St. Paul police release images of Pride flag vandalism suspect

Authorities have released images of a suspect they believe is responsible for vandalizing rainbow Pride flags in St. Paul last week and are asking the public's help in identifying the person. Police say there have now been 30 instances of vandalism of rainbow flags, including one case where there was damage to the new Minnesota flag, in the Highland Park and Macalester-Groveland neighborhoods last week. 'While we believe this person is responsible for a number of those incidents, we cannot definitively say they are responsible for 'all' of the cases at this time,' said Nikki Muehlhausen, a St. Paul police spokesperson. Neighbors have been rallying together, buying more flags and signs and planning to display them in their yards. Three of the cases have been on Jefferson Avenue, between the 1700 and 2000 blocks; another two were on the 1200 block of Palace Avenue and two more on the 1700 block of Bayard Avenue. There have also been reports of vandalized flags at Half Priced Books & JS Bean Factory and police are investigating whether those incidents are connected to the other ones. Investigators are urging people in the Highland Park and Macalester-Groveland neighborhoods to come forward if they have any surveillance footage that may show the suspect or related information. Attempted carjacking in St. Paul leads to gunfire Thursday night

Police are investigating an attempted carjacking that led to gunfire on Thursday night in the Hamline-Midway area of St. Paul. Shortly after 8:30 p.m., officers were called to an attempted carjacking in the 1400 block of Blair Avenue, according to Nikki Muehlhausen, a St. Paul police spokesperson. When officers arrived on scene, the driver reported that three people, two of them armed, had attempted to steal their vehicle. One of the suspects reportedly fired two shots into the vehicle as they fled the scene. Nobody was injured. The incident was detailed in Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher's 'Live on Patrol' Facebook page in a post called, 'Lucky to be alive!': 'A young man was dropping his college friends off in the 1400 block of Blair last night when three suspects approached him and demanded his vehicle. He refused and drove away only to hear two shots strike his car. One narrowly missed him. You can see the entrance hole on the back window and the exit hole in the center of the windshield. Too close. The three suspects fled west on foot.' St. Paul investigates possible second exposure death; Salvation Army opens daytime warming centers

With low temperatures forecast to drop below zero in five of the next seven days, the Salvation Army has added 40 additional beds to its Harbor Light emergency shelter near Target Field in downtown Minneapolis and will keep seven service sites open across the Twin Cities as warming centers during daytime business hours. 'When the weather is more severe than usual, we make sure the service centers are open during the day as a place for people to go,' said Dan Furry, a spokesman for the Salvation Army Northern Division. The Salvation Army is inviting visitors to stop by during the day for a hot beverage. Locations include the St. Paul Eastside Salvation Army, 1019 Payne Ave., the St. Paul West Seventh Salvation Army, 401 W. Seventh St., and the Maplewood Salvation Army, 2080 Woodlynn Ave., as well as sites in Brooklyn Park, North Minneapolis, Northeast Minneapolis and South Minneapolis. Frigid temperatures can be life-threatening. A man was found dead in downtown St. Paul Wednesday morning and the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office is looking into whether his death was related to the cold. The 36-year-old was found on the side of a building and lying against an exhaust vent that puts out warmer air, a place that unsheltered people often use to keep warm at night, said Nikki Muehlhausen, a St. Paul police spokeswoman. During frigid weather in the beginning of December, the death of a 49-year-old man who was found outside in St. Paul has been ruled as occurring from the cold. It was the first exposure death of the season reported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office. The 'Arctic Overflow' accommodations at the Harbor Light Center at 1010 Currie Ave. in Minneapolis will be available overnight through the end of February and any other night when windchills are expected to approach zero degrees or lower. Those seeking emergency overnight shelter should contact Adult Shelter Connect at (612) 248-2350 and check for availability. According to the National Weather Service office in Chanhassen, temperatures on Thursday peaked at a high around 6 degrees, or -7 with wind chill. Those temperatures were expected to drop to -15 degrees on Sunday night, and even lower with wind chill.
