Nissan recalls nearly 444K vehicles for engine failures
This story was originally published on Automotive Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Automotive Dive newsletter. Nissan North America has recalled nearly 444,000 vehicles due to a manufacturing defect 'in specific engine bearings or supporting engine components' that could lead to damage and/or engine failures, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recalled vehicles are equipped with 1.5L 3-cylinder or 2.0L 4-cylinder engines that feature the automaker's variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) technology. The models include the 2021-2024 Rogue SUV; 2019-2020 Altima sedan; 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50 crossover; and 2022 Infiniti QX55 crossover coupe. Dealers will inspect the engine oil pans of the vehicles for signs of metal debris, and repair or replace the engine as necessary if debris is present, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Aug. 25. According to the report, the engine bearing failures are not instantaneous and progress over time. Drivers of these vehicles would typically receive multiple forms of audible and visible advance warnings over time. Symptoms may also include abnormal noises from the engine compartment, rough running conditions, illumination of malfunction indicator lights or other warning messages in the instrument cluster. An estimated 1.2% of the recalled vehicles equipped with 3-cylinder engines are suspected of having the engine manufacturing defects, and a majority of these recalled vehicles (348,554) are 2021-2024 Nissan Rogue models. For models with 4-cylinder engines, around 0.08% are estimated to have the defect. The NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation opened a preliminary investigation of engine failures involving Nissan Rogues equipped with 3-cylinder engines on Dec. 13, 2023. The probe was launched after the agency identified six vehicle owner questionnaires and multiple field reports alleging engine failures, loss of motive power, engine knocking noise and/or metal debris in the oil pan. Dealing with a major engine recall could be costly for Nissan, but the automaker aims to address some of the potential engine problems with a software update. Still, the remedy requires that hundreds of thousands of customers in the U.S. schedule a service appointment at a dealer for the initial inspection, the inconvenience of which could further impact Nissan's brand reputation. For customers with vehicles equipped with 3-cylinder 1.5L VC-Turbo engines, if no debris is detected in the oil during the inspection, dealers will replace the oil pan gasket, engine oil, and reprogram the vehicle's engine control module. The repairs will be done at no cost and should take less than an hour to complete, according to the report. For customers with Nissan vehicles equipped with 4-cylinder VC-turbo engines, dealers will replace the engine oil if no metal debris is detected. However, if any of the recalled vehicles show signs of metal contamination in the oil, which will be confirmed by Nissan's Powertrain Call Center, dealers will be instructed to replace the engine assembly at no charge. Engine replacement may take up to fifteen hours to complete, according to the recall report. Nissan dealers will be notified about the recall on July 15. The recall is the second major powertrain recall in recent months by a major automaker, which collectively extend to over 1 million vehicles. In April, General Motors recalled over 595,000 SUVs and pickups equipped with 6.2L V8 engines due to a manufacturing defect involving the connecting rod and/or crankshaft that can lead to catastrophic engine failures in some cases. The recall also followed a NHTSA investigation after the agency received numerous owner questionnaires from GM customers alleging engine failures. The potentially costly recall comes as Nissan begins to execute its latest turnaround plan to return to profitability after a significant decline in sales in 2024, including a failed merger with Honda Motor Co. earlier this year. In November 2024, Nissan announced it was cutting 9,000 jobs after posting a 90% year over year drop in operating profit in the first half of fiscal year 2024. Earlier this year, Nissan's failed merger with Honda led to the ousting of several top executives and appointment of new leaders to guide the company's turnaround. In May, Nissan announced a major cost-savings initiative that called for seven plant closures and slashing of another 11,000 jobs in an effort to generate $3.4 billion in savings as it looks to regain its footing. Nissan Sues Its Own Dealership For Failure To Pay $3.4 Million In Vehicle Deliveries
Nissan North America has had enough of being jerked around by one New Jersey Infiniti dealership and its floor lender, so now it is suing for damages and looking for an order allowing it to repossess all of the unsold vehicles the dealership hasn't surrendered yet. The federal lawsuit says that Infiniti of Englewood failed to pay Nissan NA over $3.4 million for 64 vehicles it delivered to the dealer last fall, according to Automotive News. If you know anything about New Jersey, you know you've got to kick up to the guy upstairs. That's part of our thing. The dealership apparently sold 61 out of the 64 vehicles by the time the complaint was filed on March 27. In the lawsuit, the Japanese automaker said the store "failed to use the sales proceeds to repay Nissan." It also alleges a breach of contract and unjust enrichment. It also alleges the dealership failed to pay the delinquency charges assessed for the nonpayment. Read more: Everrati's Electric Porsche 911 RSR Has Me Driving Into The Future With Open Arms Here's more of what the lawsuit says, from Auto News: "In the three months preceding delivery" Infiniti of Englewood "represented to Nissan in writing that it was financially sound and adequately capitalized, including maintaining sufficient net working capital and net worth and satisfactory floorplan financing arrangements," the complaint said. Nissan North America isn't just going for the dealer, either. It also alleges the co-defendant — Keystone Auto Lending — is contractually liable for not paying Nissan. Well, as it turns out, both Infiniti of Englewood and Keystone Lending are owned by the same person, the complaint says. It describes Charles Caronia (a real New Jersey name if I've ever heard one) as the owner of the dealership and the sole principal of the lender. For legal reasons I cannot understand, Caronia is not named personally as a defendant, but it does say he was "funding his own dealership and caused the breaches by both the dealer and Keystone," Automotive News reports. Man, there's always something going on with Nissan dealers. We've told you about how a dealer owner was suing the Japanese automaker for opening a new store too close to it. We've also talked about North Carolina filing over 400 charges against Nissan dealership employees, and who can forget the time Nissan asked dealers to lose money on sales by using discounts? The Future of the GT-R May Not be so Uncertain
Nissan has closed the order book for its iconic R35-generation GT-R after 18 years of production. The automaker's Japanese website noted it received all the orders it could handle through the model's final production, putting a final nail in the legendary sports car's coffin. Despite closed orders, Nissan hasn't officially announced a successor to the R35 GT-R. However, Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer for Nissan North America, Ponz Pandikuthira told Motor Authority at the 2024 New York International Auto Show that the GT-R nameplate won't die. Nissan hasn't yet defined a powertrain for a next-generation GT-R, likely named the R36, with Pandikuthira noting that the automaker is waiting for technology to advance. Still, he promised that performance in near-race conditions won't be compromised, even with a fully-electric powertrain, as Formula E will serve as a test environment. This won't be the first time GT-R fans have had to wait patiently for a new generation. The Skyline Kenmeri GT-R ended production in 1973, and the succeeding R32-chassis GT-R didn't hit the streets until 1989. While no GT-R variant was produced during this 16-year gap, the Skyline lineage continued with models like the C210, R30, and R31. It's worth noting that Nissan's confirmation of next-generation GT-R development during last year's New York International Auto Show occurred when the automaker's finances weren't as alarming. In the first nine months of 2024, Nissan's profits decreased from 478.4 billion yen ($3.23 billion) during the same time the previous year to 64 billion yen ($435.2 million). A Nissan merger with Honda failed to come to fruition, but a deal could be back on the table after Nissan's CEO stepped down this month. Pierre Loing, Nissan's head of global product, told Top Gear in September that regulations are the only reason the company is ending production of the R35 GT-R. Nissan was originally hoping to sell the R35 GT-R well into the next decade. 'It's been on sale for 17 years and we'd love to make it another 17 years, but the regulator gives us some trouble!,' Loing said. In Europe, the R35 GT-R fails to meet noise and emissions regulations, while Australian regulators didn't give it a passing crash safety grade. Stricter emissions in the US for 2025 compounded the R35 GT-R's troubles. Nissan's financial struggles may mean less money for R36 research and development, with more funds going toward sustaining mainline models, such as the Rogue and Altima. The automaker's head of global product said that solid-state batteries could aid an all-electric R36 GT-R's development, noting that the technology would remedy current issues plaguing electric sports cars, like battery weight and overheating hindering performance. Still, Nissan has clarified that they won't have solid-state battery technology ready until 2028. The Japanese automaker wrote the following farewell statement on its website regarding final R35 orders: 'We have received many orders for the Nissan GT-R, and we have now finished accepting orders for the planned production quantity. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our many customers for their patronage over the years since its release in 2007.'
