Taron Egerton thinks he's ‘too messy' to play James Bond: ‘It would be wasted on me'
Shaken, not stirred. Taron Egerton has dropped out of the race to become the next James Bond as Amazon MGM Studios eyes their new international man of mystery. During a recent interview with Collider, the British actor admitted that he wouldn't be a 'good choice' to play the next 007 after Daniel Craig, 57, gave up the iconic mantle following 2021's 'No Time to Die.' However, Egerton clarified that his opposition to playing the next Bond doesn't mean he doesn't 'have aspirations and plans' to star in 'more commercial' movies in the future. 9 Taron Egerton attends the 'Smoke' premiere during the 2025 Tribeca Festival on June 12, 2025, in New York City. 'But James Bond is quite an undertaking, and I think, one, as far as I'm aware, nobody's asking me to do it,' the 'Rocketman' star added. 'But also, it's possibly not quite the thing that would make me happiest.' 'I do think it's a big old undertaking, it kind of consumes your life, a role like that,' Egerton concluded. 9 Taron Egerton in the Apple TV+ series 'Smoke.' Although he did not appear in the 2021 prequel 'The King's Man,' Vaughn teased 'Kingsman 3' and Egerton's possible return during an event back in 2023. As for 007, Egerton wouldn't be the first actor to distance himself from the role. 9 Taron Egerton in the Apple TV+ series 'Smoke.' Apple TV+ 'Crazy Rich Asians' star Henry Golding, 38, said that playing James Bond is 'every actor's kind of nightmare' during an interview with People last month. 'Why can't they bring out more agents or more 00s? I think that would be so much more fun, because there just aren't the restraints and the expectation,' he said. 'Maybe I'm just a p—y. I don't know,' Golding added. 'This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor,' he added. 9 Taron Egerton as Elton John in 2019's 'Rocketman.' ©Paramount/Courtesy Everett Collection / Everett Collection Advertisement While the lead role has not been filled, the rumor mill has been in overdrive with suggestions on which actors should be in contention. Brosnan, 72, also commended producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. British contender to play James Bond insists he ‘wouldn't be good at it'
Popular British star Taron Egerton has downplayed suggestions he could take on the currently vacant role of James Bond, claiming he 'wouldn't be good at it'. All eyes are still on lists of bookies' odds and fan favourites while we wait to see who will inherit 007's licence to kill after Daniel Craig retired from the role following 2021's No Time to Die. But Egerton, 35, who is easy to visualise in the role after his star-making turn in the Kinsgman franchise, thinks he's too 'messy' for the part. The three-time Bafta nominee instead believes there are 'so many cool, younger actors' who would be better suited to the coveted role. Asked about the possibility of playing Bond, he told Collider: 'I don't think I'm a good choice for it. I think I'm too messy for that. 'I think I'm not – I really love James Bond and particularly Daniel Craig's tenure. But I think I wouldn't be good at it, and I think there's so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it. I think it would be wasted on me, probably.' Rocketman actor Egerton, who picked up a Golden Globe for his performance in the Elton John biopic, also observed that leading the Bond franchise is 'quite an undertaking'. He continued: 'That's not to say that I don't have aspirations and plans and also that I wouldn't be interested in doing something that's more commercial, because of course I would. I think I'm a period in my life where I've been probably following the things that speak to me on a creative level a little bit more, but, you know, I'm sure I won't feel that way forever.' The star also quipped that 'as far as I'm aware, nobody's asking me to do it'. Suggesting that this opportunity or similar is something he has weighed up before, Egerton was also realistic about its downsides, saying that playing Bond is 'possibly not quite the thing that would make me happiest'. 'I do think it's a big old undertaking, it kind of consumes your life, a role like that.' Egerton is currently promoting new indie crime thriller She Rides Shotgun, an adaptation of Jordan Harper's award-winning novel, after starring in Netflix's second most watched movie of all time, Carry-On. After well over a year of fevered speculation – ever since he was falsely reported to have officially landed the 007 gig, Aaron Taylor-Johnson has remained one of the front-runners to play Bond next. Fresh odds from Ladbrokes on Wednesday had him at 8/11, making him the first odds-on candidate in their eyes to be the next 007, after his appearance in 28 Years Later with Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes. Behind him is another hot favourite Callum Turner, next to be seen in A24 supernatural rom-com Eternity with Elisabeth Olsen and Miles Teller, and The Gentlemen's Theo James, both of whom are on 5/1. Slow Horses star and new Mr Darcy Jack Lowden is 6/1, and both Harris Dickinson and Tom Holland are 8/1. Egerton is currently 66/1 the bookmakers confirmed to Metro, having been bumped from 50/1 as recently as Friday. He started the year as 80/1 to be the next Bond, the same price as Sir David Beckham. His shortest odds were 25/1 just after he picked up his Golden Globe in 2020. Long-time producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson made the surprising move of ceding complete creative control of the 007 film franchise to their producing partners at Amazon MGM Studios earlier this year – for a rumoured extra $1billion (£747.5m). Since that change of power, things are moving a little more quickly with Amazon already announcing Harry Potter's David Heyman and Spider-Man's Amy Pascal as the new producers shepherding the franchise. More Trending In June, Oscar-nominated Denis Villeneuve was announced as the director for Bond 26 – with Broccoli later sharing her support from afar for the 'fantastic filmmaker'. 'I'm thrilled he's going to be doing it,' she added to Mark Kermode during an appearance on his podcast Kermode on Film. He's previously had success with his Dune adaptation, Blade Runner 2049 and 2016 alien movie Arrival, which earned him a best director nod. With key figures in the team aboard, it seems casting can now finally begin in earnest. Got a story? From 'The Amateur' to 'Zombies 4,' 10 movies you need to stream right now
Malek. Rami Malek. After going the James Bond villain route for "No Time to Die," the Oscar winner becomes a secret agent in his own right in the spy thriller "The Amateur," one of several new movies hitting your favorite streaming services. Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Peacock, HBO Max and more offer up theatrical releases finally coming home, like the new André Holland/Gemma Chan drama "The Actor," plus original fare like a surprise Anthony Ramos/Naomi Scott sci-fi flick you didn't know you needed. Here are 10 new and notable movies you can stream right now: 'The Actor' Based on the Donald E. Westlake crime novel "Memory," the period drama stars André Holland as a man stranded in a strange town and suffering from amnesia. He finds himself drawn to a kind woman (Gemma Chan), but when he discovers he's a New York actor, he attempts to go home in a movie awash in ethereal atmosphere and noir-ish style. Where to watch: Hulu. 'The Amateur' It's like an action thriller that forgot to come out in 2003. When his wife (Rachel Brosnahan) is killed in an international terrorist attack, a CIA decoder (Rami Malek) goes after the people responsible in a throwback to the days of "The Recruit" and the "Bourne" movies. Where to watch: Hulu. 'Apocalypse in the Tropics' The gripping documentary chronicles the rise of evangelical power in Brazilian politics in recent years, focused on the tumult caused by televangelist Silas Malafaia and controversial president Jair Bolsonaro. It's also a sobering watch given how certain aspects – from social-media propaganda to a destructive insurrection – hit way too close to home. Where to watch: Netflix. 'Drop' This modern Hitchcockian thriller doesn't take itself too seriously. Meghann Fahy ("Sirens") plays a widowed mom getting back in the love game. She meets up with a first date (Brandon Sklenar) at a high-rise restaurant, but is soon menaced with memes sent to her phone threatening her son if she doesn't kill the dude. Where to watch: Peacock. 'Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story' Are you "Jaws"-d out yet? For those still celebrating the iconic blockbuster's 50th anniversary, this documentary is essential viewing. Director Steven Spielberg goes deep on the exhausting and "terrifying" process of making his legendary shark movie, and filmmakers such as J.J. Abrams, James Cameron and Jordan Peele discuss its influence and legacy. Where to watch: Hulu, Disney+. 'Long Distance' The definition of a "dumped movie" is a shelved theatrical release with a new title and no marketing dropped suddenly on a streaming service. That said, this sci-fi film is a pretty fun time, with Anthony Ramos as a miner who crash-lands on a dangerous alien planet and needs to rescue an injured stranger (Naomi Scott) before his oxygen runs out. Where to watch: Hulu. 'Madea's Destination Wedding' Tyler Perry's don't-call-her-elderly firebrand Madea returns in yet another comedy. Madea once again is chaotic as she, friends and extended family members attend the sudden Bahamian wedding of her grandniece (Diamond White), while the father of the bride (also Perry) is the stressed-out soul trying to keep it together. Where to watch: Netflix. 'Opus' This thriller stars Ayo Edebiri ("The Bear") as a young journalist invited to the event of the year: A mega pop star (John Malkovich) hosts influential folks at his remote compound to hear his first album since going off the grid 30 years earlier. The cult horror flick doesn't totally deliver on a great premise, but Malkovich is a hoot as a cross between Davids Bowie and Koresh. Where to watch: HBO Max. 'Push' The one thing very pregnant realtor Natalie (Alicia Sanz) doesn't need is a bunch of no-shows to a cursed house she's trying to sell. And the one guy who does show up? A psycho killer! Raúl Castillo plays the sadistic guy who ruthlessly chases her – a situation that goes truly awry when she goes into labor – in a twist on the supernaturally tinged slasher. Where to watch: Shudder. 'Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires' Just when you thought there weren't enough zombies, werewolves and aliens in this song-and-dance franchise, along come more monsters. Now college kids, young couple Zed (Milo Manheim) and Addison (Meg Donnelly) find a way to bring together the warring factions of Daywalkers and Vampires for everybody's well-being. Where to watch: Disney+.
