Third-generation Nissan e-Power hybrid system promises EV-like driving

Nissan Bets on Simpler, Smoother Hybrid Tech Hybrids are ubiquitous, but none operate quite like those with Nissan's e-Power system, the third generation of which just debuted in the redesigned Qashqai crossover for the European market, but is expected to reach the United States in 2026 in the next-generation Rogue. While most automakers opt for a parallel hybrid system that allows both an internal-combustion engine and electric motors to directly power the wheels, e-Power is a series hybrid system, in which the combustion engine acts purely as a generator, with electricity providing all of the motive power. That means instant response to throttle inputs, as in an EV, and is mechanically simpler than other hybrid systems, Nissan notes. Numerous Improvements A key update for the third-generation e-Power system is the integration of an electric motor, generator, inverter, and a reduction gear into a single unit that's more compact and lighter than the previous packaging, Nissan said in a press release. Battery capacity is unchanged from the previous Qashqai hybrid, at 2.1 kilowatt-hours. The new Qashqai hybrid also retains a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, but Nissan made a few changes to boost efficiency, power, and refinement. Thermal efficiency has improved to 42%, meaning more of the fuel volume actually gets translated into energy for turning the wheels. Low-speed performance in particular has been approved, according to Nissan, while a larger turbo lets the engine operate 200 rpm lower at highway speeds, reducing noise (overall cabin noise is down to 56 decibels, Nissan claims). The automaker says these changes make the previous engine's variable-compression-ratio tech redundant. Nissan estimates 62 mpg on the European WLTP testing cycle, which is generally more optimistic than the U.S. EPA testing cycle. Output improves by about 15 horsepower, to 202 hp. That's about the same as the 201 hp rating of the U.S.-spec 2025 Nissan Rogue, which uses a variable-compression turbo-three engine without a hybrid system. It's not likely to reach the U.S., but Nissan confirmed last year that it planned to launch e-Power in the U.S. and Canada by the end of fiscal year 2026. Earlier this year, the automaker said the Rogue would get the third-generation e-Power system, along with the Qashqai and a minivan. While the Rogue could use a hybrid option, as most of its U.S.-market rivals already offer one, e-Power still comes with some questions. Series hybrids have struggled with efficiency and vibration issues at the steady-state highway speeds that are common in the U.S. That's why other automakers have avoided this tech (Honda's two-motor hybrid system comes close, but still allows the engine to directly drive the wheels in certain situations) and why Nissan has hesitated to bring e-Power to the U.S. Nissan launched the first-generation e-Power system in Japan in 2016, on the Note hatchback. As of last October, it claimed to save sold more than 1.5 million vehicles with the system, and that it was available in 68 markets. It's been promising U.S. sales for most of that span, even announcing plans to make e-Power the default powertrain tech for its Infiniti luxury brand. But those plans were canceled in 2021. Rogue Plug-In Hybrid Too 2025 Nissan Rogue — Source: Nissan Nissan's technical skills and tenacity shouldn't be underestimated, however. It made variable-compression engines work even after other automakers had given up on the concept, after all. And Nissan likely has a backup plan for the Rogue as well. Car and Driver reported last October that a Nissan Rogue plug-in hybrid would likely arrive for the 2026 model year, borrowing tech from its Mitsubishi Outlander platform-mate. The plug-in hybrid is expected to be sold alongside the Rogue e-Power hybrid, helping the Rogue achieve parity with rivals like the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and Toyota RAV4, which all offer both hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options. Addison teen charged with leading police on high-speed chase, possessing gun in Wood Dale, Illinois

A teen was ordered held after being charged with leading police on a high-speed chase while possessing a handgun in Wood Dale, Illinois, earlier this week, the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office announced on Friday. Emmanuel Rivera, 18, of Addison, Illinois, was charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding, one count of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses, including leaving the scene of an accident involving damage and speeding over 35 miles per hour over the limit. Rivera appeared in court Thursday afternoon, where the judge granted the state's motion to deny his pre-trial release. On Tuesday, Wood Dale officers responded to a disturbance involving a white Nissan sedan in the 500 block of North Maple Avenue, just after 9 p.m. Shortly after, officers saw the Nissan heading northbound on Maple Avenue as it turned east onto Elmhurst Street. Officers in two separate squad cars activated their emergency lights and attempted to perform a traffic stop. The Nissan driver, later identified as Rivera, allegedly did not pull over, ignored a stop sign, and fled eastbound on Elmhurst Street, leading to a pursuit. It is further alleged that Rivera reached speeds of at least 60 miles per hour in a 20-mile-per-hour zone, the office said. After turning southbound on Route 83 from Elmhurst Street, he crashed into a median and disabled the Nissan. At that time, Rivera and multiple occupants allegedly exited the vehicle and fled on foot. During a search of the Nissan, officers found a Glock 27, sub-compact, .40 caliber firearm with one bullet in the chamber. Later that evening, officers identified Rivera as the driver. He turned himself in to the Wood Dale Police Department. He is due back in court on July 21.

Nissan Armada Nismo gets performance makeover

A family-moving SUV just got a performance makeover. The internet doesn't appear sold. Nissan is rolling out a sport-tuned version of its high-rolling, three-row Armada SUV, a near-luxury set of wheels that already starts at $60,000. The new trim is called the Armada Nismo — it's set to hit dealerships lots this fall. It's also hugely important for an automaker that recently posted flagging sales and a CEO change . The standard Armada got a full redesign for this year, swapping its aging V8 engine for a more efficient and powerful V6. The style reboot features a boxier look with width-spanning LED taillights, extra chrome, and a plush seven- or eight-seat interior. Now, Nissan is cranking up the attitude. The Nismo trim adds red interior and exterior accents, reworked lower body panels, and a squatter stance. Under the hood, the Nismo gets a 35-horsepower bump and tweaked valves that deepen the exhaust sounds — but only if you spring for premium fuel. 'Armada NISMO expands the Armada family to connect with drivers who share a passion for excitement, performance, and bold, sports-inspired design,' a product spokesperson told While Nissan hasn't revealed pricing yet, current Armada trims range from $59,000 to $82,000. That positions the Nismo squarely in the territory of premium family SUVs — a growing, lucrative market segment in the US, where large vehicles continue to dominate new car sales. But the launch comes at a tricky time for the automaker. Nissan has faced shrinking profits, leadership shakeups, and ongoing headwinds from President Donald Trump's 25 percent automotive tariffs — a policy that affects models like the Japan-produced Armada . Nissan has been in big trouble for months. In November, executives at the company warned the automaker only had '12 months' of cash on hand to survive . Its financial position comes after turmoil in the C-suite. Carlos Ghosn, the former CEO who helped revive the company in the 2000s, was arrested in 2018 by authorities in Tokyo. They believed the executive misused company assets. Ghosn was flown out of the country in a plane's cargo in 2019. He has remained in Lebanon since. In his absence, the company had an aging portfolio with old transmission technology. The cars were built at dozens of factories around the world, leaving the company extremely susceptible to global onshoring trends. A leadership vacuum appeared at the company after his legal turmoils. Makoto Uchida, a Japanese executive, took over, but was ousted after six years. Ivan Espinosa took over as top boss earlier this year. Despite selling the fifth-most cars in the US last year, Moody's, a credit agency, downranked Nissan to 'junk' status earlier this year .

Nissan to launch new e-Power hybrid system

Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Corporation announced it will launch its latest-generation e-Power hybrid powertrain in Europe this year, which it says delivers enhanced efficiency, lower emissions, and a quieter drive compared with the previous generation. Nissan pointed out that the third-generation, 5-in-1 modular e-Power system has been comprehensively re-engineered to help 'smooth its transition from fuel towards zero emissions.' It integrates the electric motor, generator, inverter, reducer and increaser, into a compact and lighter package. The new powertrain features an all-new, dedicated 3-cylinder 1.5-litre turbocharged engine used only to generate electricity, which is distributed directly to the electric motor and also to charge the battery when required. Nissan pointed out that the e-Power does not have a 'complicated gearbox and coupling to combine petrol power and electric energy to drive the wheels, meaning that response is instant and the drive is always smooth, just like an EV.' It also uses a regenerative braking system to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy, which is fed back into the battery. The new e-Power system will be installed for the first time in Europe in the new Qashqai, scheduled to be launched in September, providing a fuel consumption of 4.5 litres per 100 km (WLTP), a range of up to 1200 km, CO2 emissions reduced to 102g/km from 116g/km in the previous system, while cabin noise has been reduced to 5.6 decibels. It will have a 'real-world' range is over 1000 km on a full tank. The new e-Power system will also be available in the North American Rogue SUV in the 2026 model year and in the fourth-generation Elgrand large minivan, which is scheduled to be launched in Japan in the 2026 fiscal year. Nissan's Chief Technology Officer, Eiichi Akashi, said in a statement: 'This new, third generation e-Power system redefines Nissan's hybrid technology, providing smooth and responsive driving in all conditions. We've embedded close to a decade of learnings to ensure the system is more efficient, more refined, and more competitive. The launch with Qashqai is just the beginning. We look forward to delivering this advanced powertrain to customers in North America and Japan in FY26, with other markets to follow.'
