,312 games between Oct. 7 and April 16 with the playoffs to run from the following weekend through much of June. An 84-game season starts in 2026-27 resulting in 1,344 games — the most in NHL history. Alex Ovechkin begins his 21st season on Oct. 8 when he and the Washington Capitals host Boston. Ovechkin is at 897 career goals after breaking Wayne Gretzky's record and can add to his total at age 40. For the first time in more than a decade, the league is pausing in the winter to send players to the Olympics. The Milan break runs from Feb. 6-24, with play resuming Feb. 25. Mitch Marner on Maple Leafs exit: 'Leaving isn't easy'

Mitch Marner issued an emotional farewell to Toronto on Tuesday, the same day his hometown Maple Leafs officially confirmed he had been traded to the Vegas Golden Knights. "Leaving isn't easy. This city is where I grew up, where I fell in love with hockey, and where I've had the incredible honour of living out my childhood dream," he wrote in an Instagram post. "Wearing the Maple Leaf on my chest wasn't just about playing for a team, it was about representing my home." The Maple Leafs acquired forward Nicolas Roy in exchange for Marner, who signed an eight-year, $96 million contract with Toronto as part of the trade before heading to Vegas. Marner, 28, was seen as the No. 1 player in the upcoming unrestricted free agent class. He has spent his entire nine-year NHL career in Toronto, which selected him fourth overall in the 2015 draft. He said he leaves Toronto with unfulfilled goals. "When I was drafted, all I wanted was to help bring a Stanley Cup to Toronto," he said. "That was always the goal, and I came up short. I know how much this team means to this city, and I know the expectations that came with wearing this jersey. I gave everything I had, but in the end, it wasn't enough. That's hard to admit, because I wanted it so badly for all of us." He has career totals of 221 goals and 520 assists (741 points) in 657 games and is coming off a career year that saw him total personal bests of 75 assists and 102 points in 81 games. The 28-year-old Roy had 15 goals and 16 assists in 71 games last season. Over the course of his eight-year career with the Carolina Hurricanes and Golden Knights, he has accrued 68 goals and 98 assists in 369 games. The Leafs also confirmed the re-signing of fellow forward Matthew Knies on Tuesday. They kept Knies from entering free agency by signing him to a six-year contract extension worth $46.5 million. Knies, 22, was due to become a restricted free agent on Tuesday. The new deal has an average annual value of $7.75 million. Knies has played two full seasons with Toronto, posting career highs in 2024-25 with 58 points (29 goals, 29 assists), 152 shots on goal, 41 blocks and 182 hits in 78 regular-season games. For his career, Knies has 44 goals, 50 assists, 73 blocks and 353 hits in 161 games since Toronto selected him in the second round of the 2021 NHL Draft.

Marner reveals factors for leaving Maple Leafs, signing with Vegas

Mitch Marner on Tuesday night shed some light on his desire to play for the Vegas Golden Knights. Article content In his first news conference as a member of the Western Conference club and clad in his new No. 93 Golden Knights sweater, Marner made it clear Vegas was his first choice. Article content Article content 'We thought about going to free agency, but this is the place we want to be,' Marner said, referring to himself and his wife, Stephanie. 'We don't want to lose that opportunity, and we wanted to join this hockey team.' Article content Marner was joined by his wife, his baby son Miles, and his parents Paul and Bonnie for his first official day with the Golden Knights. In a sign-and-trade, Marner got an eight-year, $96-million US contract carrying an average annual value of $12 million US. Article content The trade, which involved centre Nicolas Roy going to Toronto, officially was announced on Tuesday morning. Article content Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon, who spoke at the podium in Vegas before Marner, said the teams agreed to a trade on Friday night during the first round of the National Hockey League draft. Article content 'We made a trade with Toronto where we traded Nic Roy and for them to sign and trade Marner to Vegas, if we could come to an agreement with his representative (Darren Ferris),' McCrimmon said. 'We were able to do that over the course of a few days. It took a couple of days for the NHL to process the contract and then there were some salary-cap logistics between Toronto and ourselves that delayed the announcement of it a little bit. Article content 'We wanted to do a sign-and-trade with Toronto so we could get the eighth year on the contract. For us, the eighth year really helped us in terms of what the AAV might be.' Article content Had the Golden Knights got Marner on seven years, to get to a total of $96 million, the AAV would have been $13.7 million. Article content 'That impacts our ability to take the player onto our team,' McCrimmon said. Article content The interest in Marner from McCrimmon and Vegas isn't new. The team has liked the 28-year-old for a while and tried to acquire Marner at the trade deadline in March in a three-team deal that involved the Carolina Hurricanes and would have brought Mikko Rantanen to Toronto. Instead, Rantanen was traded to Dallas by Carolina.

Fixing the top-six forwards via trade is next Treliving goal for post-Marner Leafs

'′Never a fun day. Article content That's how Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving described the departure of a player of the stature of Mitch Marner, who officially became a member of the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday morning in a sign-and-trade. Article content 'I would agree that Mitch is going to go down as one of the great Leafs,' Treliving said on Tuesday afternoon after he had a quiet day on the free-agent front. 'The statistics (Marner is fifth in franchise scoring) prove it. Article content 'Ultimately, the player has a choice … certainly we approached Mitch to engage him on a contract. As is his right, Mitch and his representative (Darren Ferris) wanted to wait until the year was done, and as it became clearer and clearer to us that potential may not be there, we tried to look at alternatives. Article content 'As was his right and was negotiated, Mitch has a full no-move, so he controlled the process. I don't know if I'm frustrated (with the way the Marner saga ended). He had the right to control what he wanted to control.' Article content Treliving wouldn't discuss contract negotiations, refusing to say if the Leafs offered more than the $12 million average annual value (for eight years) that Marner got. And he would not address speculation that the Leafs would have asked the NHL to investigate the Golden Knights for tampering had Vegas signed Marner on the open market. Article content For Treliving, getting veteran centre Nicolas Roy in return from the Golden Knights was crucial. 'He was an important player for them,' Treliving said. 'He's a guy that can match up. One thing he probably doesn't get enough credit for is there's some sneaky skill with him, he has good hands. He can play in tight, kill penalties. Gives you a right-shot option on the faceoff circle. He can play against good players can play with good players. Article content 'There's versatility to the player. That's a broad overview, but we think it can be a real important player for us. Article content 'In a situation where a player (potentially) was walking away this morning for nothing, we were able to recoup a player that fits a need for us. (And) he has a Stanley Cup ring to his name.' Article content As free agency opened on Canada Day, Treliving netted just one player, forward Michael Pezzetta. The Toronto native will hit anything that moves from his spot on the fourth line, provided, of course, he is in the lineup. Article content The new Leafs, as of now, include Roy, Pezzetta and winger Matias Maccelli. Even taking into account the trading of Marner, it doesn't add up to the DNA change that Treliving is seeking. Article content Treliving has some money in the bank — approximately $5 million under the salary cap — and acknowledged that the free-agent market is looking 'thinner and thinner.'
