End of an era as popular Dublin restaurant prepares to close
Another of the nations best known dining destinations, Dublin City's Cleaver East, is shutting its doors, after over a decade serving up some of the finest food on a platter. The Temple bar restaurant first opened its doors in 2013 and over the past twelve years, head chef Oliver Dunne has cooked up the finest Nosh to the great and the good. But in a statement, Mr Dunne lamented that he has called time on Clever East's chapters as one of Ireland 's finest food venues. Pic: Cleaver East 'After 12 happy and memorable years in Temple Bar, Cleaver East will be closing its doors for the final time on Sunday, 3rd August 2025, due to the closure and renovation of The Clarence Hotel,' said a statement issued this afternoon. 'We want to express our massive thanks to each and every one of our customers for your continued custom, loyalty, and support over the years. We've loved every single minute of it. Cleaver East has been a trail-blazing restaurant. It was first to bring and launch many dining trends and concepts to Ireland, such as, the first small plate restaurant, bottomless brunches, night bird menus, not afternoon tea, night brunch, Pornburger series, ladies' nights and so many more. None of this would have been possible without you guys, our amazing team and our Cleaver East community. Pic: Cleaver East We want to thank you all for your hard work, passion and dedication. You've been the heart and soul of Cleaver East, creating countless memories for our guests and shaping the atmosphere that made this place so special. We are extremely happy and very grateful to be able to retain all of you, our amazing staff with not a single person left behind. All our Cleaver family have been relocated within the existing Oliver Dunne Restaurant Group and we are so, so lucky to continue this journey with you.' Cleaver East was famed for it's 'bottomless brunch ' which has entered the annals of foodie lore in the capital. 'Over the past 12 years, Cleaver East has become known for its creative food, positive energetic service style, vibrant atmosphere – with a special note to our now iconic Bottomless Brunch, a Dublin institution in its own right! And it's not over, our beloved Bottomless Brunch will live on at our sister venue, Beef & Lobster Temple Bar, ensuring the spirit of Cleaver East continues to thrive and the cocktails keep flowing.' Pic: Cleaver East But before the restaurant closes Over Dunne and his team are hosting one last hurrah before the ovens are turned off for the final time. 'We invite everyone to join us in celebrating the final few weeks of Cleaver East. Come raise a glass and enjoy this legendary restaurant one last time before we say goodbye. Cleaver East will be open for Dinner, Wednesday to Sunday and weekend Bottomless Brunch, up to and including Sunday, 3rd of August, when we turn off the lights one last time. Thank you, Dublin, it's been a wild ride.' Cleaver East is just the latest in a string of popular city centre restaurants forced to shut down, many citing the prohibitive costs of doing business in the capital.

Kia EV6 GT is a ridiculously fast SUV that even boils your kettle – but can it beat a £158k Porsche 911 in a drag race?
YOU join us at Santa Pod drag strip for a little 'run what ya brung' showdown. That's Sully in his box-fresh Golf R. 5 5 5 Nosh with his dreamy 911 GT3 Touring. Nice cars. Very nice cars. Except I'm going to smoke them in a Kia. Then make a cup of tea with it afterwards. Don't get me wrong, the Golf R is a lovely bit of kit. Nailed-on future classic. Sully's got 333 horses to play with and sticky four-wheel drive to go round significant corners at considerable speeds. But we're doing a quarter-mile drag race here, buddy. Eat my rubber. What can I say about Nosh's Porker? Dang. Inside Kia's refreshed Sportage including comfy cabin, punchy new looks and driving mode young families will love The noise — 510 horses, manual gearbox, red lines at 9,000rpm. No rear wing. Absolute weapon. Just stay away from those concrete barriers, eh, Noshy lad. They look hungry. Right, let's hit you with some times. The Golf R's quickest run was 12.5 seconds, reaching 110mph. The 911 edged it with 12.2 seconds and 119mph. Then it was my turn in Kia's EV6 GT. When electric cars accelerate — even the cheaper ones — they leave your head buried in the back of the headrest. This one, with 641 horses and 770Nm of torques, scrambles your eggs. Needless to say, we blitzed the £158k Porker by more than a second, flashing up 11.165 seconds and 124mph on the iconic Santa Pod gantry. Wallop. 5 With more road in front of us, like an unrestricted autobahn, we could have kept on pushing to a very un-Kia-like 161mph. New virtual gearshift technology adds simulated gear changes and fake engine sounds if you want them. Otherwise just pin it to win it. My new friend Nosh, an architect from Manchester, was clearly impressed. He said: 'It's amazing isn't it, ridiculously fast. "Eventually, when we have to, I'll probably get one. 'But I'm going to enjoy a manual gearshift and loud engines for as long as I can.' Fair play. He's owned some tasty motors over the years including a Ferrari 430 Scuderia and Porsche 930 Turbo 'Widowmaker'. Right, back on topic. Not only is the newly-updated EV6 GT faster than before, it goes further, recharges more quickerly — like 18 minutes — and the cabin's been given some love too. OUT goes the glossy piano black, replaced by less smudgy brushed plastic. IN comes lots of cool neon-green detailing. The twin-screen dash carries all the latest tech. You can use the car's power supply to boil a kettle or inflate an air bed on festival weekends. Last observation. Price. EV6 GT is actually £2,690 cheaper than before at £59,985. For a better car. Kia is going to take some catching at this rate. 5

Sweet goodbye: Iconic SA chocolate faces an uncertain future
Beacon chocolates face an uncertain future as Tiger Brands considers selling the brand. Image: YouTube For those of us who buy reasonably priced chocolates on a whim — a slab at the till, or a 3-for-2 when the kids are eyeing something sweet — Beacon chocolates have long been a household favourite. From the creamy Ebony and Ivory, or my personal favourite - Heavenly Melk Tert - to the nostalgic appeal of a Nosh bar or the classic crunchy TV Bar, these local treats have offered a slice of South African comfort for generations. But now, change is on the horizon, as one of the country's best-known chocolate brands may be disappearing from shelves. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Tiger Brands, one of South Africa's leading food producers, has announced plans to sell its Beacon chocolate range. The beloved brand, established nearly a century ago, includes favourites such as the TV Bar, Nosh, chocolate-and-marshmallow Easter eggs, and a range of chocolate slabs — including popular flavours like Ebony and Ivory. The company confirmed that while no final decision has been made yet, it is actively exploring options to sell the chocolate category. "We will continue delivering on the strategic turnaround of the business until such time as an appropriate exit mechanism has been identified," CFO Thushen Govender told News24. Tiger Brands CEO Tjaart Kruger acknowledged the challenges facing the chocolate division in an interview with News24. He admitted that the group had "probably fallen behind in technology," explaining that they had not upgraded their chocolate-making equipment in 30 years. According to him, the investment required to modernise the facility is now too high to justify. However, he believes the Beacon brand still holds potential and In the hands of the right person, the Beacon chocolate brand can be a good business. Kruger also noted the difficulty in competing with more dominant chocolate brands, saying, "We price against Cadbury like R4 or R5 a slab cheaper and still don't get the volumes." Despite the uncertain future of Beacon chocolates, Tiger Brands has reassured consumers that other favourites in its sweets portfolio — including Jelly Tots, Maynards Wine Gums, Fizzer, Marshmallows, and Liquorice All Sorts as well as the Jungle Oats Bar is also unaffected by the changes. While no timelines have been confirmed, Tiger Brands has indicated it will continue producing Beacon chocolates until a suitable buyer or alternative strategy is in place. For loyal fans of the brand, it's an unsettling moment — one that may soon turn our spontaneous chocolate purchases into treasured memories. IOL Lifestyle
