The Times' softball coach of the year: Rick Robinson of Norco
During a softball season when top pitchers were hard to find, coach Rick Robinson of Norco High was patient, wise and comforting in helping sophomore Coral Williams make the kind of improvement that could lead to a championship. Then came the biggest game of the season — the Southern Section Division 1 final against El Modena. And all Williams did was complete a one-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory, rewarding Robinson and Norco with an eighth championship. For guiding his team to a 29-3 record while mixing in a combination of young and veteran players, Robinson has been selected The Times' softball coach of the year for 2025. Advertisement The Cougars were seeded No. 1 and started the season 11-0 before losing to El Modena 5-4. That loss immediately punctured the invincibility of Norco and had Robinson making sure his players kept working hard. Then there was a 1-0 loss to Orange Lutheran in April. Norco High's softball program under coach Richard Robinson has been setting the standard for excellence in the Southern Section for years. The top-seeded Cougars will seek to add a seventh section title on Saturday in the Division 1 final against El Modena in a 7 p.m. game at Bill Barber Park in Irvine. This team has lots of top hitters. Leighton Gray is batting .455 with 40 hits, eight home runs and 25 RBIs. Ashley Duran has six home runs, 34 RBIs and a .438 batting average. Tamryn Shorter is hitting .407 with 37 hits, nine home runs and 24 RBIs. Sophomore Coral Williams has emerged as a quality pitcher with a 16-0 record, backed by junior Peyton May. El Modena has gotten hot in the playoffs behind second baseman Kaitlyn Galasso and shortstop Kylie Tafua. Don't doubt that the Vanguards can score runs if needed. They were able to knock off high-scoring Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 6-4 in the quarterfinals and scored 13 runs in a semifinal win over Temescal Canyon. … Advertisement Cal State Northridge will be the site for three City Section softball championship games on Saturday, with the featured matchup at 3 p.m. in the Open Division in which Carson will try to defeat Granada Hills for a third consecutive year. Prep talk: Norco unveils standout freshman pitcher Jordan Ayala
It's already time to get excited about a freshman baseball player. Pitcher Jordan Ayla of Norco High made a sensational debut last week against Orange Lutheran, striking out 11 in a 2-1 victory. He retired the first 11 batters and gave up two hits with one walk in 5 1/3 innings. 'He's really good,' Norco coach Gary Parcell said. Ayala was clocked throwing fastballs in the 90s. Besides his good velocity, it's Ayala's poise that makes Parcell convinced the right-hander has a talent for pitching. He's also a three-sport athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball. He was originally attending South Hills until transferring to Norco in November. 'We're really young and adding a young pitcher like that takes you to another level,' Parcell said. … The City Section boys' basketball semifinals in Division I are Wednesday, with Granada Hills hosting Poly and L.A.
