City sued for discrimination by ex-Civilian Complaint Review Board investigator

He was hired to be an investigator — but was allegedly treated like a pack mule. An administrator for the NYC Civilian Complaint Review Board was forced to perform manual labor at his office job, and eventuallu quit to escape 'grotesque bigotry and hostility' from his supervisors, he said in a lawsuit. Nigerian-born Ademola Bello was the only desk worker at the CCRB's Division of Financial and Strategic Management ever asked by his bosses 'to haul furniture, office supplies, boxes of paper and filing cabinets,' he claimed in court papers. 4 Ademola Bello is a graduate of Columbia University's Journalism School. Helayne Seidman Winnie Chen, the CCRB's director of budget and operations, and Jeanine Marie, the agency's deputy executive director, treated Bello, 52, like 'property' and 'chattel labor,' which left him 'emotionally battered and psychologically depleted,' the Nigerian native said in the July 16 legal filing. Bello, who started working for the CCRB in September 2023 as a civilian investigator and transitioned to Chen's department that December, where the Columbia Journalism School grad — alleged he was singled out for 'strenuous manual labor' due to his 'African identity.' 'They tried to cover up all these things, it was just so bad,' Bello told The Post this week. 'And it was because of my nationality.' 4 Bello will soon need surgery on his knee, which he hurt lifting heavy boxes. Helayne Seidman He was repeatedly asked to do tasks 'utterly incongruous with his administrative duties and physical capacity,' like moving furniture, and in early 2025, he sustained an 'acute knee injury' lifting a large box, according to the lawsuit. Even though the city confirmed his injury was work related, Chen allegedly urged him to 'rub [his knee with] her 'Chinese oil,' or face consequences' and pushed him to drop a worker's compensation claim. When he refused Chen's 'nontraditional herbal treatment…her abuse escalated,' he said in court papers. 4 The offices of the Civilian Complaint Review Board. Google Maps Bello was the only person in the office who wasn't allowed to eat at his desk and his requests for pay raises or remote work privileges were denied, unlike his 'non-African, less qualified' colleagues, he alleged. And he was also asked to fill-in at the reception desk, often coming into the office before sunrise and not leaving until well after 5 p.m., he said in the legal filing, which also alleges he was never paid for 40 hours a week, despite working twice as many hours. 4 Bello worked under Winnie Chen, who is a party to the civil suit. Winnie Chen/ Linkedin 'I was told I was working for free and there was nothing I could do,' said Bello. 'When he questioned this exploitation' during a discussion with Marie, 'the response was unambiguous: 'You can resign,'' he said in the litigation. He would never be able to meet Marie's expectations because Bello 'was not 'white,'' Marie said, according to the lawsuit. Bello's lawyer, Bennitta Joseph of Joseph and Norinsberg, said he'll be having knee surgery next month. 'At the Civilian Complaint Review Board — the agency sworn to root out abuse — an African immigrant was treated like a slave,' Joseph said. 'They exploited him for manual labor, denied him dignity, and discarded his humanity while hiding behind the language of justice. This wasn't just hypocrisy—it was modern-day servitude, enforced by bureaucrats drunk on power and bigotry, and for this they must be held accountable.' The CCRB did not return calls seeking comment.

Liverpool: Rio Ngumoha sees Mohamed Salah as a role model

Rio Ngumoha and Mohamed Salah Originally from Nigeria, young English talent Rio Ngumoha recently spoke about his first steps with Liverpool's senior team. He didn't hesitate to mention the star Mohamed Salah as a true role model. Rio Ngumoha has been training with Liverpool's first team for just a few days, but the Nigerian-born prodigy already made an impression during a friendly against Preston North End. The young Nigerian is currently living his childhood dream. "This experience is truly indescribable. Training with the best team in the world, even at such a young age, is every kid's dream. You learn from the players you train with and really get to measure yourself against them. It's incredible." Ngumoha told the English club's website. He went on to mention that Egyptian star Mo Salah is one of his idols. "Mohamed Salah was, of course, one of my role models growing up, so it's really great to learn from him. Everyone is very professional, and you can see why they're at the top. They're always thinking about football, about recovery, about little details like healthy eating. So there's a lot we can learn from them." he said.

This might just be the most irreverent collaboration of 2025.

Some collaborations just make sense. When two brands like Mowalola and Marc Jacobs come together, it feels less like a business move and more like a match made in chaotic, cool-girl heaven. That's exactly what we're getting with Marc Jacobs by Mowa, a limited-edition capsule that merges Marc's maximalist nostalgia with Mowalola Ogunlesi's much-hyped unruliness. Fresh off the back of collabs with Miss Sixty, THE SKATEROOM and Ksubi, the Nigerian-born, London-raised designer is now taking on what may be her most headline-worthy project yet. Available now on the drop features a mashup of both brands' visual signatures. Think: razor-sharp baby tees, attitude-packed jewellery, glossy accessories, and reimagined icons from the Marc Jacobs archive. The collab was first teased on Instagram, where Mowalola posted campaign imagery alongside underground icons Rico Nasty and Deto Black. Together, they model mini skirts, moon-shaped bags, and other punky accessories stamped with a new 'Marcjacobs by Mowa' logo that feels like the early 2000s got a reboot with a bad attitude. The standout piece? An XL Circle bag, blown up to near-suitcase proportions and studded with enough hardware to make even a minimalist pause and reconsider their aesthetic. It's exactly what fans of both brands didn't know they needed. Mowalola, who's long been revered for her rebellious takes on youth culture, identity, and gender, describes the collection as her own interpretation of New York City energy (which, in other words, is shorthand for Marc Jacobs). It's raw and a little unhinged in the best way. As a designer, she continues to walk the line between fashion and provocation, making it impossible to look away. 1. Ravens training camp: 10 players who need to have a strong 2025 preseason

There are several positions with competitions scheduled, and we're taking an early look at 10 players who need to have a strong 2025 preseason. Baltimore is loaded on the offensive side of the football, and GM Eric DeCosta knowingly chose to restock the defense with the organization's first two NFL draft picks. The Ravens' rookie arrived at the Under Armour Performance Center on Tuesday for the mid-July training camp. There are several positions with competitions scheduled, and we're taking an early look at 10 players who need to have a strong 2025 preseason. QB --Devin Leary Baltimore didn't select a quarterback in the NFL draft and signed no signal callers in the undrafted free agent class. The Ravens have an MVP as QB1 and a solid backup in Cooper Rush. Baltimore did select a quarterback in last year's NFL Draft, Devin Leary, out of Kentucky in the sixth round, but it didn't work out too well. Leary was cut in the preseason and then signed to the practice squad. If the Ravens carry two quarterbacks on the roster, Leary could be released and signed to the practice squad again. RB Rasheen Ali Baltimore didn't draft a running back and only has four players on the roster at the position. Henry is an All-Pro, Justice Hill is a solid No. 2 running back, and Keaton Mitchell provides a home run threat. Ali needs a strong training camp to warrant the Ravens carrying three running backs. WR Malik Cunningham Baltimore has ten wide receivers on the roster after selecting Colorado's LaJohntay Wester in Round 6. Cunningham is the only player in the position who is not a natural wide receiver but offers special-teams abilities. Cunningham needs an intense training camp to warrant a roster spot over Dayton Wade, Anthony Miller, and Keith Kirkwood. TE Zaire Mitchell-Paden Baltimore has a big three at the tight end position, and two of the top players in the league. Charlie Kolar is the clear No. 3, making things difficult for Mitchell-Paden. OL Ben Cleveland The Baltimore Ravens retained one of their key free agents, re-signing Ben Cleveland. Cleveland saw action in all 17 regular-season games as a backup at left guard, plus both playoff contests. The 2021 third-round pick finished the final year of his rookie deal and had no major suitors on the open market. Baltimore added three players to the NFL draft and has solid depth in key positions. Cleveland could be the odd man out if Emery Jones, Carson Vinson, or Garrett Dellinger established themselves at the offensive guard position. DT-C.J. Okoye Okoye, a Nigerian native, first joined the Chargers as part of the International Player Pathway Program. He had a sack in his first organized football game in the preseason. He'll compete in a position group that includes Nnamdi Madubuike, Travis Jones, John Jenkins, and Jayson Jones. DE-Adedayo Odeleye The 6'5″, 265-pound Nigerian-born prospect was part of the 2022 NFL International Player Pathway program with the Texans before spending this season on the Baltimore practice squad. Nicknamed "Dayo," he began playing American football at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom. Edge Rusher -- David Ojabo Kyle Van Noy and Odafe Oweh are the unquestioned starters, but the Ravens are hoping second-round pick Mike Green can assume a role from Day 1. Ojabo will battle Adisa Isaac, Tavius Robinson, and rookie Mike Green for snaps. Things can only go up for Ojabo after he played in 13 games last season. He has four sacks in his first three seasons, and it's now or never for the former Michigan pass rusher. OLB Adisa Isaac A 2024 third-round pick, Adisa Isaac saw action in four games and played 32 defensive snaps, as his NFL debut was delayed by a hamstring issue, which sidelined him for the Ravens' first two games. LB Trenton Simpson With Malik Harrison and Chris Board departing in free agency, John Harbaugh confirmed that Trenton Simpson would be first up in the battle at linebacker. Simpson was productive over Baltimore's first 11 games, logging 65 tackles (34 solo), but he was a liability in the passing game. Simpson was entirely out of the Ravens' inside-linebacker rotation following the Week 14 bye, and he was limited to special teams during Baltimore's two-game postseason run. Simpson finished the 2024 regular season with 73 tackles (40 solo), including 1.5 sacks, four pass defenses, and one fumble recovery across 17 games. He'll battle special-teams standout Jacob Hummel and fourth-round pick Teddye Buchanan. CB-Jalyn Armour-Davis Armour-Davis is entering a crucial time in his career. With the Ravens' cornerback position stacked with young talent, the former Alabama defensive back is getting reps at safety. Before the NFL draft and free agency, Baltimore had four cornerbacks on the roster. Since then, the Ravens have added Chidobe Awuzie, Bilal Kone (rookie), and Robert Longerbeam (rookie). T.J. Tampa is in a similar boat after missing most of his rookie season to various injuries. Armour-Davis will enter year four needing a strong training camp.

Orlando Pirates transfer news: Nkota, Mofokeng, Ighodaro, Saudi

Orlando Pirates have been by far the busiest team during the off-season. So far, the Buccaneers have signed nine players which including the likes of Sipho Mbule and Oswin Appollis. The nine players are part of the squad that is currently in Spain for their pre-season training. On Sunday, the Buccaneers shocked many fans when they announced the departure of Mohau Nkota. The 20-year-old has been one of their best players last season, scoring crucial goals in the league and CAF Champions League. 'Orlando Pirates confirm that an agreement has been reached for the permanent transfer of Mohau Nkota to Ettifaq Club in the Saudi Pro League,' the club said in a statement. 'The move is subject to the 20-year-old agreeing to personal terms and passing a medical. Nkota's departure comes after a standout debut season in the Buccaneers' senior squad, where he featured in 39 official matches and registered 12 goal contributions.' Relebohile Mofokeng is currently in Spain with the Buccaneers but has been widely tipped to move to Europe in the coming weeks. Both Mofokeng and Nkota were instrumental for Pirates last season, and losing them both could hurt the team. 'I feel alive,' Mofokeng said when he was asked about his pre-season 'Football is back, we're back, so that brings back my life. The rest [break] was short, but then it's work, what can we say? We have to get going,' he said as per KickOff. . It was reported in June that Orlando Pirates joined the race to sign Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro. Teams like Kaizer Chiefs were also said to be interested in the Nigerian-born forward who spent last season on loan at AmaZulu. Another Nigerian who is actually in the books of Orlando Pirates is Olisa Ndah. The talented defender is not part of the Buccaneers' pre-season squad in Spain. This week, his agent Mike Makaab revealed that the experienced centre back was in his final stages of rehabilitation and will rejoin the team when they return from camp.
