Spotted Pics Of ‘Happy Birthday Guruji'? The Story Behind Spiritual Guide Of B-Town, Delhi Bigwigs

Last Updated: As a child, he was often engrossed in deep meditation in the fields, unaffected by the sun or rain. If you spotted 'Happy Birthday Guruji" signs, banners and posters on Delhi streets on July 7, then you are not alone. This Guruji is none other than Nirmal Singh Maharaj. Also revered as Guruji Chattarpur Wal, he was believed to be Lord Shiva's incarnate. Guruji Nirmal Singh Maharaj was one of the most celebrated gurus in India. Over the years, he amassed quite a number of followers. In fact, prominent Bollywood celebrities like Jacqueline Fernandez, Hema Malini, and the Kapoor family sought his blessings by attending his spiritual gatherings. His birthday anniversary was on July 7 and hence the elaborate decorations. Nirmal Singh Maharaj was born in 1952 in Punjab's Dugri village. As per Guruji's official website, the day he was born, the midwife saw a snake in the room and the entire premises were illuminated with light. As a child, he was often engrossed in deep meditation in the fields, unaffected by the sun or rain. His classmates would tease him for not being interested in the usual fun. Guruji studied at Dugri Primary School and later attended Government High School. He completed his college at the Government College in Malerkotla. He had a double M.A. degree in English and Economics, and was fluent in English. He left his home in 1975. In 1983, he started working with the Punjab School Education Board as a clerical assistant. Guruji often stayed with acquaintances but would suddenly disappear miraculously for days without a word, claimed his website. People flocked to him seeking relief from illnesses or troubles. Word of his healing quickly spread across Punjab. According to his followers, Guruji could decode a person's entire life—past, present, and future—just by looking at them. He would then bless each devotee in a way he felt was right for them. Guruji lived in several cities, including Chandigarh, Panchkula, Delhi, and Mumbai, before finally making his home in Jalandhar. In 1990, he built the Shiv Mandir in the Bhatti Mines, Chattarpur. It has now been named the Bada Mandir by his followers. This temple also holds his Samadhi. Devotees believe that the tea and langar prasad offered during his satsangs carry his divine blessings. Guruji Nirmal Singh Maharaj died in Delhi on May 31, 2007. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
