Ex-Astro worker facing 743 charges to undergo psych evaluation
The Kuala Lumpur sessions court interpreter earlier read out 132 charges against the accused of altering Astro's customer management system to convert regular customer accounts into corporate accounts. KUALA LUMPUR : A former Astro employee facing 743 charges over unauthorised data system modifications has been ordered by the sessions court here to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Judge Norma Ismail ordered Nora Idayu Jaafar, 48, to undergo a one-month evaluation at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Perak beginning June 30, after her lawyer raised her health condition during mitigation today. Lawyer Daniel Annamalai said Nora had gone to a private clinic on June 6, where the doctor suspected she was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD and referred her to a specialist. A referral letter from the clinic was furnished to the court. When asked by the judge if she was ever diagnosed with a psychiatric condition, the accused claimed to have suffered from one prior to being charged earlier this month. She said she never sought treatment as she was preoccupied with a child custody battle in the shariah courts. Daniel also said Nora's husband had resigned from his job last week to take care of her. She is currently unemployed. Earlier, the court interpreter read out 132 charges against the accused of altering Astro's customer management system to convert regular customer accounts into corporate accounts. The offences were said to have been committed between 2013 and 2020 at Astro's office at Menara Icon on Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur. The charges were framed under Section 5(1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997, which carries a maximum fine of RM100,000, up to seven years in jail, or both, upon conviction. Nora claimed trial to all of the charges. Today's session was a continuation from the June 4 court date, which was adjourned after Nora fainted when the 90th charge was read to her. Today, she was allowed to sit down in the dock while the charges were read out to her. The court fixed July 29 for an update of her mental condition before a decision is made on whether to proceed with the rest of the charges.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — The Sessions Court here today ordered a former employee of a pay television station who is facing 743 charges of tampering with clients' account data to undergo a month's observation at Hospital Bahagia Tanjong Rambutan, Ulu Kinta, Perak. Judge Norma Ismail ordered Nora Idayu Jaafar, 48, to be sent to the hospital after her lawyer, Daniel Annamalai, informed the court that he received a letter from a clinic, dated June 6, requesting that the accused be sent for psychiatric assessment as she is suspected of suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). 'The accused is hereby sent to Hospital Bahagia for observation for one month. Since the accused is on bail, the accused must go to the hospital on June 30,' said the judge, who then set July 29 for mention. Deputy Public Prosecutor Rohaiza Abd Rahman appeared for the prosecution. Meanwhile, in today's proceedings, the court took almost two hours to read out 132 of the 743 charges against Nora Idayu, who had fainted in court after the 30th of 743 charges was read out to her last June 4. She collapsed in the dock shortly after entering her non-guilty plea to the 30th charge. The proceedings had to be halted while the court's security personnel and medical assistants from the Kuala Lumpur Hospital were deployed to the courtroom. Nora Idayu, who was with the commercial support unit, is accused of converting the regular client's account to a corporate account without authorisation at Astro's office in Menara Icon at Jalan Tun Razak here in 2014. The alterations were deemed unauthorised and fall under Section 5(1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997, a law that deals with illegal use or modification of data in computer systems. RM100,000 per charge if found guilty If found guilty, she could be looking at up to seven years in prison, a fine of up to RM100,000, or both – per charge. The court has granted her bail set at RM10,000 with one surety. Additional conditions include surrendering her passport until the trial concludes and reporting to the nearest police station once a month. Nora Idayu Jaafar, 48, who was serving with Astro at the time, collapsed and fainted as the court interpreter was reading the 30th charge under the Computer Crimes Act 1997 before Judge Norma Ismail. The court then set June 26 for the reading of the remaining 713 charges, after the accused pleaded not guilty to the first 30. The court allowed Nora Idayu bail of RM10,000 with one surety, with the added conditions that she must surrender her passport to the court until the case is concluded and report to the nearest police station once a month. According to the 30 charges, in her capacity as an associate with the Department of Commercial Support Unit at Astro, she allegedly modified data by converting 30 ordinary customer accounts into corporate accounts in the Astro customer management system (AMDOCS CRM), resulting in unauthorised database alterations. The offences were allegedly committed at the Astro Office at Menara Icon, Jalan Tun Razak here. The charges, under Section 5 (1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997, provide for a penalty of up to RM100,000 fine or imprisonment of up to seven years, or both, upon conviction. The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Rohaiza Abdul Rahman, while the accused was unrepresented.
