Son of Norweigan Crown Princess charged with rape and sexual assault
The eldest son of Norway's Crown Princess has been charged with rape, sexual assault and bodily harm, Norweigan police have said. The charges follow a months-long investigation of a case involving a 'double digit' number of alleged victims. Marius Borg Høiby, 28, is the stepson of the heir to the Norwegian throne, Crown Prince Haakon, and is the son of Mette-Marit from a previous relationship. He has no royal title or official duties. Høiby was arrested three times in 2024 in connection with the case. Police say that they have conducted a 'thorough investigation' of the cases, including a witness interviews, police searches and extensive digital material, including text-messages. Oslo Police Attorney Andreas Kruszewski said Høiby was cooperative during police questioning, which is now complete. The charges included one case of rape involving intercourse and two cases of rape without intercourse, four cases of sexual assault and two cases of bodily harm, Kruszewksi said at a news conference. Altogether Høiby faces 23 charges, which also include violating a restraining order and road traffic offences. 'I cannot go into further detail about the number of victims in the case beyond confirming that it is a double-digit number,' he said. Høiby's defence attorney Petar Sekulic has said the defendant is ''absolutely taking the accusations very seriously, but doesn't acknowledge any wrongdoing in most of the cases — especially the cases regarding sexual abuse and violence.' The royal palace did not immediately respond to an e-mailed request from the Associated Press seeking comment. Høiby previously lived with the royal couple and their two children, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, but now lives nearby, according to Sekulic. Norway's future queen made headlines in 2001 when she married Haakon because she was a single mother who had once been a companion of Høiby's father, a felon convicted of drugs charges. Ivana Bacik holds up meme of bald baby JD Vance in the Dáil
A MEME OF US Vice President JD Vance depicted as a baby was held up in the Dáil today by Labour leader Ivana Bacik. Bacik used the prop to illustrate her frustration at the United States' recent clampdown on international visas, including the popular J1 visa used by Irish students. Earlier this week, the US announced that future applicants looking to visit the country will be required to divulge 'all social media usernames or handles of every platform they have used from the last five years' on their visa application form. They are also required to set their social media profiles to public. Bacik told the Dáil today that this is a 'major incursion on the freedom of expression'. 'Each year, thousands of young Irish people work in the US on J1 visas. I've done it myself, I had a very happy summer in Boston many years ago. And generally it's a very positive experience. 'But things have changed drastically under US President Trump with the recent authoritarian announcement that students would have to hand over social media accounts. 'We're watching a major incursion on the freedom of expression, unthinkable in an electoral democracy. 'This week, a young Norwegian tourist detained by ICE at the airport was sent back to Oslo. Why? He had this meme on his phone minister,' Bacik said as she held up a sheet of paper. Bacik described the meme as amusing. 'A meme depicting Vice President JD Vance as a baby. I mean, extraordinary. Extraordinary that a young person with this amusing meme on their phone, depicting a public person, that this would be used as an excuse to detain him for five hours and then deport him back to Oslo.' Advertisement Bacik said she welcomed Tánaiste Simon Harris's promise this week to raise the J1 visa issue with the US Ambassador to Ireland , but asked what Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan (who has responsibility for issuing visas in Ireland) will do to reassure young people travelling to the United States. In response, O'Callaghan said there is 'very little' he can do about the US immigration system. 'Like I'm trying to put rules on the Irish immigration system, I can't control the US immigration system,' he said. O'Callaghan looked somewhat dejected while he listened to the Labour leader. O'Callaghan added that he thinks the new rules imposed by the US are 'regrettable' and he welcomed the criticism of the decision by both the Taoiseach and Tánaiste. Norweigan tourist The Norwegian tourist Bacik referred to claimed he was denied entry to the US because of the meme of Vance on his phone. The story was first reported by Norwegian newspaper Nordlys on Monday, and then picked up by the Daily Mail on Tuesday. The tourist, Mads Mikkelsen, claimed he was threatened with a $5,000 fine or five years in prison if he refused to provide the password to his mobile device, which he did. Mikkelsen claimed he was sent home to Norway after authorities discovered the Vance meme on his phone. However, the US Customs and Border Protection has since stated that the tourist was denied entry because of his 'admitted drug use'. In a post on X, the organisation said it was not for any memes or political reasons. Fact Check: FALSE Mads Mikkelsen was not denied entry for any memes or political reasons, it was for his admitted drug use. — CBP (@CBP) June 24, 2025 Readers like you are keeping these stories free for everyone... Orla Comerford posts personal best to win para 100m at Bislett Games in Oslo
Orla Comerford clocked a lifetime best of 11.87 to win the para women's 100m at the Bislett Games in Oslo on Wednesday. The victory in the Norweigan capital continues the Dubliner's positive start to the season, following her win at the FBK Games in the Netherlands on Monday, which saw her post 11.96 for the 100m. That time was eclipsed by the Paralympic bronze medallist in Oslo when running into a slight headwind of 0.7m/s. The Bislett Games is one of the meets that incorporates para athletics, with Comerford no doubt keen to compete in more ahead of September's World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi. Thursday will see Rhasidat Adeleke and Mark English in action at the Oslo Diamond League. On Monday last, English became the first Irishman to break 1:44 in the 800m, lowering his own Irish record for the second time in 11 days with his run of 1:43.92 at the FBK Games.

Eurovision winner Linda Martin gives EMMY advice: 'Embrace it'
Eurovision legend Linda Martin gave advice to EMMY, this year's hopeful for Ireland, telling the 24-year-old Norweigan singer to "embrace it" because it's "going to go past in a flash". Martin, who won the Song Contest in 1992 with Why Me?, welcomed EMMY and her brother Erlend to her dog shelter in Dublin where she presented the singer with a bouquet of green, white and orange flowers to wish her luck on her Eurovision journey. Speaking to EMMY, Martin said: "Enjoy it because it's going to go past in a flash. And speak to everybody, speak to the newspapers and magazines, the radios, anything. "Speak to them just so they know who you are and what your song is about and get your song out there because it's vitally important, but do enjoy yourself." The Belfast-born singer continued: "I know on the stage you're going to be nervous. Because you'll be aware that there's 400 million people watching, but this is the most wonderful platform you could ever imagine. "Where would you ever be seen again by so many people? So there's going to be managers looking in, there's going to be promoters, there's gonna be record labels looking at everything and just use it and go forward. "Embrace it. Because I love Eurovision. I got stuck into it straight away and EMMY, I'm still working because of that Eurovision contest. You're so beautiful and friendly. Both of you. We'll be cheering for you on the night." When EMMY expressed her gratitude at being invited to the dog shelter, Dublin Dog Hub, which has rehomed 225 dogs since it opened in February 2024, Martin replied: "It was a pleasure... and we just wish you the very, very best of luck. "If you win... you have to come back and live in Dublin. And then I'll have a job here for you. It's been an absolute pleasure and go and win for Ireland!" "We'll do our best!," EMMY responded. EMMY will perform her track Laika Party at the second Eurovision Song Contest semi-final on Thursday 15 May at 8pm on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player.
