Flag fairy bringing Canadian pride to Winnipeg

For over 25 years, one woman has been placing Canada flags up and down her neighbourhood street. A Winnipeg woman has been dubbed the 'flag fairy' for bringing a patriotic flair to her Norwood Flats street every Canada Day. For more than 25 years, Shelley Kent has been getting up early and placing Canada flags up and down Birchdale Avenue. The initiative began when Kent invited some neighbours over for a Canada Day party and placed flags at the invitees' homes. Since then, she has expanded the venture to include almost everyone on her street, planting about 100 flags each year. 'I kind of felt bad for the other neighbours, so we got more flags,' she said. 'Then just every year it became a tradition that at six o'clock in the morning, I take my dog that I have at the time and walk it and put the flags out at everybody's front porch or at the end of their sidewalks.' Though Kent wasn't trying to keep it a secret, there was a time when many people didn't know who was planting the flags. Now that her secret is out in the open, she said she does it to show her appreciation for the country. 'It's just the fact that it's a great place to live in Canada.' Kent said she plans on continuing her role as the flag fairy for years to come.
