Nine Inch Nails Roar Back With First ‘TRON: Ares' Single
Nine Inch Nails' first proper new song in five years, 'As Alive As You Need Me To Be,' has emerged ahead of the fall release of TRON: Ares, for which the Trent Reznor-led group is supplying the soundtrack. The latter is due Sept. 19 from Interscope, with the third film in the TRON franchise hitting theaters on Oct. 10. The propulsive 'As Alive As You Need Me To Be' burbles with dance floor menace and the revving sound of the futuristic motorcycles frequently seen in TRON's in-film racing sequences. The track was produced by Reznor and longtime collaborator Atticus Ross in tandem with Boyz Noize, Ian Kirkpatrick, BJ Burton and Hudson Mohawke. More from Spin: Alabama Shakes Shake, Rattle and Rock 'N Roll Again Perry Farrell Hits Back With Suit Against Jane's Addiction Bandmates New Blood Orange LP Boasts Lorde, Turnstile, Zadie Smith In all, NIN's TRON: Ares soundtrack sports more than 70 minutes of new music from the group, whose last new albums were the simultaneous 2020 releases Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts. 'I'll give a few spoilers: there's not one second of orchestra in our score,' Reznor recently told Empire. 'It sounds precise and unpleasant at times. It's not an atonal, punishing score, but we spent a lot of time thinking about the undertones of what's happening in the story. The concept of artificial life infused with feelings and emotions and a sense of questioning their purpose and their replaceability, their lack of soul, in some ways. We kind of riffed on that.' The movie stars Jared Leto, Jeff Bridges, Greta Lee and Even Peters in the follow-up to 2010's Tron: Legacy, itself a long-in-the-works sequel to the classic 1982 original film. Daft Punk's score for Tron: Legacy was a massive hit, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and selling more than a million copies in the United States, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. Wendy Carlos penned the score for the original movie. Nine Inch Nails' first North American tour in three years will get underway Aug. 6 in Oakland, Ca. Reznor and Ross are also hosting the first Future Ruins festival, which will be held Nov. 8 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center and feature performances by acclaimed film and TV music colleagues such as John Carpenter (Halloween, They Live, The Thing), Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein (Stranger Things, Lost in the Night), Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh (The Life Aquatic, The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore) and Questlove presenting the score works of Curtis Mayfield. Iconic ‘90s Rock Band Plays Classic Songs for First Time in Decades
Iconic '90s Rock Band Plays Classic Songs for First Time in Decades originally appeared on Parade. Even though Trent Reznor is a two-time Academy Award-winning composer, the 60-year-old still has some of that industrial angst that propelled him to rock greatness as the leader of Nine Inch Nails. And at the kickoff show for the band's Peel It Back tour, Reznor and crew revisited some of NIN's songs that made them legends in the 1990s, including some that haven't been played in decades. Reznor formed the group in 1988 in Cleveland, Ohio. Their debut album, 1989's Pretty Hate Machine, resonated with Gen X listeners (and MTV viewers who tuned in to videos for 'Head Like A Hole' and 'Down in It'). The band then achieved unprecedented mainstream success in '94 with their second album, The Downward Spiral. The critically acclaimed LP spawned 'Closer,' arguably Nine Inch Nails' most well-known song. NIN revisited another Downward Spiral classic at the start of their June 15 concert at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland. After playing 'Right Where It Belongs' (from With Teeth) that the band mixed with 'Somewhat Damaged (from The Fragile), Nine Inch Nails segued into 'Ruiner' and 'Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now).' It was the first time that the band played any of these songs live since 2009, according to The night also featured an appearance from Boys Noize, a German dance producer who's opening for NIN on the Peel It Back tour. Boys Noise also remixed Renzor and Atticus Ross' Challengers score, according to Stereogum. The producer accompanied the band in performances of 'Vessel' and 'Came Back Haunted,' as well as 'Parasite' – from Reznor and Ross's side-project, How To Destroy Angels. The Peel It Back Tour is Nine Inch Nails' first major tour since 2022. The opening night's performance featured classic NIN tracks, including 'Reptile,' 'Wish,' 'March of the Pigs,' and 'I'm Afraid of Americans,' the song that Reznor did with David Bowie. Recently, Reznor shared a personal memory of the late music icon, recalling a shocking moment when Bowie attended one of Nine Inch Nails' shows in 1995. The admission left fans reeling. Nine Inch Nails Play Live Rarities at Tour Kickoff in Dublin
Nine Inch Nails kicked off their Peel It Back Tour in Dublin with a selection of tracks the band haven't played live in a decade or more. The trek this summer is their first in three years. During their Sunday evening show, Nine Inch Nails kicked off their concert with Trent Reznor performing With Teeth cut 'Right Where It Belongs' solo on the piano. It was the first time sine 2009 that he's played the song live, and it turned into a medley with The Fragile track 'Somewhat Damaged.' More from Rolling Stone 'Tron: Ares': See New Trailer for Nine Inch Nails-Scored Sci-Fi Epic The Secret History of Nineties Lollapalooza Lollapalooza, Day One: Jane's Addiction Fight, Nine Inch Nails' Gear Melts, Ice-T Stays Chill With the full band on stage, they began reworked versions of 'Ruiner' and 'Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now),' both of which have not been played in 16 years. With opening act Boys Noize later in the show, they did Year Zero's 'Vessel,' Hesitation Marks single 'Came Back Haunted' and the How to Destroy Angels track 'Parasite.' All three songs had also been off the set list for many years. Of course, Nine Inch Nails' featured a number of their massive, arena-worthy hits alongside these deep cuts and live rarities. The band tore though songs like 'Wish,' 'March of the Pigs,' and 'Closer' as well as a cover of David Bowie's 'I'm Afraid of Americans.' Nine Inch Nails' last album releases were Ghosts V: Locusts and Ghosts VI: Together, a pair of albums released in 2020. They last toured in 2022. Reznor and bandmate Atticus Ross, who joined the band officially in 2016, have been pretty focused on their successful and popular movie scores. Last year, they worked with Luca Guadagnino twice, providing original music for his films Queer and Challengers. Their current touring opening act Boys Noize released a remix album of the Challengers score.
