Vaibhav Suryavanshi blitz fires India to victory
Fresh from their exploits in the IPL, young guns Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre shone with the bat after a tidy bowling performance as India defeated England by six wickets in the first Youth ODI of their Under-19 tour here on Friday. India's bowling unit, led by the spin duo of Kanishk Chouhan (three for 20) and Mohamed Enaan (two for 37), along with seamers R.S. Ambrish (two for 24) and Henil Patel (two for 41), combined superbly to bowl England out for 174 in 42.2 overs despite a fighting fifty by Rocky Flintoff (56 from 90 balls). Chasing 175, India got off to a blazing start courtesy Suryavanshi (48, 18b, 3x4, 5x6) and Mhatre (21), who raced to 70 without loss in just seven overs. After their departure, vice-captain Abhigyan Kundu sealed the chase with 45 not out (34b, 4x4, 1x6) as India won in just 24 overs. Donning the iconic No. 18 jersey, the 14-year-old Suryavanshi, who had lit up IPL 2025 with 252 runs in seven matches for Rajasthan Royals, including a record-breaking 35-ball hundred against Gujarat Titans, looked in ominous touch. He hammered three sixes off Jack Home in the sixth over and tore apart James Minto to reach 48 off just 18 balls. Graduation ceremonies across the United States of America and Canada are in full swing, and Indian students are making sure their celebrations are both personal and memorable. Among the many convocation videos going viral, one clip from Saskatchewan Polytechnic in Canada is capturing widespread attention on the Internet, and sparking conversation online. Rahul Chhillar, an Indian student graduating from the institution, created a moment during his convocation that many will never forget. As he walked on stage to collect his degree, he turned toward the mic and loudly chanted, 'Bol Shankar Bhagwan Ki Jai… Jai Shambhu!' The unexpected chant, an ode to Lord Shiva, took everyone by surprise, especially the faculty on stage. But within seconds, his words echoed back from the audience, with several fellow Indians joining in. Article content If recent history tells us anything, though, it's that when you're picking 18th overall, you're far more likely to get an elite defenceman than a franchise-altering centre. In the last decade, arguably the best three NHLers taken with the No. 18 pick were Thomas Chabot (2015), Thomas Harley (2019) and Lian Bichsel (2022). All of them were defencemen. Article content Article content The Flames are well-stocked with young blueliners, so it's certainly not an area of need, but they've insisted they're going to take the best player available when it's time to make their pick. Barlow was third in the OHL in playoff scoring, with 14 goals and 19 assists in 21 games. Jets fans are thrilled about his potential, and landing a player with this sort of offensive upside at No. 18 would be a coup for the Flames. Article content The Flames have talked about following the Dallas model for their retool, and they could do a whole lot worse than drafting at No. 18 the way the Stars have managed (twice) over the last decade. Bicshel is 6-foot-7, weighs in at 231 lbs. and played in 38 regular season games and 18 more in the playoffs this season. And he's still only 21 years old. The Flames are well-stocked with young defencemen but are consistent in their declarations that they'll take the best player available with the No. 18 pick. If that's a guy with any of Bichsel's attributes, you'd be crazy not to take him.

Patriots rookie reveals what made him appreciate jersey number change
New England Patriots rookie wide receiver Kyle Williams didn't get his first choice in jersey numbers because both of his first two options were already taken. He originally wore the No. 1 jersey at Washington State, and he wore No. 2 at UNLV. Second-year wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk is currently wearing the No. 1 jersey, and the No. 2 jersey was already taken by veteran edge rusher Harold Landry III. That ultimately led to Williams receiving the No. 18 jersey, which has a long history in New England. That number belonged to all-time great special-teams legend Matthew Slater. ESPN's Mike Reiss wrote: "Williams wore No. 1 at Washington State and No. 2 at Nevada, which were already taken by Ja'Lynn Polk and Landry. Williams has quickly grown to appreciate No. 18, in part because of its history in New England. "'The legendary Matthew Slater,' he said, adding that he hopes to live up to Slater's example." Following in the footsteps of one of the greatest players in franchise history would be a great path for a young and promising player like Williams. He is looking to make an impact as a rookie in a Patriots wide receivers room that was one of the worst performing units last season. However, they have made strides with the addition of not only Williams, but they've also signed four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs and veteran wideout Mack Hollins. The motivation that comes from wearing the No. 18 jersey should push the young wide receiver to give his all and take nothing for granted.
