English cricket goes into bat with bulk of £520m Hundred windfall
English cricket's governing body will on Wednesday hail a landmark moment for the sport when it announces that three-quarters of the deals to bring in new investors to The Hundred have been completed. Sky News understands that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) plans to issue a statement confirming that it has received proceeds from the sale of stakes in Birmingham Phoenix, London Spirit, Manchester Originals, Northern Superchargers, Southern Brave and Welsh Fire. The two other franchise deals - involving the Oval Invincibles and Nottinghamshire's Trent Rockets - will be completed on October 1, the ECB is expected to say. One insider said a statement was likely to be issued on Wednesday, although they cautioned that the timing could slip. When all eight deals are concluded, they will generate a collective windfall of £520m for the sport's strained coffers. Last week, Sky News revealed that unresolved talks between India's richest family and Surrey County Cricket Club - which hosts the Oval Invincibles Hundred team - were threatening to delay the delivery of a vast windfall for the sport. One of the outstanding issues relates to the name under which the Oval Invincibles will play in future years, with the Ambani family keen to use a derivative of the Mumbai Indians brand that it also owns. This week's announcement will come after months of talks after the ECB and the eight Hundred-playing counties agreed exclusivity periods with their preferred investors. The backers include some of the world's most prominent financiers, billionaires and technology executives. Following protracted talks, the ECB has agreed to revised terms with the investors, with host venues now retaining control of their teams' intellectual property rights. The investors will also hold an effective veto over future expansion of the Hundred, while the ECB will be barred from launching any other short-form professional version of the sport while the Hundred remains operational. Meanwhile, the governing body will retain full ownership of the competition itself as well as controlling the regulation of it and the window within which it can be played each year. The ECB has been waiting for investors in the eight franchises to sign participation agreements since an auction in February which valued the participating teams at just over £975m. Some of the deals involve the investors owning 49% of their respective franchise, while India's Sun TV Network has taken full ownership of Yorkshire's Northern Superchargers. The proceeds of its stake sales will be distributed to all of English cricket's professional counties as well as £50m being delivered to the grassroots game. The windfalls are being seen as a lifeline for many cash-strapped counties which have been struggling under significant debt piles for many years. The most valuable Hundred sale saw a group of technology tycoons, including executives from Google and Microsoft, paying about £145m for a 49% stake in Lords-based London Spirit. This year's kicks off next week with fixtures including a clash between the two London-based franchises. The ECB declined to comment.

James Anderson Bags Hundred Contract At 42, Rocky Flintoff Picked By Father's Team
James Anderson joins Manchester Originals in The Hundred via a wildcard deal, while 17-year-old Rocky Flintoff is picked by Northern Superchargers, coached by his father Andrew. England legend James Anderson has bagged his first contract at The Hundred — the country's 100-ball franchise competition — in a 'wildcard' deal with Manchester Originals. Meanwhile, 17-year-old prodigy Rocky Flintoff has been picked by his father and former captain, Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff's Northern Superchargers. Anderson, a Test specialist for most of his playing career, was nudged to retire from the format last year. He now has the India-England Test series named after him (and Sachin Tendulkar), but the pacer has continued to push the limits of his age to play competitive cricket. After going unlisted in the IPL, he recently played eight matches for Lancashire in the Vitality Blast, picking an impressive 14 wickets as a new-ball specialist. Flintoff, meanwhile, will raise eyebrows getting into a team coached by his father. However, he has made headlines with his performances recently, scoring 107 against India under-19 in a recent Youth ODI and following it up with a 93 (152) in the first innings of the ongoing Youth Test. The two big names, at the opposite ends of their careers, will earn a £31,000 (around INR 35 lakhs) deal each. All eight teams in the men's and women's competitions have picked two players each in the draft. All men's wildcard picks will earn the same amount. In the women's, all 16 players will earn £10,000 (around INR 11.5 lakhs) each. The competition will run from August 5-31, starting with London Spirit's double-header against Oval Invincibles at Lord's. The Hundred 2025 wildcards Manchester Originals: James Anderson, Marchant de Lange London Spirit: Sean Dickson, Ryan Higgins Women's teams Birmingham Phoenix: Mary Taylor, Phoebe Brett London Spirit: Abi Norgrove, Kate Coppack Manchester Originals: Esmae MacGregor, Darcey Carter Northern Superchargers: Katherine Fraser, Sophia Turner Southern Brave: Phoebe Turner, Amara Carr Welsh Fire: Charley Phillips, Alex Griffiths. view comments First Published: July 15, 2025, 16:32 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. The Hundred draft: Andrew Flintoff picks 17-year-old son Rocky as wildcard pick for Northern Superchargers
Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff picked up his 17-year-old son, Rocky, in the Hundred draft on Tuesday to play for the Northern Superchargers, where he is the head coach. At the other end of the draft signing spectrum was a 43-year-old Jimmy Anderson, who will make his first appearance in the competition this summer. Flintoff senior has been the head coach of the Leeds-based Superchargers for two seasons after returning to cricket after his horrific crash while filming Top Gear. Flintoff has since worked as an assistant coach with the England senior men's squad and was recently part of the U-19 England Lions set-up, where he also oversaw the rise of his son, Rocky, over the last year. Yet to play a professional T20 for his county side, Lancashire, also home to Anderson, Rocky was picked up as a wildcard signing. The wildcard draft lets teams consider player performance in the Vitality Blast, a competition Flintoff has never played in Rocky was recently in action during the Lions' home series against India Under-19. He scored a century in the fourth Youth ODI before making a mark in the first Youth Test in Beckenham over the weekend, scoring 93 and 11 in two innings of a drawn game. Meanwhile, Anderson has been picked by his home team, the Manchester Originals. This selection comes after a superb season with Lancashire in the Blast, where he's taken 14 wickets in seven games. This marks his return to white-ball cricket after nearly a decade.
