Loud boom in Perak could've been natural, says state top cop

IPOH: While a natural explanation is likely, the cause of the loud boom and brief tremor that shook several parts of Ipoh is still being investigated, says the Perak police chief. Datuk Noor Hisam Noordin said the incident, which occurred at around 10.30am on June 18, sparked concern among residents in Chemor, Chepor and Tanah Hitam. 'Initial investigations have not found any evidence of misconduct or unscheduled demolition activity at quarries. 'We have interviewed residents from the affected areas and referred the matter to geologists and the Department of Minerals and Geoscience Malaysia (JMG),' he told reporters during a handover ceremony at the Senior Police Officers' Mess yesterday. 'There is no indication of any misconduct or unscheduled blasting activity. 'It's all natural causes but we are still conducting a thorough investigation,' he said, adding that a similar incident occurred on June 6 last year. 'Such events might happen only once every 10 years. But now we've seen two consecutive cases in June. 'We are studying this phenomenon more closely.' He added that authorities will be calling for a multi-agency meeting involving JMG, quarry operators, the armed forces and other related bodies to discuss the issue in greater depth. 'The public is advised to remain calm and not to speculate. There is no cause for alarm. People can continue with their daily routines as usual,' he said. On a separate matter, Noor Hisam said the police have recorded a statement from a teacher accused of posting offensive remarks about the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students on the East-West Highway in Gerik. 'We have already recorded the statement and seized his mobile phone to assist in the investigation. 'The investigation paper is almost complete, pending the medical report from the hospital. 'Once received, we will submit the case to the deputy public prosecutor for further action,' he said. Earlier, a Facebook account bearing the name 'Khalid Yunus' had sparked public outrage after it wrote that the 15 students had 'died in disgrace'. The post has since been deleted and the account holder has posted a public apology, claiming he suffered from schizophrenia. State education, higher education, youth and sports committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah later confirmed that the account belonged to a secondary school teacher. The Perak Education Department is also preparing a full report on the matter.

Perak cops probing origins of mortar shell found near Menora Tunnel

IPOH: The discovery of a mortar shell near the Menora Tunnel along the North-South Expressway on Monday (June 30) is still under investigation, says the Perak police chief. Comm Datuk Noor Hisam Noordin said the probe includes determining whether or not the shell is a World War II relic. "Everything is still under investigation. At this point, we cannot confirm how it ended up there. "Based on the report we received, it was indeed an explosive mortar shell,' he told reporters at the handing over of duties ceremony for the state internal security and public safety chief and Gerik OCPD at the police officers' mess hall here on Wednesday (July 2). ALSO READ: QuickCheck: Was a mortar shell found next to a highway near Ipoh? He added that the shell was safely disposed of at the scene by the Perak police bomb disposal unit. 'We apologise for having to divert traffic in the area. We were concerned that the disposal could pose a risk to highway users in the area,' he said. Comm Noor Hisam urged the public to immediately report any suspicious objects they come across to the nearest police station. "Old ordnance or unexploded bombs could still be in forested or rural areas. 'If you find such objects, do not touch them. Avoid any interaction and inform the nearest police station immediately,' he advised. Earlier, the unexploded shell was discovered by a 51-year-old contract worker doing cleaning work at around 9.30am on Monday (June 30). In response to the discovery, PLUS Malaysia Berhad temporarily closed the Kuala Kangsar-Ipoh stretch in both directions at 3.02pm as a safety precaution. The blast radius from its disposal reportedly extended up to 200m.

Retired doctor loses nearly RM4mil to family friend

IPOH: A retired doctor lost about RM3.9mil to a non-existent financial scheme he had continually invested in for over a decade with a woman he met through his late wife. The 74-year-old was introduced to the scheme more than 10 years ago through a family friend, said Perak police chief Comm Datuk Noor Hisam Noordin. The doctor was cheated by the female suspect with whom he got acquainted by his late wife in 2014, he said. 'The suspect had offered him the opportunity to invest in a scheme. 'Having been briefed by the suspect, he got interested and trusted her because she was his wife's friend,' Comm Noor Hisam said in a statement yesterday. The doctor first invested in the scheme in December 2014, when he gave the suspect RM12,000 in person at a bank in Ipoh. 'Over the years until April 9 this year, he continued making payments, both in cash and through bank transfers to the suspect's personal account, amounting to RM3.9mil. 'The victim only recently realised that he had been deceived after never receiving any returns or profits from the investment scheme,' Comm Noor Hisam said, adding that a report was lodged at the district police station here on Thursday. 'Each time he asked about the money, the suspect would give various excuses,' he added. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

"We will escort the remains from here, exiting via the Kuala Kangsar route, through Gerik, then on to Jeli, and from Jeli straight to Kuala Terengganu, at the border between Kelantan and Terengganu," he said. It was reported that 15 students were killed in an accident involving a student bus and a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) along the East-West Highway (Jalan Raya Timur Barat) early this morning. The bus was travelling from Jerteh, Terengganu, to the university's main campus.
