KZN man sentenced to life for girlfriend's brutal murder
The Vryheid Regional Court has sentenced a 51-year-old Mondlo man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, bringing justice in a case that sent shock waves through the local community. According to Northern Natal News, Innocent Fanyane Dubazane was found guilty of killing 45-year-old Nonsikelelo Nqobile Xaba, whose body was discovered in a ditch in the C-section area of Mondlo on February 8, 2024. Xaba, who was well known in the community, was found wrapped in a duvet cover and shade netting. She had suffered severe blunt force trauma and was fully clothed but barefoot. Although the couple had been in a romantic relationship, they had kept it hidden from their families. It later emerged that Xaba was last seen alive at Dubazane's home. During police questioning, Dubazane made admissions that linked him to the murder. Investigators discovered the victim's blood-stained shoes hidden in a plastic bag in an outside toilet at Dubazane's home. Drag marks at the back of the house led to the spot where her body was found. Police confirmed that the duvet and netting used to conceal the body came from Dubazane's home and that of his brother, who shared the property. The state, represented by prosecutor Andre Symington, presented compelling evidence from community witnesses, family members and police officers. Witnesses identified the victim's shoes and the duvet as belonging to her and the accused respectively. A relative also testified to having seen the couple together before the murder. Symington highlighted the frequency of gender-based violence in South Africa during sentencing arguments, stressing that Dubazane showed no remorse and that the attack was both brutal and calculated. The court found Dubazane and the deceased had been in a domestic relationship and ruled there were no compelling reasons to deviate from the minimum prescribed sentence for femicide. As a result, Dubazane was sentenced to life imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm. In response to the outcome, NPA regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to fighting gender-based violence and femicide. 'There is no place in our society for perpetrators of such cruelty. We will continue to prioritise these cases and ensure that justice is delivered swiftly and decisively,' she said. The sentence brings closure to a case that deeply affected the Mondlo community and stands as a strong warning to perpetrators of violence against women. 2 killed, 2 arrested in shoot-out after foiled KZN cash-in-transit heist
Two suspected hijackers were shot dead and two others arrested last night in a dramatic police shoot-out following a foiled cash-in-transit robbery in the Sinyameni area in the Msinga policing area in KZN. Northern Natal News reports that at around 18:00 last night, police received a tip-off about an impending heist. A multi-disciplinary intelligence-led operation was swiftly launched, with officers deployed to patrol the identified hotspot. According to SAPS provincial spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker, officers spotted a Mercedes-Benz with four occupants matching the description provided in the intelligence. When they attempted to intercept the vehicle, the suspects opened fire. 'Police responded with tactical precision, returning fire. Two suspects were fatally wounded in the shoot-out, while the remaining two were arrested on the scene,' confirms Naicker. Police recovered two unlicensed firearms and a cache of ammunition at the scene. Preliminary investigations have revealed that one of the arrested suspects is a former employee of a private security company. The two surviving suspects, both in their 40s, have been charged with attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. They are expected to appear in the Msinga Magistrate's Court soon. 'The swift response and bravery of our officers prevented what could have been a major cash-in-transit robbery. Investigations into the broader criminal network are ongoing,' says Naicker. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Nuus wat saakmaak. 4 killed in Dundee house shooting, including woman and teenage girl
Four people, including a woman and a teenage girl, were shot dead at a house in Sibongile, Dundee, last night. Initial reports suggest the victims were attacked at about 20:00, Northern Natal News reports. KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said it was reported that two men, aged 31 and 35, were outside the house when an unknown number of gunmen arrived and opened fire on them, killing them instantly. The gunmen then went inside the house, where there were three people, and demanded money and drugs from a 29-year-old woman. A scuffle ensued between one of the men and the woman during which she was shot multiple times. The men searched and took an undisclosed amount of money. A 14-year-old girl who was in the house was also shot several times and died on the scene. Two others, a man and a woman, who were in the house, reportedly managed to leave the room upon hearing the first gunshots and survived the shooting unscathed. 'The motive of the killings is suspected to be robbery; however, a drug-related feud cannot be ruled out. Police are appealing to anyone who might have information regarding the incident and the suspects' whereabouts to contact the nearest police station or call the crime stop number 08600 10111.' No arrests have been made yet. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Nuus wat saakmaak.
