Mets prospect Jonah Tong strikes out eight for Binghamton, Nolan McLean solid with Syracuse

Jonah Tong continues to rise up the ranks of Mets prospects with his performance in Double-A this season, and Friday was another quality outing for the right-hander. Tong struck out eight batters across six innings while allowing one run on three hits and three walks. While Tong didn't come away with the win, the Rumble Ponies pulled out the 3-1 win on Friday against Portland. Advertisement After Friday's start, Tong lowered his ERA slightly to a season-low 1.73 and has pitched to a minuscule 0.93 ERA in the month of June (five starts). In those five June starts, Tong has struck out at least eight batters in four of them. Behind Tong, the offense was solid, accumulating eight hit,s including one from Jett Williams and two from Carson Benge. Benge made his fourth start with Double-A Binghamton on Friday and after going hitless in his first two games, he's now had at least one knock in back-to-back games. It's also notable that Benge, despite his two hitless games, has reached back in all four games with Binghamton as he's picked up five walks in that span. Checking in with Triple-A Syracuse, Nolan McLean continues his rise up the Mets' farm system with another solid start on Friday. Advertisement Although he took the loss, McLean was sharp, allowing just two runs on four hits and three walks across six innings of work. He also struck out four batters. In nine appearances (seven starts) with Syracuse, McLean has pitched to a 2.72 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. While he has not been a strikeout machine (45 strikeouts across 49.2 innings) in Triple-A, he has the potential to be better. Before being promoted, McLean struck out 30 batters in 26.1 innings with Binghamton. Behind McLean, the offense was quiet. Syracuse picked up just one run on six hits and the litany of hitters with major league experience all went hitless. Luisangel Acuña finished 0-for-3 with two walks and a strikeout, while Francisco Alvarez went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. The former Mets backstop is hitless in five games (0-for-14).

Mets' fireballer enters MLB Pipeline's Top 100 prospects list

There's a kind of electricity in baseball that doesn't come from scoreboards or stadium lights—it comes from promise. From that moment when a prospect stops being a name on a backfield lineup card and starts knocking on the big-league door. That moment just arrived for Nolan McLean. Advertisement In a season already brimming with questions for the New York Mets, one answer is beginning to emerge with clarity and power. The 23-year-old right-hander has officially entered MLB Pipeline's Top 100 Prospects list, a testament to his dominance and rising stature in a system that is always hungry for arms. His arrival coincides with the graduation of Kumar Rocker, creating a fitting trade of elite-level promise. Across five starts, he carved through Eastern League lineups like a hot knife through a butter sculpture—allowing just a 1.37 ERA and striking out 30 batters in 26.1 innings. Advertisement It wasn't just the results—it was the method. McLean worked with precision, blending his mid-90s fastball and sweeping slider with surgical command. For scouts and player development staff, it was a clear sign: the kid was ready for a bigger test. Triple-A proves he's more than a flash in the pan The jump to Triple-A can expose flaws. The International League is notorious for inflating ERAs and humbling even the best minor league arms. But for McLean, the jump felt more like a continuation than a challenge. In seven games (five starts) with the Syracuse Mets, McLean has maintained a pristine 2.56 ERA over 38.2 innings, adding 35 strikeouts to his growing résumé. Advertisement His ability to suppress power and miss bats in such a hitter-friendly environment makes his performance even more eye-opening. Pitchers are often compared to painters—crafting masterpieces one brushstroke at a time. McLean, however, works more like a sculptor: chiseling away at hitters' confidence with every sharp cutter and darting slider. What truly sets him apart is the depth and deception of his pitch mix and how well he spins the ball. The fastball consistently lives in the mid-90s and occasionally touches 98 mph. It pairs beautifully with a vicious sweeping slider that has already been dubbed 'big-league ready.' Advertisement He also flashes a low-90s cutter that jams lefties, a fading changeup in the high-80s to disrupt timing, and a curveball to add shape variation. His ability to spin the ball is elite—scouts have been known to circle his bullpen sessions like hawks. McLean is a breath of fresh, fireball-infused air for the Mets. What's next for Nolan McLean? It's not just fans who are taking notice. Mets brass have been closely monitoring McLean's progress, and with the big-league club searching for reliable rotation depth, his name is being discussed more frequently behind closed doors. If he keeps this up, it's only a matter of time before McLean hears his name called at Citi Field. Barring injury or setback, a late-summer debut feels not just possible, but probable. Mets' Frankie Montas roughed up in first Triple-A rehab outing

Mets right-hander Frankie Montas had his rehab assignment transferred to Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, and his time on the mound hours later didn't go exactly according to plan. Working his way back from a months-long lat strain, Montas took a beating against the Blue Jays' affiliate, allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out four. While he reached 61 pitches (43 strikes) and stretched out to four-plus innings of work, half of the hits were home runs and three were even to the same player, Will Robertson. Advertisement Montas looked much sharper last Thursday in his second rehab start for High-A Brooklyn. In that outing, the 32-year-old allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while fanning three across three frames. He also threw 49 pitches (28 strikes). Of course, Tuesday's pitching line wasn't pretty. But the good news is that Montas completed the assignment, and barring some setback, he might need only one more rehab appearance before rejoining the Mets' active roster within the next week or so. Shortly after Montas' exit on Tuesday, top prospect Nolan McLean entered in relief, striking out six across four innings of two-run ball (72 pitches). His season ERA now sits at 2.63.

Mets Prospect Roundup: Nolan McLean battles through five innings, Ronny Mauricio drives in a run

The Mets have a deep roster of pitching prospects in their system, including Nolan McLean. McLean, 23, had a successful Triple-A debut last week and was on the bump again for the Syracuse Mets on Thursday night, but it was a different story this time. Advertisement In his first Triple-A start, McLean pitched seven scoreless innings, but he could only get through five against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. In those five innings, McLean allowed four runs on five hits while striking out four. The biggest issue for McLean on Thursday was his command. He walked six batters and allowed two home runs. The first came in the third on an 82 mph curveball that had too much plate, and the second came in the fourth on a 75 mph curveball that was down and in on left-handed Justin Crawford, the Phillies' No. 3 prospect and son of former major league player Carl Crawford. McLean retired the final four batters he faced, so there's something to build upon for his next start with Syracuse. The right-hander took the loss as the IronPigs defeated the Syracuse Mets, 7-3. Offensively, Syracuse picked up eight hits and Drew Gilbert was in the mix on Thursday. The outfielder went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. The 24-year-old is now slashing .244/.384/.372 with an .848 OPS this season. He also has four home runs and six doubles across Low-A and Triple-A this season. Jett, Ronny drive in runs for Double-A Down with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, Jett Williams had another solid day at the plate. The shortstop went 1-for-3 with walk and an RBI double to help Binghamton win 5-3 over the Hartford Yard Goats. Advertisement After Thursday's performance, Williams is now slashing .280/.374/.490 with an .864 OPS in 29 games with Binghamton. He's also smashed three homers, eight doubles and stolen seven bases in nine tries. Ronny Mauricio continued his rehab with Double-A on Thursday, playing seven innings at third base while going 1-for-4 with an RBI double. The double came in the eighth on a pitch running up and away from him that the infielder hit over the center fielder's head. Mauricio's double was his second hit (both doubles) with Binghamton in four games since being transferred from St. Lucie. Ryan Clifford did not have that same success at the plate. Playing as the DH, Clifford went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
