Norfolk International Airport breaks record for most travelers in a single day

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After being named the best domestic airport in the country, Norfolk International Airport is now celebrating another win: the largest-ever number of travelers to go through the airport in a single day. On Sunday, July 6, 11,522 people got on a plane at Norfolk International. A majority of those travelers were returning home after spending their Fourth of July holiday in Hampton Roads. President and CEO of the Norfolk Airport Authority Mark Perryman said that around this time last year the airport didn't record more than 10,000 in a single day. 'Success breeds success at the end of the day,' Perryman said. 'So, we're growing because the region's growing. There's a reason why we have airlines wanting to serve more destinations here. It's because there's a demand here.' The increase in the number of travelers is leading to physical growth of the airport. Perryman outlined to 10 On Your Side all of the projects in the works, which include extending the departures terminal, a new state-of-the-art rental car facility, a new federal inspection services building, a hotel and a new hanger for private aircrafts. 'We are at the beginning of, a probably about a five-year window of major overhaul of this airport.' Perryman said. 'You're going to see a lot of 'pardon our dust' please be patient with us.' Old runway removal makes way for simpler route to Norfolk International Airport

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — You may remember the first time you took Robin Hood Road into Norfolk International Airport. You may also remember feeling like you made a wrong turn somewhere and ended up behind the Perryman, president and CEO of the Norfolk Airport Authority, said the wrap-around road was designed before the airport grew to the size it is now. 'This roadway system was really designed for traffic back in the 70s,' Perryman said. 'So, not a lot has happened to the roads since then.' Now, changes are coming. A new road will cut straight through the site of an inactive runway. Norfolk International Airport breaks record for most travelers in a single day 'So, we're going to close that [runway], bring Robin Hood Road straight across and it will end up in this brand new intersection that we're building,' Perryman said. 'It'll be a normal four-way intersection that has all the lights and signalization. It will have a brand new 'Welcome to ORF' sign.' The project is being done with $18 million from the federal government through begins this week and is planned to be finished in one year.'It'll be a little complicated and a little dicey during construction, Perryman said. 'We'll have maintenance of operations and turns and all that built into it.' The project does include the removal of some trees, but the team said it is working with the city's arborist to make sure Norfolk International maintains the beautiful foliage that it's known for.'We're not just going off and cutting trees, bare earth here,' Perryman said. 'We're doing it very methodically and with a lot of thought behind it.'
