Bengals expected to sign tight end Noah Fant
CINCINNATI (AP) — Tight end Noah Fant is expected to sign with the Cincinnati Bengals. The team has not announced the signing, but coach Zac Taylor said before Thursday's practice 'we potentially have a good signing there" when asked about reports of a deal. ESPN reported the sides were working on a one-year contract. 'You've got a player that's really a plus player in both the run and the pass. At the point of attack blocking, back side of blocking. Protection, can help you. Also really explosive as a receiver," Taylor said about Fant. "Great size, great explosiveness, really good hands. Tough to bring down. We really feel good about where our tight end room will be.' Fant visited the Bengals last week after being released by the Seattle Seahawks on July 20. He had 48 receptions for 500 yards and a touchdown in 14 games last season. Fant also visited New Orleans and Miami after his trip to Cincinnati. The addition of Fant will give quarterback Joe Burrow a solid tight end duo. Mike Gesicki is expected to the starter. Fant will be going into his seventh season. He was a first-round pick by the Denver Broncos in 2019 and spent three seasons there before going to Seattle. ___ AP NFL: Joe Reedy, The Associated Press

Surprise! Saints tight end Juwan Johnson returns to practice after injury scare
Despite earlier reports suggesting Juwan Johnson would miss time due to a groin injury, the New Orleans Saints tight end appears ready to go. Johnson was spotted practicing in full pads on Day 7 of training camp, a strong sign that he's cleared for practice and that his injury is not a concern. The update comes shortly after the Cincinnati Bengals signed Noah Fant -- who recently visited New Orleans -- further reinforcing the team's confidence in Johnson's health and availability on the field. Keeping Johnson on the field, particularly in the early part of the season, will be critical for the Saints offense. Both Foster Moreau and Taysom Hill are still recovering from injuries and may not be available for Week 1. While Michael Jacobson and Treyton Welch have shown flashes during camp, their lack of game experience (and Welch's own injury) makes Johnson's presence all the more important. A healthy Juwan Johnson could go a long way for a Saints team in transition. As an athletic safety blanket for a young quarterback, his presence could be exactly what this offense needs to find its rhythm early in the season. Getting him back on the field is an encouraging sign for this team. This article originally appeared on Saints Wire: Saints training camp: Tight end Juwan Johnson (groin) back at practice

Noah Fant sweepstakes: Former first-round pick tells Saints thanks-but-no-thanks
There's an old saying that goes, "if it feels too good, it probably is." That can be said about free agent tight end Noah Fant. The former first-round pick decided against signing with the New Orleans Saints and instead will be joining the Cincinnati Bengals, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, who adds that it's just a one-year deal. The 27-year-old visited with the Bengals, the Saints and the Miami Dolphins during his weeklong free agency sweepstakes after being released by the Seattle Seahawks, who initially acquired him in a trade with the Denver Broncos. Cincinnati was the first place Fant visited, who must have set a bar too high for the others to surpass. It is not too surprising that a tight end hoping to prove himself and earn a big contract chose to go to an offense that is expected to be among the most explosive in the NFL, though New Orleans did seem to have the easiest path to playing time. Catching passes from Joe Burrow beats running routes for Spencer Rattler, Tyler Shough, or Jake Haener, or Tua Tagovailoa. The Bengals are also better positioned to compete in the playoffs than the Saints or Dolphins. Tight end has been a nightmare situation for the Saints so far this preseason. Taysom Hill is still dealing with the torn ACL he suffered back in Week 13 of last season. Foster Moreau opened training camp on the PUP list as he is still recovering from a knee injury that required surgery over the offseason. Then, during Wednesday's training camp practice, both Juwan Johnson and free agent pickup Treyton Welch suffered injuries, though Johnson's ailment doesn't appear to be too serious. It was a position group that had already been underperforming as of late, and Fant seemed like the perfect remedy. New Orleans will need to find a different source of juicing up their offense.
