Serbian police detain 79 people in crackdown on protests

BELGRADE, July 3 (Reuters) - Serbian police detained 79 protesters late on Wednesday in a crackdown on street demonstrators calling for a snap election and an end of the 12-year rule of the President Aleksandar Vucic and his Serbian Progressive Party. Police and protesters clashed in the capital Belgrade and the cities of Novi Sad, Nis and Novi Pazar, the interior ministry said in the statement on Thursday. Months of protests across Serbia, including university shutdowns, have rattled Vucic, a former ultranationalist who converted to the cause of European Union membership in 2008. His second term ends in 2027, when parliamentary elections are also scheduled. The protesters launched blockades of major junctions and roads in Belgrade and other towns across Serbia on Sunday over the arrest of activists when police and demonstrators clashed at a big opposition rally on Saturday. On Wednesday evening, police moved to remove students in front of the entrance of the Law Faculty in Belgrade, and briefly detained dozens, N1 TV reported. Oliver Stojkovic, a professor at the medical faculty, told Fonet news agency that four students had been injured in the police action and taken to hospital. "This (the police action) is an absolute violation of human rights and a violation of the freedom of the university," Bozo Prelevic, a former interior minister, told Reuters. The U.N. human rights office said on X it was "closely monitoring situation after reports of violence, harassment & arbitrary detention of protesters" and urged authorities to exercise restraint. Vucic's opponents accuse him and his allies of ties to organised crime, violence against rivals and curbing media freedoms. Vucic denies the accusations. Protests by students, opposition, teachers, workers and farmers began last December after 16 people died on November 1 in a Novi Sad railway station roof collapse. Protesters blame corruption for the disaster.

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Serbian police said they detained 79 university students and other protesters as they broke up street blockades in several cities that are part of persistent dissent against President Aleksandar Vucic's populist government. Officers in riot gear intervened late Wednesday and early Thursday in the capital, Belgrade, the northern city of Novi Sad and the southern cities of Nis and Novi Pazar. Authorities denied reports of police brutality and excessive force against demonstrators. University students behind the protests said police charged and injured many peaceful demonstrators. Witnesses told local media that riot police beat up protesters with batons and shields and that four students were hospitalized, including one with a broken clavicle. Four officers were injured and a police vehicle was damaged, the Interior Ministry said in a statement, noting officers 'acted in accordance with the law' while responding to the unrest Wednesday and early Thursday. Tensions in the Balkan country have soared since a rally Saturday demanding early parliamentary elections. The gathering by tens of thousands of people in Belgrade ended with clashes between riot police and groups of protesters. Vucic has refused to schedule a snap vote despite more than eight months of persistent demonstrations. The protests began in November after a renovated rail station canopy collapsed in Novi Sad, killing 16 people and triggering allegations of corruption-fueled negligence in state infrastructure projects. Parliamentary and presidential elections are due in 2027. While rejecting the election demand, Vucic has stepped up government pressure to curb the protests that he describes as 'terror' and attempts to bring down the state. Critics say Vucic has become increasingly authoritarian since coming to power over a decade ago, stifling democratic freedoms while allowing corruption and organized crime to flourish, which he has denied. Serbia is formally seeking entry to the European Union, but Vucic's government has nourished relations with Russia and China.

Controversial Kerry windfarm plans submitted a second time to An Bord Pleanála

The controversial Ballynagare windfarm incorporates townlands near Lixnaw in North Kerry and has met with stiff local opposition since it was first proposed in 2021. The development was initially refused planning by Kerry County Council in 2022 because the designated area was not zoned for windfarm development. This decision was later appealed to An Bord Pleanála and was rejected in 2023 due to environmental concerns and the risk of flooding. But a recent High Court decision has overruled the planning regulator resulting a fresh appeal by Ballynagare Wind Farm Ltd that is due to be decided on by An Bord Pleanála in August. The new application includes a Natura Impact (Nis) and Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR). Among the list of concerns relating to the initial submission are the proposed blade heights (170 metres) that would create a visual impact due to the low-lying nature of the landscape. The local authority cited six reasons for its refusal in 2022, including that it would be 'detrimental' to the visual landscape and views of the medieval Rattoo Tower. It was stated the round tower and Ballyduff are close to the tourist route of the Wild Atlantic Way and the wind turbines would impact views both from the village of Lixnaw and the tower. Concerns over noise from the turbines and the 'absolute depletion' of habitats for birds and fauna that frequent the site were also highlighted.

Major EV company unveils record-breaking car carrier set to transport thousands of vehicles: '[Enhanced] operational efficiency'

Electric vehicle giant BYD just launched a new cargo ship capable of carrying 9,200 of the automaker's electric and hybrid vehicles overseas for sale. The new mega car carrier is called the Shenzhen, an ode to the Chinese automaker's hometown. And it's officially the world's largest ro-ro — or roll on, roll off — cargo ship made to transport large volumes of eco-minded vehicles. Car News China reported the new vessel is 718.5 feet long and 126.7 feet wide. Its maximum speed is 18.5 knots, or about 21 miles an hour. Though the Shenzhen is the world's largest car carrier, BYD claims it is also the world's most environmentally friendly. The company isn't providing exact details on how its carrier runs, but Car News China reported it's equipped with "energy-saving devices to enhance operational efficiency." The ship includes battery packs and shaft-belt generators to help power its needs, according to Electrek. It also utilizes natural gas and traditional marine fuel, per Car News China. The Shenzhen is BYD's fourth cargo ship. The maker's first launched in January 2024 and has already completed trips to Europe and Brazil. BYD's three existing ro-ro ships can each carry up to 7,000 vehicles per trip. Car News China reported that BYD plans to have a total of eight carriers by early 2026 to help fuel its global expansion. BYD has already entered the new energy auto market in 100 countries and regions around the globe — and that number is expected to rise in 2025. The automaker sold a record 4.25 million new energy vehicles last year, a more than 40% increase from its 2023 numbers, per Car News China. This volume includes the maker's electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. BYD also produced more than 1.77 million vehicles last year, topping Tesla by about 4,500 units and securing its place as the world's largest new energy vehicle manufacturer. Tesla, however, produced more fully electric vehicles — 1.78 million vehicles compared to BYD's 1.76 million. BYD's continued growth — and the success of competing EV manufacturers — is good news for the planet. The transportation sector is the second largest source of pollution heating up our planet, behind electricity and heat. Unlike gas-powered vehicles, EVs produce no planet-warming air pollution when driven and don't run on dirty energy sources. Every EV on the road lowers transportation-related pollution, which is why the growing demand for EVs is something to celebrate. The Environmental Protection Agency reports that wider adoption of EVs would improve public health, lowering the risk of respiratory irritation, illnesses, and cancers linked to air pollution. If you were going to purchase an EV, which of these factors would be most important to you? Cost Battery range Power and speed The way it looks Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. Electrek's report noted that BYD's growing presence in competing markets has forced legacy automakers to take EVs seriously. The news site reported that Nissan and Honda have "teamed up on EVs to fend off BYD's surge." Recently launching in South Korea, BYD plans to launch new vehicles in Mexico, Brazil, Europe, Singapore, Thailand, and additional competitive regions this year.
