5 Make-or-Break Games on 2025 Detroit Lions Schedule

5 Make-or-Break Games on 2025 Detroit Lions Schedule originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Lions have gone from the hunter to the hunted in the National Football League on the heels of consecutive NFC North Division championships. Detroit is expected to be a team to watch this season as Dan Campbell's squad will bring back most of its roster, including a bevy of players who missed significant time during the second half of the 2024-25 season. The Detroit Lions' 2025 schedule looks daunting for any team, let alone one of the most talented in the NFL, as it includes games against improved division foes, recent Super Bowl Champions, and NFL MVPs alike. Here are five make-or-break games that could determine whether the Lions finish at or near the top of the NFC or back toward the middle of the pack. 5. Bears at Lions (Sept. 14) Expect Bears head coach Ben Johnson to throw the kitchen sink at his former team in Week 2 of the Lions' season. Johnson knows the Lions' defense inside and out and could pull the upset with the right gameplan and a boatload of weapons on offense. Detroit must bring its A game for this one and the Lions' Ford Field fans will do their best to help them to find it. 4. Lions at Commanders (Nov. 9) The Lions will be out for revenge against the team that knocked them out of the 2025 Playoffs in shocking fashion at home. Detroit can send a message to the rest of the league with a big road win against Jayden Daniels and the Commanders. A win would be a huge boost for Detroit's confidence headed toward a potential 2026 playoff run. 3. Lions at Eagles (Nov. 16) Media and fans have debated whether the Lions' Super Bowl window has "closed" since their playoff loss to the Commanders. A strong performance, and potentially a win, against the Eagles would do wonders for Detroit's confidence in pursuit of its first ever Super Bowl title. 2. Lions at Rams (Dec. 14) Detroit will get another crack at Matthew Stafford and the Rams toward the end of the season in what could be a playoff preview. Lions QB Jared Goff and Stafford are forever linked, and another duel between them could provide the challenge Goff needs to prove he's capable of winning it all at the controls of Detroit's offense. 1. Steelers at Lions (Dec. 21) Pittsburgh is always well coached under Mike Tomlin and this could be a trap game with the Vikings and Bears scheduled for the final two weeks of the regular story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 19, 2025, where it first appeared.

David Montgomery Issues Bold 4-Word Moniker For Lions' 2025 Season

David Montgomery Issues Bold 4-Word Moniker For Lions' 2025 Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Lions have won back-to-back NFC North Division titles and cemented themselves as a Super Bowl contender over the past two seasons. Now, the Lions' forgotten man, David Montgomery, thinks it's time for Detroit to take another leap. Montgomery spoke with media over the weekend and took the opportunity to send a warning to the Lions' 2025 opponents with training camp underway and Detroit gearing up for what could be one of the most memorable and important seasons in franchise history. "The year of reckoning," Montgomery said to reporters about how he wants this season to be known. "We're tired of being close. It's cool to be close at first, but you don't want to get comfortable with being close all the time," he added. "You want to finish it. This is the year for us." The powerful Lions running back has found a home in Detroit where he has improved his durability and dependability alongside rising star Jahmyr Gibbs. Montgomery scored 12 touchdowns on the ground last season as Gibbs scored 16. Montgomery has scored double-digit touchdowns in back-to-back seasons with coach Dan Campbell's team. He also added 36 receptions for 341 yards as the Lions became one of the best offensive teams int he National Football League with Jared Goff behind center as the team's story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 21, 2025, where it first appeared.

Canadiens trade Cayden Primeau to Hurricanes

On the eve of free agency, and despite tendering an offer sheet to retain the restricted free agent, the Canadiens traded goaltender Cayden Primeau Monday to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. 'Cayden is just 25 and coming off his best AHL season. He adds seasoned depth to our organization at the goaltending position,' Carolina General Manager Eric Tulsky said in a team statement. Selected in the seventh round (199th overall) in 2017, Primeau was 2-3-1 with the Canadiens this season over 11 games with a 4.70 GAA and .836 save percentage. In what might have been his final appearance on Dec. 12, he allowed three goals on seven shots in relief of Samuel Montembeault during a 9-2 Bell Centre loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Primeau was inconsistent in the playoffs for the Rocket, with a 3.27 average and .878 save percentage over eight games. While he shut out Rochester in the deciding game of the North Division final, he was exposed by Charlotte in the next round, allowing 12 goals over portions of three games. He was being pulled in two of them for backup Jacob Fowler, who started Game 4. Stu Cowan of The Gazette contributed to this report.

Cayden Primeau's run with Canadiens organization appears to be over

Article content Cayden Primeau can take credit for helping the Laval Rocket finish first overall in the AHL this season. Article content But as Primeau heads into an uncertain summer, the Rocket goaltender must accept his share of the blame for being unable to help the Rocket get past the Charlotte Checkers in the recent Eastern Conference final. Article content 'It was a tough ending. You never want to go out without winning, but we can be really proud of what we accomplished this year,' Primeau said during the team's recent end-of-season media availability after being swept by Charlotte. 'You have to give it to (Charlotte); they're a great team. There's only one winner at the end of the day. There's a lot of unhappy teams. It takes a lot to get to where we did. We can be proud of that.' Article content Article content Primeau, 25, was 21-2-2 this season with Laval. His goals-against average was a scintillating 1.96. His save percentage was .927 and he had two shutouts — one in his second game after clearing waivers and being loaned to the Rocket on Dec. 29 after struggling again with the Canadiens. Article content 'To say I was playing my best hockey (with Montreal), I'd be lying,' Primeau said. 'The team at the beginning of the year — I think everyone knows it — wasn't the team that was playing in the playoffs. Coming to Laval … you don't have many bad days. You want to be in the NHL, but when you're in Laval, it's a great opportunity.' Article content Article content Primeau was recalled by the Canadiens on April 27 — but never played — after Montembeault suffered a lower-body injury in Game 3 of their opening-round playoff series against Washington. Primeau backed up Jakub Dobes the next two games before Montreal was eliminated, then returned for Laval's post-season run. Article content Article content Primeau was removed in the second period of both the second and third games after allowing four goals in each contest. Laval head coach Pascal Vincent then started Jacob Fowler in Game 4, a 3-2 loss. Article content 'To start, it's not an easy league,' Primeau said. 'It's a grind. It was an emotional series before, going to Game 5 against a good (Rochester) team. A lot of guys gave everything they had in that series and into that fifth game. I don't think I handled it well in terms of (preparing for Charlotte). Going into that series and falling down early, we were chasing the series from the get-go. I think that was the biggest thing.'
