West Nile virus detected in mosquitoes in Northeast Philadelphia, health officials say

Philadelphia health officials are warning residents after West Nile virus was found in mosquitoes in Northeast Philadelphia earlier this month. Officials said the disease was detected in mosquitoes near Pennypack Park during a routine surveillance for the virus. The Department of Health has alerted area doctors and medical offices to look out for patients with symptoms of the virus and for residents to take precautions against the virus. Those precautions include wearing long sleeves, using bug spray with DEET, and making sure you discard any standing water. West Nile virus is a single-stranded RNA virus that causes West Nile fever. It is a member of the family Flaviviridae, from the genus Flavivirus, which also contains the Zika virus, dengue virus, and yellow fever virus. The virus is primarily transmitted by mosquitoes. West Nile virus season in the United States generally runs from summer through fall, with the peak activity typically occurring in now through early September. This is when mosquito populations are at their highest and most active, especially during dusk and dawn. The average number of West Nile virus cases in the U.S. varies annually, but the CDC reports that in 2022, 1,132 cases were reported. The disease is most common during the summer and early fall months. The CDC tracks West Nile virus cases through various surveillance systems, including human, animal, and mosquito surveillance. All suspected and confirmed cases of West Nile virus should be reported to the Philadelphia Department of Public Health at 215-685-6741.

Brinks truck robbed in Philadelphia; police investigate if other thefts from armored trucks are connected

An armored truck carrying cash was robbed Wednesday outside of a store in Northeast Philadelphia, police said. This is at least the third armored car robbery in the city in as many weeks, a review of recent reports from police show. And police said they are investigating whether the incidents may be connected. The most recent incident occurred July 2 at the Holmesburg Shopping Center on the 8400 block of Frankford Avenue near Ashburner Street in Northeast Philadelphia. Chopper 3/CBS News Philadelphia Images from Chopper 3 showed the truck cordoned off with police tape in front of the Dollar General store in the shopping center. Police said a Brinks security officer had just picked up cash from a store and was walking outside when an armed person confronted him and told him not to move. The Brinks guard attempted to reach for his gun when two other people came out of a silver 2022 Honda Accord that was parked behind the armored truck. One of the suspects held a black AR-style rifle and pointed it at the Brinks officer, according to police. "During the confrontation, one suspect took the money bag, while another removed his Brinks-issued handgun from its holster," a police news release reads. The three suspects also ordered the driver to open the truck, but they couldn't get full access due to the security locking system. They then got in the Honda and fled north on Frankford Avenue. Police didn't say how much money was taken. "The investigation remains active and ongoing, including efforts to determine whether this incident is connected to previous similar robberies involving armored transport services," the news release said. Philadelphia SWAT units surround home after suspect shoots man outside Tacony 7-Eleven

SWAT units surrounded a home in the Tacony section of Northeast Philadelphia on Thursday searching for a suspect in connection with a fatal shooting at a nearby 7-Eleven. Before 9 a.m., images from Chopper 3 showed an armored vehicle and multiple SWAT officers in body armor in the area of Keystone Street and Longshore Avenue. Hours earlier around 7:07 a.m., officers responded to the 7-Eleven store on the 6900 block of Torresdale Avenue. A man had been shot in the head there and was pronounced dead on the scene by medics at 7:15 a.m., police said. Chopper 3/CBS News Philadelphia Around 7:44 a.m., officers were called to the 7000 block of Tulip Street, a few blocks away, investigating the presence of a man who may be the shooter wanted in the 7-Eleven shooting. Several police vehicles were at the store Thursday morning and the parking lot was cordoned off with yellow police tape. A witness, Chris Mullins, said the shooting stemmed from a fight inside the store. "The guy opened the door coming out, and they started yelling and screaming. Then they turned around and went back in, and started fighting. One thing led to another... he shot him towards the back of the store," Mullins said. This is a developing story and will be updated.
