Commanders announce retirement of Art Monk's No. 81 in touching video
Honoring greatness on November 2🔗 Washington Commanders managing partner Josh Harris has done it again. On Tuesday, the Commanders announced they are retiring legendary wide receiver Art Monk's No. 81 jersey. Monk will be honored during the Week 9 Sunday night game against the Seattle Seahawks, which takes place on Nov. 2. A contingent led by Harris, team executive and Redskins legend Doug Williams, team president Mark Clouse, and some of Monk's former teammates, such as Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders, arrived at Monk's home to surprise him. Washington's contingent and Monk's family members all wore No. 81 burgundy t-shirts with Monk's number on the back. Here's the touching tribute video: One number. Forever Monk's number 81 will officially be retired this season Monk was a first-round pick by Washington out of Syracuse in the 1980 NFL draft. He played his first 14 seasons with the Redskins, before finishing his career with stints in New York (Jets) and Philadelphia. Monk finished with 940 career receptions, 12,721 receiving yards, 68 touchdowns, was a two-time All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowl selection. Monk was also a part of three Super Bowl championship teams. At the time of his retirement, Monk was the NFL's all-time career leader in receptions. While his numbers have since been eclipsed multiple times, Monk's greatness is often overlooked. In fact, the Pro Football Hall of Fame committee foolishly made him wait for years to be enshrined in Canton, Ohio. When he finally made it, Monk was inducted into the Hall of Fame alongside fellow Redskins legend Darrell Green.

81 days until the Texans' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 81?
81 days until the Texans' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 81? Jayden Higgins or Owen Daniels? Which player comes out on top? The Houston Texans are less than 100 days away from kicking off the 2025 season in Los Angeles against the Rams at SoFi Stadium and we're counting down the days until a victory ensues on the west coast. Texans Wire will each day tell you which player has worn the number of the day leading up to kickoff and pick the player who ensured the number best during their time at NRG Stadium. As for today, let's take a look at who has won No. 81 since the inaugural season in 2002. Texans players to wear No. 81 No. 81 currently belongs to wide receiver and second-round pick Jayden Higgins, whom the Texans believe can be a quality starting vertical option after two promising years at Iowa State. The 6-foot-4 pass-catcher is an explosive athlete who makes up for his overall route-running skills with strength after contact and solid hands. He's also been consistent, hauling in at least six touchdown receptions over his two years in Ames. In 2024, Higgins took over games, guiding the Cyclones to their first 11-win season in program history. Not only did he average over 16 yards per reception, but his 1,183 receiving yards ranked top five among Big 12 targets. Jaylin Noel, the Texans' third-round pick, finished with 1,194 yards. Higgins very well could be the greatest player in franchise history to don the number down the line, but there's a right answer entering the summer. It's been the only answer since he left the team in 2013. WR Jayden Higgins (2025) TE Eric Saubert (2023) TE Khale Warring (2019-2020) TE Anthony Denham (2014) TE Owen Daniels (2006-2013) TE Matt Murphy (2004-2005) TE Atnaf Harris (2002) Best Player: Owen Daniels Of course the greatest tight end in franchise history was listed as the top name. After being drafted out of Wisconsin in the fourth round, few players were as consistent as Daniels in the Gary Kubiak era on offense. Daniels was more than a quality receiver. He was a physical blocker in the run game and offered upside on special teams. In the passing game, Daniels added more of his fair share of numbers to keep the chains moving. In 2008, he posted a career-high 862 receiving yards and 70 catches, earning a Pro Bowl nod for his efforts. In 2012, Daniels made the Pro Bowl once more after posting six touchdowns and 716 receiving yards. While he won't go down as the greatest Texans' pass-catcher, Daniels will be remembered as an influential target in helping the franchise complete the revival and punch their ticket to the postseason for the first time in 2009. A loyal follower of Kubiak, Daniels joined the former Texans head coach in Baltimore (2014) and later Denver (2015), helping the Broncos win Super Bowl 50 over the Carolina Panthers before calling it a career. Houston history will remember Daniels well. Entering the 2025 season, he ranks third all-time in receptions (479), targets (602), receiving yards (4617), and touchdowns (29) while ranking seventh in yards per reception (12.0).

Here's your first look at rookie WRs Jayden Higgins & Jaylin Noel in full Texans uniform
Here's your first look at rookie WRs Jayden Higgins & Jaylin Noel in full Texans uniform There's a pair of new weapons in the Houston Texans' offense this season after the two-time AFC South champions doubled down in Cyclone territory to draft Iowa State wideouts Jayden Higgins and Jayiln Noel on Day 2 of last month's draft. Higgins should be featured early on as a rookie, complementing Nico Collins and Christian Kirk as someone who can make plays on the outside as a vertical option. Noel, who likely will be limited in the slot, should eventually become the No. 3 target in the offense and a reliable option on special teams. The Cyclone Bros. won't suit up for their first regular-season game until Sept. 7 but Higgins and Noel were one of the many rookies to participate in the NFLPA Rookie Premiere so fans got a first look at him in Steel Blue home atire. The Texans shared a couple of photos of Higgins and Noel in full uniform from the Rookie Premiere and they look ready to take on a big role in 2025. Higgins also shared some photos of himself in uniform on the X platform, giving fans another look at his No. 81 jersey. Noel didn't waste time, either, making sure to pop in front of the camera in No. 82. The NFLPA posted a photo of the whole group at the Rookie Premiere, including Las Vegas Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty, New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart, Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward and Jacksonville Jaguars weapon Travis Hunter. Higgins can be spotted on the left side in the front row, while Higgins is dead center in the third row.

Packers first-round pick Matthew Golden to wear No. 81 uniform
Green Bay Packers first-round pick Matthew Golden was assigned the No. 81 uniform by the team on Friday. It's a big aesthetic change for Golden, who wore No. 2 in high school, as a sophomore at Houston and as a junior at Texas. He wore No. 10 as a freshman at Houston. Backup quarterback Malik Willis currently holds the No. 2 uniform. Jordan Love wears No. 10. It's unclear if Golden asked for the No. 2 uniform. Willis, who is entering a contract year in 2025, could be unable or unwilling to make the change. Advertisement Numbers in the 80s are traditional wide receiver numbers, but single digits and numbers in the teens have become more and more common as the league expanded options for various positions. Julian Hicks also wears the No. 81, but a number change should be coming for the undrafted free agent. Josiah Deguara previously wore the No. 81 between 2020 and 2023. Super Bowl XXXI MVP Desmond Howard also wore No. 81. Among the notable players to wear No. 81 for the Packers: Geronimo Allison, Andrew Quarless, Koren Robinson, Tyrone Davis, Perry Kemp, Rich McGeorge and Marv Fleming.
