(File pic) PETALING JAYA : A 24-year-old man has claimed trial in the Seremban sessions court to a charge of trafficking in his own relative to be exploited by a scam syndicate. Jackson Choh Safri, 24, who hails from Sarawak, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before judge Surita Budin, Harian Metro reported. He was accused of trafficking in Joshua Edward, 27, at around 4am at a house in Youth City, Nilai, on June 24. The charge was framed under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, which provides for up to 20 years in prison and a fine, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Raya Nurul Balkis Zunaidi, who proposed bail of RM50,000, said the victim was both a relative and an employee of the accused. Lawyer Hafez Zalkapli sought a lower bail amount, saying Choh was now jobless and had to care for a disabled younger brother and an unemployed elder sister. Choh was allowed to post bail of RM20,000 but was told to surrender his passport and report to the nearest police station every month. The court fixed Aug 14 for submission of documents.

Ex-UiTM lecturer faces new sexual harassment case involving college student

The 21-year-old complainant claimed she met the lecturer in his office in April, when he allegedly spoke about sex and asked her to type certain words into his laptop to search for related images. (File pic) PETALING JAYA : A former Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) lecturer previously charged with sexual harassment in 2024 is facing similar accusations involving a student from a college in Negeri Sembilan. A source told FMT the 52-year-old man has been charged with verbally sexually assaulting the student with the intent to outrage her modesty at a private college in Nilai in May. He was charged in the Seremban sessions court on May 21 under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 10 years' jail, a fine, whipping, or any two of the punishments, if convicted. He was also suspended from his duties as a lecturer. Nilai police investigating officer Hamimi Ramli confirmed the matter with FMT, saying they were awaiting further instructions from the court. 'The accused pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of RM3,000. The case is in the process of document submission and appointment of legal counsel for the accused,' Hamimi said. The case came to light after the 21-year-old complainant shared on social media about being asked to meet the lecturer in his office for academic matters on April 23. However, the lecturer allegedly spoke about sex and asked the business management student to type certain words into his laptop to search for related images. Frightened, the student texted a friend for help before lodging a complaint with the college's management and filing a police report. UiTM had terminated the lecturer's employment following an FMT report two years ago, after he was accused of sexual harassment against a female student, who was allegedly asked to answer inappropriate survey questions over a phone call. He was charged in the Tangkak sessions court in March 2024 under Section 509 of the Penal Code for outraging a person's modesty. The trial is ongoing.
