Al Batinah International Film Festival returns in October

Muscat – The third edition of Al Batinah International Film Festival will be held from October 27 to 30 in Suhar, North Batinah. Oman Film Society made the announcement on Tuesday in cooperation with North Batinah Governor's Office and invited filmmakers from Oman and abroad to submit entries by September 20. The biennial event, which is gaining reputation as a cultural platform, will feature competitions for short documentaries, narrative shorts and feature films. All entries must have been produced between 2023 and 2024 and be of two- to 20-minute duration. Submissions must be in MOV or MP4 format, with subtitles. Films deemed offensive or discriminatory will not be accepted, and selected works will become part of the festival's archive. Mohammad bin Abdullah al Ajmi, Chairman of Oman Film Society, said the festival is a continuation of efforts to support Omani talent and promote a professional platform for creative expression. 'Cinema today is a tool for cultural and economic development, and a means of expressing national identity and contributing to the creative economy,' he said. Mohammad bin Abdullah al Ajmi Ajmi noted that the festival aligns with the principles of decentralisation under Oman Vision 2040, which encourages governorates to lead cultural initiatives and manage development efforts independently. 'This festival is more than a competition; it is a celebration of storytelling and a bridge between cultures,' Ajmi said. 'We are proud to see increasing interest from international filmmakers and remain committed to nurturing talent, elevating standards to position Oman as a serious voice in global cinema.' Ajmi added that Oman Film Society will continue to work with public and private sector partners to deliver cultural events that meet the expectations of Omani youth and contribute to the development of a vibrant film industry. Submission guidelines and forms are available through the festival's official channels or via email at [email protected]

Suhar – As part of its efforts to nurture young talent, Ministry of Labour (MoL), represented by the vocational colleges in Suhar, Khaboura and Shinas, has launched a series of specialised training programmes for school students in cooperation with North Batinah Governor's Office. Called Our Summer: Skills and Creativity, the programmes aim to equip students with practical skills that enhance their talents and prepare them for real-life situations. The programmes provide an interactive environment where participants can exchange ideas, experiences and questions. A ministry official stated that the series reflects the ministry's vision to support the younger generation by developing their capabilities through hands-on vocational training. The programmes taking place at Shinas Vocational College are focused on the fundamentals of the English language, basics of electricity and physics, drawing, refrigeration and air conditioning, welding, and fabrication. Khaboura Vocational College is conducting training in 3D model design, printing and assembly, marine safety, distress response and safe navigation. Suhar Vocational College is offering sessions on home water maintenance, wood design and shaping, painting, and decoration. The training programmes are part of MoL's broader aim to prepare students for the future by bridging the gap between academic learning and the technical skills required in the labour market.

North Batinah launches youth platform to boost civic engagement

Suhar – North Batinah has launched a dedicated platform, called Shabab, to empower young Omanis and support sustainable development efforts across the governorate. Announced by North Batinah Governor's Office, the platform aims to promote innovation, dialogue and civic engagement, serving as a link between the youth and government institutions. It seeks to support youth-led initiatives, encourage creative thinking and involve young people in decision-making processes in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040. Shabab is part of a wider strategy to enhance the role of youth in driving development across the governorate. The platform is expected to create an environment that promotes collaboration across sectors and helps unlock the potential of young people. According to the governor's office, Shabab will focus on enhancing youth participation in sustainable development, improving communication within communities, and promoting dialogue on development projects. It also aims to support development of innovative ideas for municipal work and provide tools to help youth make tangible contributions to society. The platform will also work to identify and invest in local talent and promote a culture of creativity. Evaluating youth-led initiatives for impact and sustainability is a key component of the initiative. Volunteerism is another central focus, with the platform encouraging youth participation in community projects as a form of civic responsibility. Youth ambassadors will also be appointed to promote Oman Vision 2040 and other strategic initiatives in their communities. The governor's office said the platform offers an opportunity for youth to share ideas, raise concerns and engage in discussions about the challenges they face. 'This initiative reflects the governorate's commitment to giving young people a voice in shaping the future and contributing to national development,' a statement added.
