Eritrea: Training on Financial and Material Management

Training on financial and material management has been provided to newly elected area administrators, village coordinators, tax collectors in Afabet sub-zone, and members of the sub-zonal administration. The training was organized by the Human Resources Development Unit of the Northern Red Sea Regional Administration. The training covered planning and its significance, financial and material management, strengthening worker discipline and productivity, documentation, project management, and conflict resolution in the workplace. Explaining the importance of the training in facilitating their daily responsibilities, the trainees called for the program's continuity. Calling on the participants to apply the knowledge gained from the training in their day-to-day activities, Mr. Mohammed-Nur Rejib, Administrator of the sub-zone, expressed the administration's readiness to strengthen participation and contribute to developing human resource capacity in the sub-zone. Ms. Tekea Tesfamariam, President of the National Union of Eritrean Women, conducted seminars for women in the sub-zones of Nakfa, Adoha, and Afabet in the Northern Red Sea Region. The seminars, which were held from 24 to 27 June, focused on the history of women in general and Eritrean women in particular, highlighting the progress they have achieved, the sacrifices made, and their future prospects. During the seminars, Ms. Tekea elaborated on the discrimination and unequal treatment that Eritrean women have historically faced due to religion, culture, and traditional beliefs. She also outlined the efforts made during the armed struggle for independence to raise awareness on women's issues, as well as the post-independence measures taken by the Eritrean Government to promote gender equality and ensure women's participation in all sectors. Ms. Tekea called on young women to honor the legacy of their mothers by equipping themselves with the necessary education and skills and to strive for complete emancipation. The participants held extensive discussions on the issues raised during the seminars and expressed their commitment to actively contribute to the goals of the Union. The sub-zonal administrators also expressed their readiness to support the realization of the objectives of the National Union of Eritrean Women. Eritrea: Cataract Surgery for Over 700 Citizens

Cataract surgery is being conducted for 700 citizens from across the country at Berhan Aini National Referral Hospital from 23 to 26 June. Nurse Gebrezgiabhier Haile, head of health services at the hospital, stated that cataract surgery has already been performed on 500 patients, with an additional 200 surgeries planned in the coming days. He noted that the program is part of the national plan to conduct cataract surgery for 5,000 patients annually across all regions of the country. Highlighting that cataract surgery was previously carried out in collaboration with foreign experts, Nurse Gebrezgiabhier explained that the current program is being conducted entirely through internal capacity. He also noted that similar surgeries have been recently carried out in the sub-zones of Afabet, Massawa, and Ghinda in the Northern Red Sea Region, as well as in the Assab sub-zone of the Southern Red Sea Region. Nurse Gebrezgiabhier further indicated that similar cataract surgeries are planned for next month in the Gash Barka cities of Golij, Barentu, and Teseney, with additional surgeries to follow in August in Asmara. Monetary Support to Families of Martyrs

The Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare branch in the Ghinda sub-zone reported that 294 thousand Nakfa, contributed by Government workers in the sub-zone, was distributed to 49 families of martyrs, with each family receiving 6 thousand Nakfa. The branch also stated that 180 thousand Nakfa, contributed by Diaspora nationals, was distributed to 22 families, and 50 families were rehabilitated with livestock. In the same vein, members of the Northern Red Sea Region Administration, the Ministry of Marine Resources, the Air Force, and the Massawa Municipality extended financial support to three families of martyrs, each receiving 6 thousand Nakfa. Reports indicate that over the past six months, approximately 3 million Nakfa has been disbursed to families of martyrs in the Ghinda sub-zone. The National Union of Eritrean Women branch in the Northern Red Sea Region organized a meeting on 8 June for women from various institutions, aimed at enhancing women's overall capacity. At the meeting, Ms. Helen Meketa from the central office of the National Union of Eritrean Women gave a briefing, accompanied by historical examples, on the experiences and struggles women have undergone at various stages in world history to secure their rights. Noting that the contribution of Eritrean women in the armed struggle for independence is acknowledged internationally and beyond the continental level, Ms. Helen called on women to take advantage of the educational opportunities provided by the Government and to become competitive and effective in the workplace. Mr. Saleh Nafi'e, head of organizational affairs at the union's Northern Red Sea Region branch, stated that organizing meetings and seminars aimed at empowering young women is one of the main objectives of the union. He emphasized that active participation and the presentation of constructive ideas by women are crucial to fully realizing these objectives.
