NDP tank that hit traffic light: MINDEF says technical fault was the first in its Leopard 2SG fleet
SINGAPORE: The tank collision with a traffic light at a National Day Parade (NDP) national education show on Jul 5 was an isolated incident, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said, adding that the Singapore Army has concluded its investigation into the event. This was the first time the Singapore Army had experienced such a technical fault in its Leopard 2SG Main Battle Tank (L2SG) fleet, MINDEF said in a media release on Friday (Jul 11). "All Mobile Column assets, including the L2SGs, undergo thorough checks before deployment. No issues were detected for the affected L2SG before it moved out," it added. "Comprehensive checks performed across the L2SG fleet since the incident have determined that it was an isolated one." The affected tank was part of the Mobile Column segment for NDP. With the cause of the incident identified and rectified, and additional precautions taken, the L2SGs will resume their participation in this year's NDP, said MINDEF. WHAT HAPPENED The incident had occurred as the tank was turning towards North Bridge Road within the cordoned area, said MINDEF. The investigation found that an internal component within the transmission – specifically the conduit for the transmission fluid to the service brake – had malfunctioned, it said. This resulted in a loss of transmission oil pressure, causing the tank to experience a partial loss in its steering and braking power in the service brake, it added. The tank operator, a full-time national serviceman, responded with the appropriate standard operating procedure, and activated the parking brake to bring the affected tank to a stop, said MINDEF. RENK GmbH, the transmission's original equipment manufacturer, also indicated that this malfunction was previously unknown, the ministry said. The manufacturer will work with the Singapore Army on a maintenance regime for the affected component to prevent reoccurrence, it added.

NDP tank hit traffic light after losing steering and braking power: MINDEF
SINGAPORE: The tank collision with a traffic light at a National Day Parade 2025 national education show was due to an "isolated component" that led to the loss of steering and braking power, according to preliminary investigation findings. More detailed reviews on the tank will be done "out of an abundance of caution", Colonel David Kwek, the chairman of the Ministry of Defence's (MINDEF) outreach and heartlands celebration group, said on Tuesday (Jul 8). On Saturday, the tank "experienced a technical issue" that caused it to come into contact with a traffic light along North Bridge Road, said MINDEF then. Footage of the incident was shared online by Facebook page SGRV. In the video, the tank is seen making a right turn near Parliament House when it collides with a traffic light. It is then seen reversing and pausing before completing the turn, and the traffic light was left slightly askew. The traffic light was repaired by 4am on Sunday, the Land Transport Authority said on Monday. "The safety and well-being of the public and our crews are of paramount importance," COL Kwek said. He added that the tank, which leads the line-up of the mobile column segment, will resume its participation in NDP 2025 activities after all the necessary safety checks and clearances are completed.

MINDEF tank clips lamp post near Parliament House; no injuries reported
SINGAPORE: A Ministry of Defence tank struck a street lamp while making a turn onto North Bridge Road on Saturday evening (5 July), causing minor damage to the lamp post but no injuries. According to a video posted by SG Road Vigilante on Facebook, the armoured vehicle was turning right in front of Parliament House when it clipped the roadside lamp post at about 7:22pm. The impact caused the lamp post to tilt slightly. The video shows the tank pausing momentarily after the collision before reversing safely and moving away from the area. Several personnel were seen on site checking the scene shortly afterwards. A Ministry of Defence spokesperson has since confirmed that the tank had been participating in a mobile unit display at an event and had been making its way back to its base when the incident took place. The spokesperson said the incident was caused by a mechanical failure as the vehicle navigated the turn. Technical issue causes tank to collide into traffic light during National Day Parade education show
SINGAPORE: A tank experienced a technical issue on Saturday (Jul 5) during a National Day Parade 2025 education show, causing it to come into contact with a traffic light. In response to queries from CNA, a Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) spokesperson said the incident took place at about 7.20pm. The Leopard 2SG Main Battle Tank (L2SG) experienced a technical issue following the Mobile Column segment of the National Day Parade 2025 National Education (NE) Show 2. 'This resulted in an incident along North Bridge Road, where the tank came into contact with a traffic light,' said the spokesperson. Footage of the incident was shared online by Facebook page SGRV. In the video, the tank is seen making a right turn near Parliament House when it collides with a traffic light. It is then seen reversing and pausing before completing the turn, and the traffic light was left slightly askew. MINDEF said no personnel were injured during the incident and the tank remained within the cordoned area, away from the public. 'The L2SG was travelling within the speed limit of 20kmh when the incident occurred. The tank crew responded in accordance with standard operating procedures and the L2SG was safely recovered with no damage to the vehicle. 'Minor damage was sustained to the traffic light stand,' it said. The spokesperson added that investigations are ongoing, and that MINDEF and the NDP 2025 Executive Committee have worked with the Land Transport Authority and completed the necessary repairs.
