FIR against Bengaluru North University VC under SC/ST Act
The Kolar police have registered an FIR against Niranjana Vanalli, the Vice Chancellor (VC) of Bengaluru North University (BNU) under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) amendment bill 2015, and also under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Following the directions of the district sessions court of Kolar, the police have registered an FIR. Manjunatha. R, guest faculty of the BNU had filed a private complaint before the court. The court directed the police to register an FIR, conduct an investigation and submit the report. According to the FIR, the complainant accused the VC of insulting him based on his caste. 'Though there were no complaints against me, the VC had placed an additional agenda in the syndicate meeting making false allegations against me and also tried to defame me. He is harassing me as I belong to the SC community,' the complaint read.

Media professionals told to uphold values while updating skills
Vice-Chancellor of Bengaluru North University Niranjana Vanalli here on Wednesday suggested that media professionals uphold values while updating skills. He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a three-day workshop on 'Kannada media, opportunities and skills' organised by the Department of Kannada at Mangalore University. He said if one wants to grow in media it requires developing skills such as language proficiency, writing style, and the ability to communicate effectively. While skills are essential, upholding values and social responsibility are equally important for earning respect in the sector. 'Language and writing are the two essential tools for media aspirants. Language is our strength, and words are our weapons. Those who do not understand the subtleties of writing and perception can never succeed in the media field,' he said. The Vice-Chancellor said that the media sector has expanded beyond traditional journalism, offering opportunities in event management, advertising, public relations, and more. While the media industry is driven by money, journalists often do not receive fair compensation. 'The media industry will only attract talented young people if it offers respectable remuneration,' he said. P.. Dharma, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, who presided over the inaugural session, stressed on the importance of language proficiency and values in the media sector. K. Raju Mogaveera, registrar (administration) of Mangalore University, spoke about the role of journalists as contemporary historians, emphasising the importance of truth, clarity, and social responsibility.
