Cowboys Standouts Named Among NFL's Top Homegrown Duos
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. While they have made significant upgrades through trades and free agency over the years, the Dallas Cowboys have also done a fine job creating talent in-house. Ahead of the 2025 season, two key members of the roster received high praise amid their emergence as star-level talents. Back in 2020, luck fell the Cowboys' way when wide receiver CeeDee Lamb slid in the draft. Dallas managed to nab him at pick No. 17, and since then, he's blossomed into a core piece for the franchise. Lamb has racked up at least 1,000 yards in each of the last four seasons and landed All-Pro honors in 2023 after leading the league in receptions (135). Fast forward to 2021, and the Cowboys secured a pillar for the other side of the ball. Following a strong college career at Penn State, Dallas drafted Micah Parsons 12th overall. He was brought in to raise the Cowboys' floor on defense, but has done so much more than that. Parsons has developed into one of the league's top defensive stars, finishing top three in Defensive Player of the Year voting three times in four seasons. Parsons and Lamb made an appearance on this list, securing the No. 1 spot. "Parsons entered the NFL from Penn State with plenty of deserved attention, but even the most avid Nittany Lions supporters likely didn't expect him to be this good at the next level. The true transformation into a game-wrecking pass rusher occurred once the Cowboys committed to playing him on the ball, sacrificing his sideline-to-sideline range in favor of sending him on repeated quarterback hunts," Shook wrote. "Lamb has been a star since his days at Oklahoma, yet he remained available until the middle of the 2020 NFL Draft's first round. Dallas happily scooped him up at No. 17 overall and immediately bestowed great expectations upon him by handing him the franchise's venerated No. 88 jersey. He's done nothing but meet those expectations, even when the circumstances surrounding him haven't been ideal." Last year, Dallas inked Lamb to a four-year extension worth $136 million. Parsons is now due for a new contract, and based on his production and impact, could end up landing a record-setting deal on par with that of Pittsburgh Steelers star TJ Watt. Following a down year in 2024, Lamb and Parsons will attempt to help the Cowboys return to prominence in the NFC this season. For more Dallas Cowboys and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

NASCAR: Winners, Losers from the Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway, led vy Shane van Gisbergen
The regular season portion of the NASCAR schedule in 2025 is flying by, with Sunday delivering the 20th points race of the season. On an eventful Sunday afternoon at Sonoma Raceway, the Toyota / Save Mart 350 delivered plenty of intriguing results. Let's jump into our winners and losers from Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Sonoma. Advertisement Winner: Shane van Gisbergen's road dominance continues Credit: Stan Szeto-Imagn Images A week after he swept the road course races in both the Xfinity Series and Cup Series at Chicago, Shane van Gisbergen nearly did the same this weekend. He took the pole position for both races, finishing just behind Connor Zilisch in a great battle to the finish on Saturday afternoon. With a lot more on the line in the Cup Series, SVG utterly dominated. Even when he pitted, the No. 88 came out near the front of the field. Sunday marked SVG's third win this season, all three coming in the last five weeks, and he picked up an additional playoff point with a Stage 2 victory. Related: NASCAR Xfinity results from Sonoma Raceway Loser: Denny Hamlin's rough Sunday Credit: Stan Szeto-Imagn Images Whatever the No. 11 team did to the car for Sunday's race failed miserably. Starting 16th on the grid, Hamlin's position dropped like a rock in Stage 1, and he spent the majority of Stage 2 outside the top 30. He was a non-factor, getting passed by drivers who pitted after him. Hamlin has had success at Sonoma Raceway in the past, but the No. 11 car just didn't give him any shot at being competitive on Sunday. He also took a pit-road penalty on the final stage. Fortunately for Hamlin, next week takes him to Dover and he's fared very well (9.0 average finishing position) there in the Next Gen era. Advertisement Related: NASCAR results today, stage results from Sonoma for Cup Series Winner: Ross Chastain's playoff point strategy Credit: Daniel Bartel-Imagn Images Ross Chastain's crew chief, Phil Surgen, said early in Stage 1 that it was evident they didn't have a realistic chance of winning at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday. So, with a playoff spot already locked up, the No. 1 team rightfully pivoted to its second-best option. Chastain stayed out during Stage 1, securing 10 points and a desperately needed playoff point. This pushed Chastain into a tie for 10th in playoff points, and the point total also solidified his position somewhat in the regular-season standings. Advertisement Related: NASCAR points standings after Sonoma Loser: A.J. Allmendinger's one costly spin Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images The only path to the NASCAR playoffs for A.J. Allmendinger is a win. He has now had three great opportunities over the last five weeks, with road courses catering to his specialty. After finishing 13th at Mexico City and then 6th in the Chicago Street Race, Allmendinger took himself out of the mix on Sunday in the Save Mart 350. On Turn 11 of Lap 31, Allmendinger lost control of the back of the car and spun around. It dropped him from fifth place to outside the top 30. While he finished relatively well, that spin likely prevented him from a top-five finish on Sunday. He finished the day 18th. Advertisement Winner: Chase Briscoe Credit: Stan Szeto-Imagn Images At this point, we might have to start focusing on the non-SVG drivers at road courses. While Chase Briscoe didn't record the win on Sunday, he was clearly the second-best driver on the course and there was a gap between him and the next driver. Sunday's race marked his third top-10 finish since Kansas, including four top-five finishes. After being the 'underperformer' at Joe Gibbs Racing, Briscoe is on a hot streak over the last two months and his playoff spot is already clinched. Loser: Carson Hocevar Credit: Stan Szeto-Imagn Images No one is happier than Carson Hocevar to be done with road courses for a while. The 22-year-old placed 34th at Mexico City (9 points) and then took out multiple drivers in a DNF 35th-place finish at Chicago last week. While he didn't cause any wrecks this week, he did spend the majority of his Sunday afternoon at the very back of the field. Making the playoffs on points is completely out of the question now for Hocevar and while a win could get him in, oval courses will give some of his peers opportunities at revenge for his recent racing tactics. Advertisement Related: Carson Hocevar reveals odd approach to friendships with NASCAR drivers Winner: Bubba Wallace's stage strategy pays off Credit: Stan Szeto-Imagn Images Bubba Wallace came into Sonoma Raceway knowing there was little chance of getting a win, especially after starting 30th on the grid. So, the No. 23 team took full advantage of the stage points system. By holding off on pit stops until immediately after Stages 1 and 2, Wallace picked up 15 points (the second-most stage points) on the day. Those points proved especially crucial since he was knocked off the track by Kyle Busch, which hurt his final finishing position on Sunday. Advertisement Loser: Ryan Blaney's bad luck day Credit: Stan Szeto-Imagn Images On speed and driving alone, Ryan Blaney should've had a top-10 finish at Sonoma. He overcame being knocked off course by Chase Briscoe, which dropped him outside the top 10. He climbed his way back to grab a few stage points, but then was knocked off the track by Chris Buescher and got stuck. Blaney really wasn't at fault for either incident, but both took a massive toll on his overall points total today. In the end, he finished 36th. Related Headlines

Hometown hero Kyle Larson looks to defend his Sonoma title
If you enjoy racing at NASCAR's snaking road courses, you have come to the right place over the past five races. For the third time in that quintet, drivers will mix in plenty of right-hand turns to go along with the usual left-handers when the Cup Series travels to its lone stop in California for the Toyota/Save Mart 350, the 110-lap race at Sonoma Raceway. Kyle Larson is surely thrilled to be back in the Golden State's wine country -- and not just because he hails from Elk Grove, just 90 minutes away from the 12-turn track. The race's defending winner beat Martin Truex Jr. and Chris Buescher over the final 51 caution-free laps a year ago. However, the 2021 Cup champ has not had much go his way since his history-making efforts in running at Indianapolis and Charlotte on the same Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. The hometown hero at the 1.99-mile track has run poorly since doing the "Double," wrecking in both the Indy 500 and Coke 600. In the seven races starting in Charlotte, his average finish is 17.6 with his best showing being fifth at Michigan. But the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports driver is safely in the playoffs, of course. His three wins tie him with Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell for the most, and he is a two-time winner in Napa Valley's vineyard region. Kyle Larson However, it was Shane van Gisbergen who sipped sweet success Sunday for the second time in the three Cup races held on the Chicago Street Course. In the first one there in 2023, the No. 88 Trackhouse Racing driver recorded career win No. 1. He was victorious in last year's Xfinity race but finished last in the Cup event following a crash. Last weekend, the New Zealander earned the pole in both races and scored two victories. He became the first driver to win from the pole on both Saturday and Sunday since Kyle Busch did it in 2016 at Indianapolis. "This joint, it changed my life," said SVG, whose three wins in 33 races make for a fine start in Cup racing and puts him with the most wins by any foreign- born driver. With Chicago's future in real question -- the three-race agreement is over -- SVG is one of many drivers who would relish a fourth in the Second City, though San Diego may be the next stop on the streets. In the playoff chase, SVG's win slots him fourth in the postseason lineup with seven races remaining, but with 12 winners locked into the playoffs, three of the final four positions have tightened up. The first winless driver, 13th-place Tyler Reddick, holds a vast 104-point lead over Alex Bowman in 14th. And while a victory might be expected of Reddick in his No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota, none of his eight wins have come at any of the next seven venues. Bowman leads Buescher by just four points, while Bubba Wallace, who finished 28th Sunday after being spun twice, holds the final playoff spot in 16th by only two points over Ryan Preece. It is then a 41-point drop-off to 18th-place AJ Allmendinger with 400 points. Larson (2024, 2021), Busch (2015, 2008) and lame duck Trackhouse driver Daniel Suarez (2022) will be the only active competitors in Sunday's field who have taken home Sonoma's checkered flag. Shane van Gisbergen wins NASCAR Cup race in Chicago, full results
The NASCAR Cup Series arrived at the Chicago Street Course, producing expected chaos. Michael McDowell won Stage 1 while Ryan Blaney won Stage 2; however, neither driver was up front when it mattered the most at the end of the day. Instead, it was a Trackhouse Racing driver who swept the weekend in the Windy City. Shane van Gisbergen and the No. 88 team for Trackhouse Racing won the Grant Park 165 at the Chicago Street Course, earning their second victory of the 2025 Cup Series season. Van Gisbergen flipped the stages and maintained the lead as the fastest car after McDowell's mechanical issues in Stage 2. The driver of the No. 88 car now has two road course victories in 2025, putting him fifth in the playoff standings with seven races left. Van Gisbergen has already established himself as one of the greatest NASCAR road course drivers of all time, and another win at the Chicago Street Course only validates his dominance.
