Director Jon Watts Opens Up About Why He Left Marvel's THE FANTASTIC FOUR Project — GeekTyrant

Jon Watts is no stranger to big swings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He directed all three of Tom Holland's Spider-Man films, culminating with No Way Home , a global juggernaut that brought together multiple generations of Spider-Man and nearly hit the $2 billion mark. So when Marvel tapped him to reboot Fantastic Fou , it made sense. But just months before pre-production kicked into gear, Watts quietly stepped away, and now we know why. While speaking at the Mediterrane Film Festival, Watts finally opened up about the real reason he dropped out. It wasn't because of creative differences or a scheduling conflict. It was burnout, specifically, the kind brought on by trying to make No Way Home during peak pandemic chaos. Watts explained: 'The emotional strain of having to go through all of those COVID protocols while also trying to make something creative while also trying to make sure that your cast and crew were all safe — literally, people could've died if you did things wrong — that and the postproduction process was very difficult. 'When you're doing [visual effects work], there's a whole international component to it where you're using vendors from all over the world, and the supply chain had been interrupted because of COVID. It was really hard to get effects done in a traditional way.' Making a Marvel movie is already like steering a freight train through a needle, but doing it under strict health guidelines, that's a different beast entirely. And No Way Home wasn't just another sequel, it was a multiversal event with a sprawling cast, a visual effects gauntlet, and a story that had to emotionally land across three separate franchises. So by the time Marvel came calling again, Watts had to take stock of where he was mentally and creatively. 'I am out of gas. The COVID layer on top of making a giant movie layer, I knew I didn't have what it would've taken to make that movie great. I was just out of steam, so I just needed to take some time to recover. 'Everyone at Marvel totally understood. They had been through it with me as well, so they knew how hard and draining that experience has been; in the end, very satisfying, but at some point, if you can't do it at the level that you feel like you need to for it to be great, then it's better to not do it.' The pressure to always jump to the next big thing, especially when it's something as legacy-heavy as Fantastic Four, can be overwhelming. Watts prioritized his mental and creative health over momentum, which I can respect and appreciate. Since stepping away, Watts worked on the Star Wars series Skeleton Crew . Meanwhile, Matt Shakman ( WandaVision ) took the reins on Fantastic Four: First Steps , which finally hits theaters July 25. Watts says watching the film from the outside will be a 'totally surreal experience.' He won't be returning for the next Spider-Man either as Brand New Day , due in 2026, will be directed by Shang-Chi 's Destin Daniel Cretton, but most recently, he co-wrote and produced Final Destination: Bloodlines . Sometimes the best career move is knowing when to sit one out.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 brings back Tom Holland's iconic red and blue suit; fans can't keep calm

Insomniac Games has unveiled a new fan-favourite costume in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 for PlayStation 5, the "Red and Blue Suit," a design that closely mirrors Tom Holland 's final Spider-Man look from 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'. The suit, which first appeared in the closing moments of 'No Way Home', was crafted by Peter Parker after parting ways with Stark technology. It was also said to be a visual nod to the suits worn by previous Spider-Men, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield while introducing a fresh, polished finish unique to Holland's version .According to reports, the players can unlock the new suit upon reaching level 58. Unlike other in-game outfits, this one remains in its pure, cinematic form with no alternate styles, thus staying true to the MCU design. Beyond the game, Holland's Spider-Man is set to return to the big screen in 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'. In a major casting reveal, 'The Punisher' star Jon Bernthal will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, reprising his role as Frank Castle. His involvement in the film hints at a darker, more grounded tone for Spider-Man's next chapter. The film will see Holland reprise his role as Peter Parker, alongside returning cast members Zendaya (MJ) and Jacob Batalon (Ned). 'Stranger Things' breakout star Sadie Sink has also joined the ensemble, though her character remains under wraps. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? Jon Bernthal's PUNISHER Will Appear in SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY

No one on Earth-616 remembers Peter Parker after he sacrificed his identity to save the world in No Way Home. But while nobody in the MCU might know who he is anymore, we know one superhero who will appear in his next film. Jon Bernthal's Punisher is joining Spider-Man: Brand New Day. One of Marvel's most famous vigilantes is going to share the screen with everyone's favorite neighborhood Spider-Man. The Punisher himself is joining the cast of Marvel and Sony's next joint Spider-Man movie. (News we first heard about at The Hollywood Reporter.) The film will see Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon reprise their Home trilogy roles. The movie will also mark the MCU debut of Sadie Sink, whose role is still under wraps. It's unclear how Bernthal's Punisher will fit into his first MCU movie, as very little is known about the Spider-Man: Brand New Day's plot. (Though its controversial title does offer plenty of room to speculate.) What's obvious, though, is that Bernthal has quickly become a major part of the franchise. He recently returned to the role of Frank Castle—which he first played on Netflix's Marvel series—on the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again. He will also star in his own Marvel Punisher special, which he is writing. Now Bernthal's Punisher is going to appear in a film alongside one of the most popular, most beloved comic book superheroes ever, Spider-Man. Even the Punisher can't be angry about that. But somehow we know he'll find a way regardless. Spider-Man: Brand New Day comes from director Destin Daniel Cretton. Production begins this summer in England, so we'll likely hear some more casting news sooner than later. We'll then officially get to see what kind of business the Punisher has with Peter Parker/that guy no one knows when Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives on July 31, 2026.

Spider Man meets Punisher: Bernthal joins Holland in Marvel 'Brand New Day'

In a move that's already sending shockwaves through the Marvel fandom, Jon Bernthal is officially returning as the Punisher — and this time, he's joining forces with Tom Holland's Spider??'Man in the upcoming MCU film Spider??'Man: Brand New Day. The gritty antihero's entry into Peter Parker's world marks a major tonal shift for the beloved franchise, promising a darker, high-stakes chapter in the web-slinger's journey. Fans can expect intense clashes, uneasy alliances, and the return of Bernthal's raw, hard-hitting take on Frank Castle. Bernthal's return as Frank Castle comes after his breakout portrayal of the Punisher in Netflix's Daredevil and his own spin-off series, where he won praise for his intense, emotionally complex performance. Now, his crossover into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe signals a bold narrative shift for Spider??'Man, who is rumoured to face morally grey dilemmas and street-level threats unlike anything seen in his previous solo outings. The film is expected to explore darker themes, setting the stage for one of Peter Parker's most challenging arcs yet. Brand New Day plot: A darker twist on a classic arc While Marvel remains tight-lipped about the storyline, Spider??'Man: Brand New Day is said to draw inspiration from the controversial comic arc of the same name, which explored the consequences of Peter Parker's secret identity being exposed. With Frank Castle now in the mix, the film is expected to explore a world where justice isn't always black and white — forcing Peter to question not only his role as a hero but what it means to stand for something in a world without clear lines. Following the events of No Way Home, which left Peter Parker isolated and forgotten, Brand New Day will reportedly delve into his psychological fallout. Stripped of support and trust, he now operates in the shadows — a lone figure in a city spiralling into chaos. Enter the Punisher: a symbol of vengeance whose brutal methods could either break Peter or push him to evolve. A clash of ideologies: Spidey vs the Punisher The heart of Brand New Day is expected to be driven by the ideological tension between Spider??'Man and the Punisher. While Peter believes in redemption and moral restraint, Castle is infamous for his violent, no-compromise approach. Their uneasy alliance is likely to test both men's limits, echoing comic book arcs where they often clashed as much as they collaborated. This dynamic opens the door for gritty storytelling rooted in real-world consequences — the kind of grounded, character-driven narrative Marvel fans have been craving since the Netflix Defenders era. With organised crime on the rise and the city's moral compass in flux, Spidey and Castle may find themselves fighting the same enemies — but on opposite terms. When can fans expect the film? Spider??'Man: Brand New Day is set to begin filming this summer in England, with Destin Daniel Cretton — known for directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings — at the helm. The film is slated for a theatrical release on July 31, 2026, marking a new era for Tom Holland's Spider??'Man. With a fresh creative voice, the return of Jon Bernthal's Punisher, and a storyline leaning into darker, more grounded themes, the stage is set for one of the most daring and emotionally charged Spider??'Man films yet.
