Starving puppies dumped along trail in Greensburg
By: KDKA-TV intern Gianna Girol Three emaciated, dehydrated puppies were dumped along the Five Star Trail in Greensburg on Thursday, an animal shelter said. Ninth Life Rescue Center asked for help figuring out who abandoned the dogs, calling it an active investigation. "We are desperately seeking information regarding where they came from and who dumped them. Did you see someone on the trail carrying a box? Did your neighbors have puppies on Wednesday but not on Thursday? Call us," Ninth Life Rescue Center said in a Facebook post. Ninth Life Rescue Center says the dogs have almost no body fat, and their ribs and bones can be seen through their bodies. They also have puncture wounds on their bodies and broken teeth. The dogs are also not suffering from a pre-existing medical condition that would cause them to appear this way. "We are sad and angry about their conditions and complete lack of body fat. You can see every bone in their body, this didn't happen overnight. These are not sick puppies who got this way because of a medical condition, they were starving," Ninth Life Rescue Center said. (Photo: Ninth Life Rescue Center/Facebook) Many stepped in to care for the dogs An individual on the trail happened to open the moving box and found the dogs on the trail. Hoffman Kennels then responded and brought the dogs to the Ninth Life Rescue Center. Ninth Life Rescue Center says the dogs may not have survived outside in the box for very long due to the heat wave. They say that Hoffman Kennel's quick actions helped to save the animals' lives. The dogs are being cared for The center is providing the dogs with veterinarian care, feeding the dogs and giving them water every few hours to help them recover. Their bodies are currently adjusting to the nutrients and the feeding schedule. There is currently no information on how the animals ended up on the trail and why.

Online scammers targeting Westmoreland County animal rescue
After helping to rescue some 40 cats from deplorable conditions in Ligonier last week, the Ninth Life Rescue Center is now trying to stop a scammer from collecting and stealing donations. This is an issue that many animal 501(c)(3) organizations have to deal with. "We have multiple people claiming our rescue on Venmo," said Jen Johnson. "They are even using pictures of our cats, which is horrible." Johnson says these scammers have set up separate Venmo accounts with similar names to her charity and she says they have been reaching out to her past donors for money. One of the former donors was suspicious and alerted Johnson about the scam. Johnson says that while they always accept donations, they never reach out directly to people. Both the online platform and law enforcement have been made aware of what has been going on, but now, Johnson says she wants the public to know that there are devious people who are out there stealing money and, ultimately, hurting animals. "We need these funds," said Johnson. "It makes me very angry that people would put that much effort into something fake and try to scam people out of money that is supposed to go to sick cats. Like come on, it doesn't get any lower than that." If you are donating to a charity online, verify before you certify that donation. The official links to donate to Ninth Life Rescue Center can be found at this Facebook link or on the 'fundraisers' page of the shelter's website .

Resident found dead, dozens of cats rescued from Ligonier Township home
Mar. 21—Forty cats are recovering after being rescued from a home in Ligonier Township this week. Jen Johnson, president of Ninth Life Rescue Center, said felines are still being trapped outside after they escaped when police got into the home Monday evening to check on a resident. The animals didn't have food or water and many, including 10 kittens, have medical issues such as vestibular disease and infections. The deplorable conditions made it difficult for Ninth Life volunteers, who were assisted by All But Furgotten, to capture the felines. "It was a battle to find them all," Johnson said. "They're going to be very costly ... and this is just the beginning of courting season and kitten season." Some cats were found dead, she said. A 69-year-old man was found dead inside after police were asked to check on him, according to Coroner Tim Carson. The death is not considered suspicious. Ligonier Valley police could not be reached Friday. Authorities contended with dozens of empty boxes of beer, empty cat food bags and other trash strewn throughout the home, according to photos posted on social media by Ninth Life. The rescue center is seeking donations to help care for the cats. Monetary donations are accepted through PayPal at ninthliferescue@ Venmo @NinthLife-RescueCenter, through veterinarian tabs at Vought Veterinary Services and All Pets Hospital or by mail at PO Box 74, Grapeville, Pa. 15634. The organization also has Amazon and Chewy wish lists. Renatta Signorini is a TribLive reporter covering breaking news, crime, courts and Jeannette. She has been working at the Trib since 2005.
