49ers' Jauan Jennings taking a non-Brandon Aiyuk approach to contract demand, for now

Jauan Jennings isn't prepared to go all Brandon Aiyuk on the San Francisco 49ers. At least not yet. A year after Aiyuk requested a trade before training camp, feigned back and neck injuries to avoid summer practices and took to social media to voice his displeasure, it appears Jennings, Aiyuk's fellow wideout, won't take a scorched-earth approach when it comes to angling for a contract extension. After the 49ers reported to training camp Tuesday, general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that Jennings took his physical Monday, hadn't requested a trade and had indicated that he would participate in the first practice of camp Wednesday. 'I don't want to speak for Jauan, but we had a good visit and I anticipate him being out there,' Lynch said. 'You guys know our feelings on J.J. He embodies what we think a Niner is all about. He plays the right way. We love him. … We're not going to get into the contract stuff and all that — that takes care of itself. We love him and he's here.' Has there been dialogue about an extension between Jennings and the front office? Lynch didn't bite: 'We love him and he's here,' he repeated, smiling. Last week ESPN reported that Jennings, 28, would request a trade if an agreement on a contract extension wasn't reached by the start of training camp. However, Lynch indicated that Jennings hadn't communicated a desire to be traded to the team, saying he 'saw the same tweet you guys saw.' Jennings signed a two-year, $15.4 million extension last year, and he's presumably seeking a big raise after posting the biggest numbers of his four-season career. Jennings entered last season primarily known for his ferocious blocking and knack for making clutch third-down catches before he had 77 catches for 975 yards and six touchdowns. Jennings had 78 catches for 963 yards and seven touchdowns in his first three seasons. In 2024, Jennings had two games in which he had 10-plus catches. Only five other players in franchise history have had multiple 10-catch games in their career. 'I love J.J. and what he brings to our team and to myself as a quarterback,' Brock Purdy said. 'Obviously, we've had so much success together. Any time you see something like this going on, as a player it's like, 'Let's figure out something' so he can get back on the field and continue to do what we've done.' Purdy's response suggested he wasn't aware that, unlike Aiyuk in 2024, Jennings plans to participate in training-camp practices. Last year Aiyuk staged a so-called 'hold-in,' saying his injuries prevented him from practicing so he didn't get fined, before the 49ers threatened to suspend him for conduct detrimental to the team. Aiyuk ended the lengthy impasse by signing a four-year, $120 million extension in late August. Before Jennings' demand for a new deal, it appeared the 49ers would avoid the contract strife that's marked most of their recent offseasons. This spring, they signed Purdy, tight end George Kittle and linebacker Fred Warner to lucrative extensions before June. Asked about the latest contract drama involving Jennings, Shanahan said such situations could be avoided only if the 49ers front office caved to players' demands. 'I don't call that drama,' Shanahan said. 'I call that business. If you want to avoid all drama, just be extremely bad at business. And just be ridiculous on everything and I guess there'd be no drama until you tear your team apart doing that. But we've got a great relationship with these guys. … We'll do everything we can to make it work out. But it's not always easy to make it work out.' Jennings could have leverage in negotiations given the state of the 49ers' wide receiver corps. Aiyuk had knee surgery in November and Shanahan said Tuesday that he was hopeful he could return during the first half of the regular season. Meanwhile, Ricky Pearsall, last season's first-round pick, has a hamstring injury that will sideline him for the start of camp, and nine-year veteran Demarcus Robinson could face a season-opening suspension due to a DUI arrest. With Aiyuk and Pearsall sidelined, the 49ers were poised to have just three wideouts with at least 60 career catches available for their first camp practice before they signed Equanimeous St. Brown on Tuesday. St. Brown has 63 catches for 928 yards and two touchdowns in six seasons.

49ers receiver Jauan Jennings reports to training camp seeking a new contract

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Jauan Jennings reported to training camp for the San Francisco 49ers as he seeks a new contract and the team expects him to be on the field when practice begins on Wednesday. General manager John Lynch said Tuesday that Jennings passed a physical when he reported for camp this week. 'I anticipate him being out there,' Lynch said. 'You guys know our feelings on JJ. He embodies what we think a Niner is all about. He plays the right way and we love him. We're not going to get into the contract talks and all that. That takes care of itself. We love him and he's here.' Coach Kyle Shanahan said Jennings hasn't formally requested a trade. Jennings is entering the final season of a two-year, $15.4 million contract and is seeking a long-term extension before the season. Shanahan said he would like to be able to reach an extension with both Jennings and right tackle Colton McKivitz before the season. 'The way they feel about us is the same way we feel about them,' Shanahan said. 'That's the easy part. The hard part is the business side.' The Niners were hoping to avoid the contract distractions this summer after dealing with disputes with Nick Bosa, Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams the past two seasons that kept all of them out of training camp practices. They reached extensions early in the offseason with stars Brock Purdy, Fred Warner and George Kittle, but now have a potential issue with Jennings. The 2020 seventh-round pick has emerged as one of Purdy's most trusted options at wide receiver after having 77 catches for 975 yards and six TDs last season. With Deebo Samuel having been traded to Washington in March and Aiyuk working back from a knee injury, Jennings has a big role this season. 'It's extremely important obviously,' Purdy said about having Jennings at practice. 'I love JJ and what he brings to our team. Obviously we've had so much success together and anytime you see something like this going on, as a player let's figure out something so we can get back on the field.' Injury updates The Niners have several players starting camp in injury lists with the only expected long-term absences coming from players dealing with ACL injuries: Aiyuk, safety Malik Mustapha, linebacker Curtis Robinson and rookie quarterback Kurtis Rourke. Lynch said those players will likely start the season on injured lists but is hopeful they can return some time during the first half of the season. Receiver Ricky Pearsall, defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos and offensive lineman Andre Dillard all will start camp on the physically unable to perform list but are expected back on the field soon. Ben Bartch, who is in the mix to start at left guard, will also miss at least the first three days of camp on the non-football injury list after injuring his quadriceps working out on his own. Running back Christian McCaffrey and Williams are both 'here and healthy,' Shanahan said, but their work loads will be managed through camp after dealing with injuries last season. Roster move With questions at receiver, the Niners signed Equanimeous St. Brown to add depth at the position following a tryout on Monday that featured six receivers. St. Brown, the brother of Detroit star Amon-Ra St. Brown, has 63 catches for 928 yards in 62 career games for Green Bay, Chicago and New Orleans. ___ AP NFL:

Jauan Jennings at training camp, hasn't formally asked for trade

Wide receiver Jauan Jennings was a topic of conversation at a press conference featuring 49ers General Manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan on Tuesday. A report last week that Jennings wants to be traded if he does not receiver a contract extension from the 49ers was followed by one that said he planned to report to training camp on time despite those feelings. Lynch confirmed that Jennings was at camp during the press conference and that the team expects he will be practicing while declining to say whether there were any contract talks going on. 'We anticipate him being out there,' Lynch said, via Vic Tafur of 'You guys know our feelings about JJ. He embodies what we think a Niner's all about. Plays the right way and we love him. We're not going to talk about contracts and all that, but we love him and he's here.' Shanahan said later in the press conference that Jennings has not formally requested a trade away from the team at this point. That possibility may be broached during conversations with Jennings's camp on an informal basis, but, for now, it looks like Jennings and the 49ers are moving ahead on the same track.

Could Aaron Rodgers retire as a Packer? NFL legend opens up about signing one-day deal with Green Bay

Aaron Rodgers hints at final Packers reunion before retirement, leaves door open for one-day contract return (Getty Images) As June unfolds and NFL teams finalize their 2025 rosters, one name remains glaringly absent from any lineup — Aaron Rodgers. The 41-year-old quarterback, once the face of the Green Bay Packers, is still undecided about his next move. And while he hasn't ruled out returning to the field, he's just as focused on the possibility of calling it a career. Aaron Rodgers leaves fans buzzing after teasing potential one-day return to Green Bay Packers In a recent appearance on the 'YNK Podcast,' Aaron Rodgers was asked whether he'd consider retiring as a Packer by signing a symbolic one-day contract — a tradition many teams honor for franchise legends. The quarterback's response was contemplative. "I've thought about that, but I don't understand what the reason for that is," Rodgers admitted. "At the same time, I grew up a [49ers] fan and most of my favorite players retired as a Niner. Jerry Rice, who went to three other teams, came back and retired as a Niner, so I understand the cool thing about it, but if I didn't do it, would that make a difference in how I'm viewed in the Packers' eyes?" Mia's Brothers On The Hot Seat: Mike & Aaron Rodgers (Live in Austin, TX) Rodgers' comments reflected a mixture of reverence and realism. His Green Bay departure in 2023 was far from smooth. He had publicly criticized the front office for prioritizing long-term plans over immediate Super Bowl pushes, particularly regarding how they treated his veteran teammates. That tension ultimately led to a trade to the New York Jets. Still, despite those frustrations, Rodgers hasn't closed the book on Green Bay completely. "There's a lot of love for me and how I feel about the team," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "If I do or I don't [retire as a Packer], I don't think it should make a difference. I'm not sure yet. If they approached me about it, I probably would." Rodgers' impact on the Packers is undeniable. Drafted 24th overall in 2005, he went on to play 18 seasons with the franchise, racking up over 59,000 passing yards, 475 touchdowns, and four MVP awards. He led the team to a Super Bowl XLV victory and carved his name alongside Packers legends like Brett Favre and Bart Starr. Yet after his Achilles injury in the Jets' 2023 season opener and an underwhelming 2024 campaign, Rodgers was released. His current free-agent status leaves the football world speculating. Though rumors of a potential stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers have circulated, Rodgers' lack of urgency suggests that retirement is just as likely. Adding to the uncertainty is a recent revelation from Rodgers — someone close to him is battling cancer. That personal battle, coupled with his age and the physical demands of the sport, may further influence his future. Despite the ambiguity, one thing remains clear: Rodgers' legacy in Green Bay is secure. Whether or not he signs a ceremonial one-day deal, his contributions to the Packers are etched in NFL history. For fans, seeing him don the green and gold one last time would be a poetic ending to a storied career — but for Rodgers, that chapter will only close on his own terms.
