Travel + Leisure Readers' 3 Favorite San Diego Hotels of 2025
With its sublime weather, coastal beauty, and laid-back vibe, San Diego ticks all the boxes for a quintessential Southern California vacation. But its real strength lies in its versatility. Want a high-energy girls' weekend fueled by street tacos and seasonal cocktails? A blissed-out couples' escape with sunset cruises and spa treatments? A sun-soaked family extravaganza that packs in Legoland, the zoo, and plenty of time in the sand? Done, done, and done. The city's hotel scene is just as varied, with properties ranging from a maximalist jewel box in North Park to a modern hideaway that occupies a 1920s-era YMCA building. In this year's World's Best Awards, T+L readers showed a clear preference for the energy and convenience of downtown. Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe—to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 180,000 T+L readers completed the 2025 survey. A total of more than 657,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.). Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, inn, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below: Rooms/facilities Location Service Food Value For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses. This year's most-loved San Diego hotels are concentrated in two popular neighborhoods: the Gaslamp Quarter and the Marina District. The former appeals for its charming Victorian architecture and robust bar scene while the latter offers proximity to such family-friendly attractions as the New Children's Museum, South Embarcadero Esplanade, and several waterfront parks. Situated in the heart of the Gaslamp, the No. 2 Andaz San Diego won over World's Best Awards voters on several levels, especially its location. 'Near plenty of nightlife, great amenities, and clean, stylish rooms,' shared one reader of the 159-room property. Baseball fans have a short walk to Petco Park, the San Diego's Padres home stadium, while culture buffs can catch a performance at the nearby Balboa Theatre. As for that nightlife? Guests of the hotel are spoiled for choice, with options that include several excellent modern speakeasies (Noble Experiment, Youngblood, Prohibition Lounge) and taprooms (Ales Tales, Nason's Beer Hall) in addition to the hotel's own rooftop bar. Over by the waterfront, the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina (No. 3 for the second year in a row) provides a convenient home base for travelers looking to take advantage of the city's coastline and all-ages entertainment. Right across the street, guests will find the New Children's Museum, where interactive art exhibits stoke creativity and curiosity in young minds. The Embarcadero serves as a scenic place to stroll or catch live music at the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, but it's also a hub for aquatic fun, whether you prefer to get out on the water with paddleboarding or simply enjoy the views from a boat deck. Pendry San Diego Interior of a guest room at the Pendry San Diego. Chosen as the No. 1 San Diego hotel each year since the debut of this category in 2022, this 317-room stunner continues to impress T+L readers with the caliber of its accommodations, dining, and hospitality. 'Fun, energizing location within the Gaslamp Quarter,' wrote one voter. 'Love the hotel amenities and restaurants. Personalized service cannot be beat.' Complementing all of the action in the city, the in-house programming ranges from whiskey tastings at Fifth & Rose, the Pendry's swanky cocktail bar, to coastal discovery hikes with local guides. When it's time to hit the reset button, the third-floor Spa Pendry excels in traditional treatments (salt-stone massages, hydrating facials), with a few 'California-style' enhancements, including CBD therapy and products infused with local ingredients like seaweed oil. Fun, energizing location within the Gaslamp Quarter. — T+L Reader 1. Pendry San Diego Reader Score: 88.42 2. Andaz San Diego Reader Score: 86.53 3. Over 100 people rescued after floodwaters strand Girl Scout group in North Park
Over 100 people were rescued after a stream in North Park flooded, stranding a group of Girl Scouts. Rescue crews had to deploy a rope to help about 105 people to safety after flash flooding hit near their cabin, leaving them landlocked. A spokesperson for Allegheny County said the Girl Scouts were put in helmets and vests and moved through the receding waters. Girl Scouts said they were at their pavilion getting ready for lunch when the skies opened up. Things quickly took a turn, but firefighters, police, EMS and swiftwater crews showed up to help. (Photo: KDKA) "Our pavilion is right by the creek and so there was log and there was water everywhere and we looked over and there was water in the parking lot flooding over the road and so we quickly grabbed all of our food and walked up to the cabin and then we just got evacuated from there," said Girl Scout Samatha Oeler. Allegheny County police said everyone was brought to safety and no one was injured. "They gave us all life jackets and helmets and told us to hold on to the person in front of us and we had a rope and just kind of held on and just walked across," Girl Scout Lila Hall said. Once they made it through the floodwaters, the Girl Scouts were picked up by their parents and headed home to get dry.

Former North Park Coach Inducted into SCB Hall of Fame
CHICAGO, May 27, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- On October 31, former North Park University Head Men's Basketball Coach Dan McCarrell will be inducted into the Small College Basketball (SCB) Hall of Fame. McCarrell, a three-time National Association of Basketball Coaches Coach of the Year (1978–80), will be honored in Lakeland, Florida, alongside 11 other members of the class of 2025. "Dan McCarrell's legacy in basketball is one of excellence, leadership, and unwavering dedication," said John Born, North Park's athletics director. "His impact on the game and the players he has mentored is immeasurable. Being inducted into the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame is a well-deserved honor recognizing his extraordinary contributions to the sport." McCarrell led then-North Park College to three consecutive national championships from 1978–80. He was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1985 and North Park's Viking Hall of Fame in 1988. He was also named the NCAA Division III Coach of the Decade for the 1970s at the national tournament banquet in 1980. He coached nine All-Americans, and four of his players were selected in the National Basketball Association draft. "Coach McCarrell being inducted to the SCB Hall of Fame is another testament to what he's built at North Park," said current Head Men's Basketball Coach Edwind McGhee. "Anytime we talk about the history and tradition of this program, Coach McCarell and his teams are our gold standard. This is a well-deserved honor for him and his family." As a North Park student-athlete, McCarrell was a men's basketball team captain during the 1960–61 season. In 17 seasons coaching the Vikings, his teams compiled a 295–159 record and played in six NCAA tournaments, boasting a tournament record of 17–4. North Park's three consecutive titles are matched only by the University of California, Los Angeles. They remain the only teams to win three consecutive national titles at any level of college basketball. McCarrell's 1979 team was the first Division III basketball team to win back-to-back national titles. This marks the ninth class inducted into the Small College Basketball National Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place at Florida Southern College.
