Appeal leads to promotion joy for Powys football club

BERRIEW Football Club will be competing in the second tier of the women's pyramid next season. The Football Association of Wales (FAW) Appeals Panel upheld the Powys club's appeal regarding promotion and will now be promoted to the Adran Genero North. The North Wales Football League had pushed for North West League runners-up Llangefni Town to be promoted but Berriew Football Club refused to partake in a play-off having won the North East Wales League. A club spokesman said: "We are immensely proud of our players, who have shown not only footballing excellence throughout the season, but great resilience and unity during this appeal process. "The decision honours their efforts and affirms their right to a fair and transparent pathway in Welsh football. "We extend our sincere thanks to the North East Wales Women's Football League (NEWWFL) for their work throughout the season, and for providing a competitive and challenging platform for all clubs. "We also wish to acknowledge Llangefni Ladies, who will no doubt be disappointed by this outcome. They are a strong and committed side. We wish them all the very best for the future." Meanwhile the club encouraged other clubs to appeal if their was a belief procedures had not been followed. A spokesman added: Our appreciation also goes to the FAW for listening to our concerns and ensuring that our appeal was treated with professionalism and care. We are grateful that the structures in place allowed our players' voices to be heard. "We believe this decision sends an important message: that individuals and teams in Welsh football should have the confidence to raise their voices when they believe rules and procedures have not been followed. "Challenging decisions can be difficult and fraught with uncertainties - especially for women in sport - but it is through that courage and commitment to fairness that we move the game forward. "We now look forward to competing in Tier 2 and continuing to grow, not just as a team, but as part of a wider movement for equity and excellence in Welsh football."

Building up for a big campaign in the Ardal Leagues

With new boss Neill Hughes now in charge at The Ring with Russ Williams and Liam Simon part of his back-room team, Llay have been boosted by the news that highly-rated striker Jon Collo will be staying on for next season's North West League campaign. Collo struck 12 goals and set up two as Llay struggled in the bottom two for most of the season. Hughes, who has also been boosted by captain Max Peate and vice-captain Dean Bryan re-signing, posted on Llay's X site: 'This is the one for me. Can't wait to work with Collo.' Llay, promoted via the play-offs 15 months ago, will be one of the favourites to go up along with Bangor 1876, who were also relegated last April. North East Wales League champions Mynydd Isa step up a division where they will go up against Flintshire rivals, Connah's Quay Town, who also have a new man at the helm with Gary McConnell taking over from Gavin Parry. Prestatyn Town and Porthmadog should be involved in the promotion picture while Anglesey outfit, Trearddur Bay, will also be up there challenging. Corwen have switched leagues hoping what happened to Brickfield Rangers last season repeats itself. Rangers moved across from the North West to the North East and won the title, pipping Bow Street, Dolgellau and Llanuwchllyn to the title. Those three will be challengers, while Cefn Albion, Penycae, Rhos Aelwyd and Llangollen Town will all be battling for a top-six finish. Lex XI have been promoted as North East Wales League runners-up and it will be interesting to see how Ricky Evans' side fare at a higher level. And there's a tasty away day to begin life for Lex, who will pay a visit to Cefn Albion on Tuesday, July 29. On the same evening, Llangollen Town begin their tilt with a big derby clash at home to Corwen, while Penycae make the trip to Llanfair United. Rhos Aelwyd have a testing home encounter versus Llanuwchllyn to contend with. Other fixtures: Bow Street v Knighton; Builth Wells v Kerry; Llandrindod Wells v Radnor Valley; Llanrhaeadr YM v Dolgellau. Mynydd Isa open their Ardal North West League season away to Prestatyn Town, who were relegated from Cymru North last time out. There are home comforts in store for Connah's Quay Town and Llay Welfare, who will tackle Llannefydd and NFA respectively. Bangor 1876 begin at home to Llanrwst United. Other fixtures: Llangefni Town v Pwllheli; Porthmadog v Penmaenmawr Phoenix; St Asaph City v Bethesda Athletic. July 30: Trearddur Bay v Y Felinheli.

No double joy to end a great campaign for Brickfield Rangers

Rangers, who lifted the Ardal North East League title a week ago, couldn't add more silverware as Porthmadog, who finished third in the North West League, deservedly took the honours. Dan Brookwell gave Porthmadog the perfect start with a second minute goal and it was 2-0 on 20 minutes as Tom Hilditch scored from the spot. Both players also netted again although Hilditch was shown a red card with 12 minutes to go. Rangers' consolation goal came from top scorer Andy Vale. While Brickfield head into Cymru North, Llay Welfare will take their place in the Ardal North set-up. And it's all change at the club where former first team boss Mike Gadie, who led Llay to Cymru North 12 months before they were relegated after one season, has taken over as chairman. And he has announced the club's new manager as Neill Hughes. 'Following our relegation back to Tier 3, it was crucial to bring in someone with a deep understanding of the league and local football scene - and Neill ticks all the boxes,' said Gadie. 'Having come up against him during our time in the Ardal North West, I was always impressed by the work rate, discipline and attitude of his sides. 'After an initial conversation and a positive meeting with myself and the vice-chairmen, it quickly became clear that Neill shares our vision for the future of the club. We're confident he's the right person to lead us into this exciting new chapter.' Hughes said: 'I am delighted to be taking on the opportunity of managing such a great club. 'Everybody I've met is passionate and proud of the Welly and what is developing. Myself and my coaching team can't wait to get started and help play a part in shaping the club's future'. In the final game of the North East Wales League season, Penyffordd Lions beat FC Queen's Park 4-1 in Group B of the Reserves Division. Matt Holmes blasted in a hat-trick in the victory.
