Stray cat stows away in cargo container from China to Minnesota. ‘Miracle'
A rare 'first' has happened to an animal rescue in Minnesota — one that possibly won't ever be repeated. A stray cat managed to find herself thousands of miles from home … on a completely different continent. Needless to say, staff was in shock. 'After nearly 15 years providing animal control services, it's rare for us to experience a true 'first'… but today was one of those days,' the Companion Animal Care & Control said in a June 5 Facebook post. 'Meet our first-ever stray cat from China—yes, you read that right.' Her name? Stowaway (as named later by the Northwoods Humane Society in Wyoming.) 'This tiny survivor was found inside a shipping container that traveled thousands of miles across the ocean, all the way from China to Oakdale, MN,' Companion continued. 'For three long weeks, she likely survived by drinking condensation and maybe snagging a rodent or two. By the time she was discovered—hiding under a pallet as the crates were being unloaded—she was severely dehydrated and dangerously thin.' The animal rescue service posted photos of the escape artist, then safe in a kennel, looking worn and afraid. They also shared photos of the cargo she was inside. 'Thankfully, our team was called, and with a little patience (and a humane trap), we were able to safely catch her,' the rescue said. 'This cat is nothing short of a miracle.' She was transferred to Northwoods, who provided an update on Stowaway. 'Just wanted to give a quick update on her - yesterday, she was transferred to the care of Pet Haven, Inc. of MN, who will be able to provide her with the care she needs in this next step of her journey to adoption,' the shelter said in a June 11 Facebook post. 'With their Wallflower Program, she'll get the quiet, time and care she needs right now.' To keep up with Stowaway's story, follow Pet Haven's Facebook page. Oakdale is about 20-miles east of Minneapolis.

Disbelief as cat travels across the world in shipping container
Animal control officers in the Midwest rescued a cat from China that was found inside a shipping container in Oakdale, Minnesota, after a three-week journey across the Pacific Ocean. Workers unloading the container discovered the emaciated cat hidden beneath a pallet. Officials believe the cat survived by drinking condensation and possibly eating rodents; it was severely dehydrated and underweight when found. The cat, named Stowaway by the Northwoods Humane Society, is receiving medical care and will be available for adoption once recovered. The animal control team described the rescue as a "miracle" and sought name suggestions on Facebook, with followers proposing names like Plum Blossom, Carmen, and Mira.

Long-distance stray: Cat stows away in shipping container from China to Minnesota for three-week journey
Animal control officers in the Midwest were stunned after responding to a call unlike any they've seen in nearly 15 years on the job: a stray cat China. The Companion Animal Control, which services counties in Minnesota and Wisconsin, revealed last week that the feline survivor was discovered hidden inside a shipping container that had traveled thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean before arriving at a local business in Oakdale. Workers unloading the container were shocked to find the emaciated cat tucked beneath a pallet. The shipping container had been sealed for approximately three weeks. Officials believe the cat survived the harrowing journey by drinking condensation and potentially feeding on rodents inside the container. By the time she was found, she was severely dehydrated and dangerously underweight. 'We've seen a lot over the years, but this was truly a first,' the animal control team said in a Facebook post. 'This cat is nothing short of a miracle.' Using a humane trap and a dose of patience, animal control successfully rescued the frightened animal. She is now in the care of the Northwoods Humane Society, where she is receiving medical attention and being nursed back to health. The staff there named her Stowaway, WCCO reports. Once Stowaway recovers, the globe-trotting feline will be ready for adoption. The animal control office asked its followers for name suggestions in a June 5 Facebook post. '(Plum) Blossom or Mei, it's a flower that symbolizes perseverance in the Chinese culture,' one contributor commented. 'Carmen! short for Carmen SanDiego, because where in the world will this lil lady be next?' another suggested. A third person recommended, 'Mira, short for miracle.'

Stowaway cat survives 3-week trip from China to Minnesota in shipping container
A cat now calling Minnesota home has braved an international journey of survival and resilience. The people at Northwoods Humane Society in Wyoming, Minnesota, have taken to calling her Stowaway. "It's incredible," said Renee Rude, Northwoods' executive director. "It really is shocking that that happened." The cat was discovered in a shipping container in Oakdale that came all the way from China. Companion Animal Care and Control She isn't up for much attention or activity yet as she builds back her strength. "She's really scared," Rude said. "I can only imagine three weeks in a container without food or water. She must've been eating rodents and drinking condensation." Companion Animal Care and Control, an animal rescue serving Minnesota and Wisconsin, says she was "severely dehydrated and dangerously thin." They brought her to Northwoods, where Rude says she's been eating and drinking. "We don't want to stress her out, so we haven't been able to do an actual exam and assess her health, but she looks OK," she said. "We don't see any obvious injuries or illnesses or anything." The cat was on the move again Tuesday, headed to Pet Haven, a rescue in St. Paul where she has a foster home lined up. "They're going to be able to work with her and help her get to a point where she can trust people and feel comfortable around people," Rude said. "Ultimately, the goal is to find a family of her own and be adopted." Rude says the little cat is a testament to the outsize resilience of animals. "I look forward to hearing in a month's time or two months' time about the turnaround she makes," she said. A permanent name for the cat is still being decided.
